BREEDING McCairnie Cairns breeding program is ethical and sustainable.

Where possible we recycle - or launder rather using disposable puppy pads for example. We make dog beds or blankets from old clothing / bedding.

The breeding is all natural with our dogs.
No forced matings, no artificial insemination and no inbreeding in line with recommendations from the Kennel Club.

Ethical practice means the welfare of the dogs and puppies are central to everything we do. Whether it be nutrition, medications, veterinary care - they want for nothing!

We principally breed our pups to go to pet homes only where they will be loved and return that hundreds and thousands of times to the families they go to.

Please note this message about floppy puppies!!

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Puppy update!

Hi! I’m just over 2 weeks old. Excuse me for the way I’m sleeping but I drank too much milk and this is the only comfy position right now!! I’m resting next to my sister and guess what I’m dreaming about as I wiggle my little legs and squeak? ….. I will be starting to toddle and play with my brothers and sisters soon! Do you think my tummy is shiny? 😂 Anyway - I’m sending love 💕 to everyone and all their Cairns, who sees this picture. Life isn’t easy but having Cairny cuddles always helps. 💕 💕. Happy October everyone 🐾.

Rose is doing exceptionally well. She is raising all pups on her own. They are gaining weight rapidly, eyes are open, but still lots of sleeping and twitching ofcourse!

Making friends with Basil the cat!

The pups ear canals are starting to open up as there is evidence they can hear noises! They are wobbly and not very coordinated, but they are getting up on their paws and walking (stumbling?) around a little. They are still sleeping most of the time, making it difficult to get an interesting video. In the next few days I’m expecting puppy teeth. These will of course be replaced by adult teeth and they can experience painful teething. STORM BABET is on its way and these puppies are very cosy in the corner of my kitchen. The heat lamp is still on. I have changed the cage to a pen now in preparation for them becoming more mobile. I can extend this as they get older.
