Dogs off lead

We all complain because it is an issue, we as dog owners need to be more aware, mindful, considerate of other people and their dogs.

Firstly there is no blanket law for dogs to be on a lead. There are orders to say that dogs need to be on a lead in certain areas, such as beaches, parks well public areas.

The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2011 for NI has given powers to councils to force dog owners to keep their dogs on lead, ban dogs from designated areas, and to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice, to anyone braking council rules.

Letting your dog off lead when out walking-

Everyone wants their dog to be off lead to have a run around, sniff, explore etc freely. Which is fine
as long as you are totally sure that your dog does the following-

Responds to your verbal cues, your dog should come to you when called.

With lots of distractions such as crowded places, your dog needs to obey you no matter what!

Using a retractable lead is a really good way to give your dog more freedom, whilst still under control. This way you are sure you have control and your dog is safe.

What to do if your dog is off lead, runs off and doesn’t listen to you-

1 Don’t panic – stay calm

2 Do not chase – chasing will make your dog run faster as they may think it’s a game.

3 Get their attention calling their name to start, use a whistle, bring a toy, make a funny noise.

4 Do Not Scold – This will scare your dog, and could damage your relationship with them, and make them lose trust in you. So praise when they come back or when they look at you.

Recall training is key for your dog listening to you, and coming back to you to.

Making training for this needs to be fun so make it a game with a few treats to start, then fade them away. Lots of praise is also very important all of this makes coming back more attractive.

Cats and Dogs
Lets start with Cats
First of all what NOT to eat - Chocolate it contains caffeine and theobromine this = dangerous toxins to cats.
Because they are stimulants when absorbed in a cats body it becomes highly toxic.
Milk - Cats are lactose intolerant - Cats do not have the lactase enzyme in their intestines to digest sugar so even it your cat "enjoys" milk, it will make them ill with vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain.
Cats drink milk is a MYTH!
You can get cat milk especially made for them, and made by Whiskas.

Onions, Grapes, Garlic, Nuts, Eggs, Dairy.
NOW DOGS
Same as cats with the list above
Dogs can have milk but do this if you must very occasionally and a very small amount. Or face the consequences of diarrhoea, vomiting, loose stools!
NOW to Fireworks!
DO NOT EXPOSE your pet to fireworks this is irresponsible and just down right stupid!
Loud Bangs, Flash of Light, Smell of Explosive
Both cats and dogs have smell and hearing much more superior to us humans!
DOGS
A dog can hear sounds 4 times further away than we can, hear at a higher frequency, can easily differentiate sound eg recognise the sound of a car and pinpoint the exact location of the sound. Also they can hear 80 feet to 1 mile away.
Smell - a dog has 300 million smell receptors up its nose, compared to 6 million in humans.
CATS
Cats can hear sounds about 3 times higher than humans, hearing up to 64,000 Hz.
Cats have a more sensitive hearing to dogs.
Cats can smell up to 4 miles away, and have 200 million smell receptors in the nose!
With all this information about dogs and cats sense of smell and hearing. Please keep them safe and happy during Halloween, and any other time the fireworks come out!

OK! We have all been hearing and reading in the news and on social media even seen the video, that an XL Bully Breed dog was running out of control and more seriously attacked an 11 year old girl and two adults. This is a serious matter.

The breed first of all - known as a modern breed as they were developed in the 90's. This breed was developed to be a companion dog, and is recognised as a breed by the American Bully Kennel Club.
Their temperament is highly adaptable and trainable. This dog is a mixture of a number of mastiff and bull breed dogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog and English Bulldog are some examples. They can weigh 20-60kg and height 33-50cm.

Breeders of these dogs are in it to make money they can be sold for £2,500 for puppies.

People who have these breeds who spend time training and teaching their dogs all the usual skills such as obedience, self control, recall etc. If a responsible dog owner of these types of dogs do this then they will always have a good control over their dog.

As with all breeds of dogs all the above is important as ANY dog can attack anyone in a highly excitable, stressful, or overstimulated situation which is what this most recent dog in Birmingham was in.

Unfortunately there are people out there who have these dogs for all the wrong reasons and they want their dogs to be aggressive and tough. This is cruel and completely wrong in my opinion.

People need educated if they have any pet especially one who needs a lot of training and understanding.

So here are some tips on what to do if a dog (any dog) is running at you to possibly attack-

1 DO NOT AND I MEAN DO NOT RUN
2 Cover your face, chest and throat, wrap your body up and lie down with your vital areas protected.
The dog will be more likely to stop attacking you if they get the impression you are no longer a threat.

3 DO NOT SCREAM or roll away - this will encourage the dog to keep attacking and they will think you are a prey animal.

4 Once the dog stops move slowly away and calmly asap.

If you have your dog with you -

If you have a jacket or hoodie or towel with you then throw it over the dogs head this should disengage it from attacking and should stop.
DO NOT HIT the dog this will only make the dog worse as it will have a sky high level if adrenaline and energy coursing through its body.

These tips could save you and your dog so remember!

And just one more thing which is very important these dog attacks are NOT the dogs fault it is the owners fault (the people! )

This is Adrianne from Cody’s Barkey Bakes. Quick intro into what I’m all about! I do pet Sitting Dog Behaviour and Training. So the pet sitting this is when you are out for example at work I can look after your pet at your home. Unfortunately I’m unable to board. Hi Everyone Halloween is nearly here!

So some tips to keep your pets safe from fireworks

Avoid letting your dogs and cats outdoors at times when fireworks are likely to be going off.

Create a 'safe place' inside your home for your dog and cat to hide from fireworks - eg a table with a blanket draped over it makes a great hiding den!

The sudden bang of fireworks can be masked by keeping a radio or TV on, which can reduce the impact noises may have on your pet.

Draw curtains over, cover windows to minimise the lights from the fireworks.

Don't confine your dog or cat to one room as they may hurt themselves trying to get out, particularly if they become stressed.

Make sure that your dogs are microchipped and that their microchip details are up to date. If your dog runs out of the house or garden they can reunited with their owner more easily.

If your dog can see that fireworks have no effect on you, this may help decrease their anxiety. Animals are highly perceptive and so if you change your behaviour and be overly affectionate then this could cause your dog to worry more.

Make sure your garden and home are as escape proof as possible.

Provide dogs with a long lasting chew to help keep them distracted, chewing can have a calming effect on dogs.

If your dog is still extremely stressed by fireworks after following this advice, you may want to consult your vet.

Tips on how to keep your dog warm in winter!

Dog Clothing
Dog jackets to cover their backs and tummies.

Keep dog paws dry
Think of how walking on ice would feel barefoot? Snow shoes are very useful in a practical and durable way. Your dog will obviously need to get used to them so give them practice it will pay off!

Accept your dogs limitations
Depending on breed some dogs can stay out longer than others. But like us they need to be in the dry and warm to!

Warm Cozy Places
Keep a nice warm spot for your dog indoors preferably a nice cozy warm blanket and a heater!

Bedding for dogs
Build up the layers nice warm blankets over the dog bed will do the trick!
