5 Signs Your Dog Is Jealous And How To Deal With It….
A recent study suggests canines do indeed feel envy, but it might be based on other more instinctual emotions, like resource guarding. Whether it’s the exact same emotion humans feel or not, when you get down to it, dogs really do get jealous.
They become attached to people and even objects, and it’s a natural response for them to covet what they deem theirs. It’s nice to know your dog loves you enough to get jealous, but a jealous dog isn’t always a dog you want to be around. Luckily, there are ways to help.
Signs a Dog Is Jealous
1. Pushy Behavior
Do you ever move toward a family member or friend only to have your dog push you away or squeeze in the middle? Or maybe your dog forces their way onto your lap when you’re sitting on the couch with someone other than them. This kind of pushy behavior is a clear sign your dog is jealous. They’re demanding your attention and can’t handle the idea of someone else benefiting from all the wonderful things they love about you.
2. Aggression
Aggression is what happens when that pushy behavior takes a turn for the worst. Everything including growling, snapping, lunging, and attacking is considered an act of aggression. This can happen when you’re sitting comfortably with your dog and they growl at anyone who dares come near. This kind of jealousy can be directed toward both people and other pets.
3. Doing a Trick
Your dog has learned through your many training sessions that you love it when they do tricks. You give them treats and praise when they roll over, spin, and play dead. If they’re desperate for your attention, pulling off a trick seems like a good way to get what they want. If you’re talking on the phone, don’t be surprised if your jealous pup starts randomly pulling tricks in hopes you’ll look their way.
4. Misbehaving
While doing tricks earns them praise, jealous dogs don’t always care what kind of reaction they get, as long as they get one. In their mind, misbehaving is the same as doing something good because they get your attention either way.
5. Leaving the Room
Jealousy is often a form of insecurity. If a dog feels they’re being neglected and they’re jealous of someone else taking their spot, they might not have the heart to fight it. Sometimes they express their emotions by leaving the room. They’re trying to communicate that something is bothering them, and withdrawing can be a sign of envy.
How to Help
You’re pretty sure your dog is jealous, but what can you do about it? It’s not like a jealous spouse where you can calmly talk it out. Instead of telling your pup there’s no reason for them to be jealous, you need to show them. Here are a few practical ways you can help improve your dog’s jealous behaviours.
Remove the Reward
There’s nothing a jealous dog loves more than attention. As long as you’re looking at them or touching them, they feel their actions were worthwhile. You need to show your dog that inappropriate behaviours won’t get them what they want.
If they’re sitting on your lap and growl when someone walks into the room, calmly remove them from your lap and take away their reward. It’s important to be consistent with this method of training. The only way they’ll decipher your message is if you do it every single time.
Get Everyone Involved in Training
Jealousy in dogs usually happens when they form a particularly strong bond with a specific person in their household. It’s usually the person who spends the most time with them, and everyone else in the dog’s world pales in comparison. It’s okay to take a moment to bask in their affection, but the only way to have a peaceful household is for the dog to realize all of their humans are important, not just their favorite.
To show them this, other people in the family need to be more involved with training. Even dogs that already aced obedience school need regular training sessions.
Make sure everyone trains in the same way so the dog doesn’t get confused. Spending time with other people will show the dog every human in their life deserves respect and a place on the couch.
Change Their Perspective
A jealous dog sees other people and pets as competition. To change that, you need to convince them that the person they’re directing their envy toward is actually a trigger to all the best things in life. For example, only play their favorite game when the other person or pet is there too. If your spouse comes and sits next to you on the couch, give your dog a tasty treat before they have a chance to act out.
If it’s another dog they’re jealous of, take them on walks and adventures only when they’re together. The first few times might not yield perfect behavior, but consistency will help the jealous dog associate family members with fun and treats rather than jealousy.
Helping a jealous dog learn to share their favorite person won’t happen in one day. They’re convinced they’re acting appropriately to protect what’s theirs, and that’s not something easily changed. Consistency, positive reinforcement, and patience will be essential. Come up with your plan of action and stick to it. Once your pup starts to change their behaviour, all your hard work will pay off.

🚨Attention all Cockapoo, Cavapoo and Poodle based dog owners. BRUSH, BRUSH & BRUSH SOME MORE 🐶 🚨
90% of Poodle Based Breeds we see at our groomers are matted.
Lockdown has brought an influx of poodle based breeds that are not receiving the daily maintenance upkeep they require.
Owners must brush their dogs every day without fail with a firm slicker brush - No other brush is fit for the job. Not only does daily brushing allow us to style your dog to look cute with fluffy long hair it prevents your dogs being in pain and discomfort with tight mats pulling on their skin. Brushing your dog is also a great way for your dog to bond with you and also learn that grooming is a major part of their life.

Poodle based breeds are extremely high maintenance, so here are some handy tips to help you keep on top of their coat and avoid matting;

To maintain your Cockapoos coat in good condition requires regular brushing and care every day. Their coats can vary between being curly like a poodle , wavy or straight.
Grooming is an essential part of owning a Cockapoo and is an important consideration when deciding if a cockapoo is right for you. Their coats are high maintenance and require regular grooming or will result in matts if not properly cared for. It is painful for them to endure long drawn out dematting sessions, so keeping on top of their coats helps prevents this.
Not only does grooming them help their condition of the coat by spreading the natural oils it also gets rid of debris, dead skin, knots and matts which can be uncomfortable for your dog. It is also an opportunity to check your dog for fleas and ticks and their general condition. Also grooming helps build up a bond between you both.

Brushing and de-matting
It is best to start early with a grooming regime so that your puppy gets used to it. You can do this is small stages spending a little time and then building up. It is very hard to keep a wriggly puppy still for long periods. Have some treats on hand to reward as you go along and constant reassurance will make the puppy feel more relaxed.

When puppies coats start changing into their adults coats (around 7-10 months of age ) you may find the texture is coarser and will tangle more. You will need to start having a more structured grooming regime to keep those nasty knots at bay.

Puppies often require a hygiene trim, keeping their fur cut short around their bums , helps prevent poo from clinging to their coat, which they can find upsetting and the cause of many a bum scoot! Trimming around the eyes may also be needed, always use safety scissors with rounded ends and pull hair away from eye and gently snip or ask a groomer to do it , if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

When brushing your Cockapoo's coat it is essential to brush thoroughly and not just brush the top but right down to the skin. Start off with a firm slicker brush and brush through the whole coat, you may find sectioning it off easier, lifting the coat up with brush and brushing through the section, getting down to the skin.
Next use a metal comb that will pick up any knots missed by the brush. Start off with a wider toothed comb for a general comb through and then go down in size to work on areas that need more attention. With Cockapoos pay attention to the ears, beard, legs and armpits as this is when you are most likely to find matts and knots.

Be careful not to yank but go carefully as if you catch a knot in the comb it is painful for them. Work out any knots by firmly holding the patch of coat that you are combing in your hands i.e. the coat between skin and the knot. Then try and separate the knotty bits and comb to break them down and remove. This helps prevent yanking the knot which is painful as you are not putting too much pressure on the hair root. If knot is really big or very matted then snip out with scissors.

Cockapoos can suffer with matts and knots particularly around the collar area, behind the ears, legs and in the armpit area. One way to help reduce around collar area is said to be to wear a rolled leather collar.

We recommend brushing at home every day and booking in for a full groom at least every 6 weeks. 🐶 ❤️

We stock a great selection of combs and brushes so pop down to get yours.

How To Help A Dog With Separation Anxiety 😘
With more of the nation going back to the office instead of working from home we are noticing more of our customers talk about their dogs being anxious.

Separation anxiety is a condition caused by a dog’s fear of being alone. And it’s a big problem for dog owners …

Behaviors caused by separation anxiety are problematic and exhausting. But they’re also manageable with the right approach.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety can cause behavior problems in dogs when they’re left alone. Common symptoms of separation anxiety may include one or more of the following:

Scratching and digging near doors and windows
Trying to escape
Destructive behavior such as chewing door frames or other items
Barking, whining or howling
Excessive salivation
Chewing on or licking themselves
In extreme cases, your dog may even urinate or defecate because of the physiological effect of prolonged stress.

What Causes Separation Anxiety In Dogs?

Dogs are pack animals by nature. In the wild, dogs are hardly, if ever, alone. That’s why they get nervous when they’re alone. And it’s why many dogs will suffer from separation anxiety when they’re separated from the people that they perceive as their pack!

But leaving your dog alone isn’t the only reason for separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is often the result of an underlying experience and is more likely to affect dogs who:

Haven’t spent much time alone.
Were abandoned at key points in their psychological development.
Weren’t properly integrated into their first home. (Maybe their owners left them confined to a small space without enough social interaction.)
Were removed from mother and littermates too early (prior to 8 weeks of age) or too late (after 14 weeks).
Have experienced a traumatic event, such as a frightening experience at a shelter or kennel. A significant change in their household or routine can also cause trauma. This could be a new person joining the family, a move to another house or a change in the owner’s work schedule.
Have a tendency to become extremely attached to their person, and then feel insecure when that person leaves. This might be a result of losing a home or person he was previously attached to.
How To Manage Separation Anxiety Naturally

There are lots of ways to help manage your dog’s separation anxiety naturally.

1. Play Some Music

Choose classical or easy listening music, since the idea is to help calm your dog. News radio can also work but not if the shows have excited hosts or loud debates. This will only cause your dog more anxiety.

You can also record normal household sounds and play the recording for comfort. Occasionally play the tape when you’re home so your dog doesn’t only associate the recording with your departure.

2. Use A Familiar Smell

Try leaving a worn item of clothing you wear for your dog when you leave. Like the sound of your voice, your smell can also bring comfort to your dog.

3. Change Your Dog’s Diet

There’s a strong link between diet and behavior so being aware of your dog’s diet can help. A lot of problems can occur when dogs eat poor-quality food … like kibble full of bad fats, salt and rice. So changing to a natural species-appropriate diet without any artificial ingredients can be very beneficial.

You also want to feed your dog twice per day to avoid any mood swings that can result from low blood sugar. Try feeding the biggest meal of the day before you go out as your dog will feel more content and sleepy after a satisfying meal.

4. Exercise Your Dog

Dogs have a lot of energy so it’s important for them to have a productive way to release it. So before leaving your dog alone, go for a walk, play with and exercise your dog.

This will help tire him out and it will make him feel happier and more relaxed.

5) Interactive toys
We highly recommend the Kong Wobbler £14.99 or lickimats from £6.99. Both are designed to stimulate your dogs minds and keep them occupied passing time allowing them to feel less anxious. Tried and tested, Rupert loves using these toys.

Another great option is to try some soothing treats that contain herbs known to calm nerves.
We recommend trying out Forthglade natural calming treats £2.29 or Laughing Dog Sleep tight treats £2.99. Both are really well received and reviewed by our visitors and their doggies 🐶💤 Natural ingredients using herbs to help sooth your dogs mood😀
