Washing capsules and pets👚

We commonly receive enquiries about pets that have ingested washing capsules - in 2022 we took over 170 calls regarding them.

Washing capsules contain detergents which are irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and can cause salivation, foaming at the mouth and vomiting, as well as abdominal discomfort and ulceration within the mouth. Another risk concern with detergents is aspiration pneumonia, which can develop secondary to ingestion. This is when fluid is inhaled into the lungs (commonly vomit) and can cause coughing, choking and breathing difficulties.

⚠️If your pet has ingested a washing capsule and is vomiting/foaming at the mouth, we recommend that you see your vet as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call us on 0207 3055 055 for treatment advice if necessary⚠️

UPDATE:
PANDA HAS FOUND HER FOREVER HOME 🎉Thank you for all yout interest and kind responses.

URGENT REHOME: due to the tragic sudden death of PANDA's owner today, she is looking for a new home ASAP, but this is not going to be an easy match for complex reasons. We are awaiting more details but the initial factors are:

She has lost her owner and her mother who she has been with all her life (approx 4 years) so she is understandably distressed at the sudden separation.

She is lame and needs 6 weeks cage rest. She was examined by her vet on Saturday and was diagnosed as having a ruptured cruciate. Unfortunately she does not realise why she needs to be confined to the cage (except for the opportunity to toilet) and she is vocal about being in the cage, so lots of yapping.

She did her cruciate as she is overweight and under exercised (due to her late owner's ill-health).

She is not used to cats and so can't be in a home with cats.
We don't know what she is like with other dogs, and in this current distressed state has shown that she does not welcome their approach, so it is best for her to be in a home without other dogs so that she can have all the attention and care without having to adapt to new canine relationships too.

There is no obvious solution within the network of support which is why this appeal is going out. She is currently in Suffolk with friends of her owner, who cannot have her as they have a full household of different animals and sadly she does not fit in. It is very difficult for everyone when this happens as the perfect solution would be for her to stay with people who know her, especially when she is a link to a dear friend...but often it is not possible and so it is a hard decision to find a new home, which is why we have been contacted.

Please message, email [email protected] or phone 01284 335351 in office hours if you are able to offer a solution. Please bear with us as we are a small office team and so our response may be limited.

THE GIFT OF THE GROWL
Why growling should never be punished and also never be ignored
Not all growls are negative. Some growls are play growls, attention seeking growls, pleasure seeking growls or frustration growls. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to the particular dog. This post is not about different types of growls, but about warning or aggressive growls.
When a dog growls, maybe even at us, the natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry. Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, growling is unacceptable, growling is a problem and needs to be punished so a dog learns it’s wrong, disrespectful and not to do it again, right?
NO, this couldn’t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with a very valuable communication signal. In their way, they have just communicated to us how they feel without resorting to a bite. Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily have not even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.
Growling is a dog's way of saying "please stop," "stay away from me," "go away," “I’m not comfortable with this and I’m feeling threatened”. A dog that growls is trying hard to communicate and punishment suppresses this ability to communicate. Punishment doesn’t change the level of the dog's discomfort; it creates more stress and the dog will feel more threatened.
Growling is not the problem. Growling is the result of and the symptom of a problem. A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesn’t bite.
Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Recognize and take note of what makes your dog feel threatened and create distance between your dog and whatever is triggering them.
Be grateful for the gift of a growl - it provides us with an opportunity to address the cause & prevent the bite.

🔥It’s getting hot out there, please take care 🔥

With the temperatures looking to rise excessively over the next few days please be sensible and take steps to prevent heatstroke.

With the temperatures predicted any pet is at risk, but brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs and frenchies, alongside the elderly or those pets with heart or lung conditions are all considered extremely high risk.

If you have to bring your pets in please pre cool cars before putting them in to travel. Please do not walk down to the surgery with your pets. If your car does not have air con please consider delaying non urgent appointments. Please call/PetsApp or email us to rearrange if needed, do not just no show!

Our practice is fully air conditioned and we will have plenty of water available in the waiting areas and consult rooms.

At home please take measures to protect all pets. Move enclosures to shaded areas and try and ensure good airflow. Use cool mats. Provide plenty of water. Offer frozen treats. Ice cubes in water bowls. Fans. Brain games over walks to burn off excess energy.

Dogs do not need walks in such insane temperatures. It’s not worth the risk.

If you think your dog could be suffering from heatstroke then please call us asap. Cool their extremities by pouring cool/tepid water over their feet/ears. Put them in an air conditioned car. Offer water if not collapsed. DO NOT wrap in wet towels. For anyone that’s seen that circulating lemon post DONT do that, we do not need to be treating an aspiration pneumonia alongside heatstroke.

Heatstroke can and does kill. But in many cases it can be treated, so if you suspect heatstroke DO NOT delay in seeking veterinary attention.

Please be sensible. Don’t be that numpty that thinks a 5 mile run with your dog in the middle of the day is a good idea… I can assure you, it’s not.

FOSTER needed: Are you an experienced German Shepherd dog owner with the space to take in LEGO, this beautiful 6yo neutered bitch, for a long term foster until October? She was in our foster care but unfortunately she was managing to escape so she is now back with the family looking for another foster home. Her owner is undergoing chemotherapy and family members that have taken her in are finding it is not sustainable with their jobs. She is in West Suffolk and we feel that she must be with someone who knows the breed.

She is a lovely nature with people but likes to escape if the boundary is not dog proof, if the door is open and she does not have recall. But she is great company! It may be that she becomes available for adoption in the autumn but the decision is not one that the owner is happy to make yet so this is a foster need with the intention that they will be reunited.

She has never been with cats and so a cat free home is ideal. We are looking for a dog free household. We have a detailed DogCV that we can share with you, so if you might be able to help us find a solution, please email [email protected] or message us, or call 01284 335351. Thank you.
As you can see it is another challenge which we are hoping we can solve ????

Heatstroke

Please be careful. Your dog is not suffer from not being excercised for one day.

A few years ago a dog I was caring for had heatstroke. He wasn’t excercising, he was simply laying on the sofa. It was hot like today. I noticed he was panting heavily and then he bugun drooling. Immediately I popped a large wet towel over him and dripped room temperature water into his open mouth. I Was scared but because I knew what to do it didn’t disable me. I continued to add cool (not ice cool) water to the towel. His eyes rolled back in his head and he slumped. It was once of the most horrid situations I’ve been in. The towel was crazy hot so I knew it was doing it’s job and drawing the heat from his body.

Thankfully he begun to improve and after about 30 minutes he was back breathing normally.

Please, please have a plan in place. Know what you will do if it happens. Remember your dog can get heatstroke even when they are resting.

RAPESEED
At this time of year, there are posts circulating social media regarding rapeseed, which are shared extensively and understandably worry many dog owners. The posts state that rapeseed is extremely poisonous for dogs, and can cause signs including haemolytic anaemia, blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders and breathing problems.
These posts are misinformation. The signs mentioned are only seen in grazing animals, and most dogs remain asymptomatic after exposure to rapeseed. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset if they have ingested some of the plant, and there have been reports of skin reactions which resemble burns, but this is extremely rare and does not happen to every dog which comes into contact with it.
We have contacted some of the organisation's posting this content, so they will hopefully be amended soon.

There is some excellent information here. It’s worth a read a some consideration.

**𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲**

Every Thursday we will try and bring you a bite size training tip .

Do you have a dog who counter surfs? 🏄‍♂️

Read on for some easy steps to take to manage this behaviour .

Keep surfaces clear of food or the dog out of the kitchen to prevent the dog from learning to counter surf. Don't forget that any behaviour that is rewarded will likely be repeated.

For the dog that has already learned to counter surf, teach a different behaviour.

Take a chopping board, a knife, a tin of hot dog sausages and a tuppaware container. Open the tin and tip the brine down the sink and rinse the sausages. Take out a sausage spend some time carefully cutting it into small pieces.

What is your dog doing at this point? If he has feet on the worktop then just turn sideways and block his view of the chopping board. If he has all four feet on the floor toss him a bit of sausage. If he is barking, whinging, whining then ignore and continue to chop up sausage. If he stops, chuck him a bit of sausage.

Give him maybe half a dozen rewards for four feet of the floor and quiet. (note: You are not asking him to do anything and neither are you asking him to stop doing anything. All you need say to him is a quiet “good boy” when you reward him.)

Now hold off on the next reward and see if he offers anything even better. It could be to move away from the worktop, he might offer a sit or a down if either of those has a history of reward. Basically reward the behaviour that you like. The more repetitions you do the more he is learning what pays off and so when you are preparing food those are the behaviours that he will offer. You will need to reinforce them still occasionally once learned.

Once home and rubbed down Charlie takes the prime position. I’ve popped some vet bed and a blanket on the chair as he’s not dry. I leave the room for a moment and when I return it’s clear he didn’t like the blankets! Cheeky monkey 🙊
