A small Devon based hamstery specialising in ethically raised Syrian hamsters.

I have been on and off breeding Syrian hamsters for the last 12 years and have been keeping them as pets for nearly twice as long. Tawridge hamstery is my newly launched breeders prefix, based on years of experience. In my teens I began working in the pet industry and observed the great misunderstandings at that time for the active and inquisitive natures of these brilliant little animals. In noti

ng the lack in appropriately sized cages and wheels easily available in the UK pet market back then, I discovered an enthusiasm for advocating higher standards of welfare. From that developed an interest in ethically breeding my own bloodlines of Syrians with the aim of producing hamsters with better health and temperaments, and encouraging others to enjoy the keeping of them them as much as I did. Many years on, I now find hamsters have really found the interest and enthusiasm that they deserve, and Tawridge is my new small scale hamstery with which I aim to re-establish myself in the hamster breeding community. The right equipment is everything when you're running a lifelong marathon! 🐾
Only a big wheel can allow a hamster to run at full stride, and Fruitcake is really going for it!

Syrian hamsters need wheels no less than 10.5"/27cm in diameter, and bigger is always better! The bigger the wheel, the more comfort, and less risk of spinal strain.

** Babies ready! 🎉 **

My current litter (Fruitcake x Mars) will be 8 weeks old tomorrow and they are ready to take on the world and find their forever homes!

I have 4 females and 4 males available.
All are happy, chunky, confident pups who will make fantastic pets. 🤩 It really has been a pleasure to raise them!

Fruitcake's babies are 3 weeks old today and thriving. 🥰

Yesterday they had their first proper cage clean and brief handling session with me. Unfortunately did not get more than a couple of photos as mum decided that 10 minutes of me time was more than enough so I had to cut things short to avoid upsetting her. In any rate the pups tired very quickly so it was best for all to be reunited.

We have 6 cheeky boys 💙 and 4 sassy girls 💜

The stork has landed!

This lovely lady is Fruitcake 🍇🍰
She gave birth Easter Saturday, is being a fantastic mum, and has been keeping the babies very well hidden from me! Her little jellybeans are 10 days old today and I've finally managed to get a proper peek and can confirm their wellbeing. I won't know how many there are for another few days when they really start making a break from the nest! But I can say that they look healthy, and the few coats I've seen are stunning. 🥰

I have high expectations for this litter, which has paired Fruitcake's amazing temperament with the show worthy good looks of dad Mars. The first litter of 2023 and the perfect way to bring in springtime. I can't wait to see them out in force!

2 young hammies from my Peppernut litter are re-available for homing. 14 weeks old (DOB 24th Oct '22).

Hazelnut (female Longhaired Chocolate Banded) is a very chunky, sassy girl! Shes an independent miss but coming around to being handled. She just can't sit still! This big lady is a real digger, and would benefit from a tank style cage that she can have a very deep layer of substrate to build burrows in.

Rudy (male Shorthaired Golden Banded) is a dinky little dude, and very very sweet. He is a placid soul and happy to sit in the hand, so perfect for the less confident handler. He runs like the wind when he gets on that wheel though! 😂

At 24 days the Peppernut babies are ruling the roost! In a few days time they will leave mum Nutmeg, much to her relief, and begin the very important learning journey to developing into adult hamsters.
Boys and girls will be split into same s*x bedrooms, and they will remain together for the following all-important 2 weeks helping each other adjust from the separation from mum, and teaching each other confidence and vital skills.

At 6 weeks they will then be ready for life on their own, as Syrian hamsters are strictly solitary from s*xual maturity.

After continued handling sessions we have confirmed 7 girls and 3 boys.
Individual pictures of each of the babies will be posted over the next few days with their names. 🥰

Our latest babies are out and about!
The first successful litter from one of our foundation pairs are ready to take on the world now that their eyes have fully opened. 😊 Mumma ham has her paws full!
Babies are 19 days old and have a lot to learn about being a ham before they are ready for their new homes.
