This is such an important point.
Cats have not been domesticated for that long, they still need their own place to hide away and feel safe from people, no matter how loving they are 😻

Being able to hide is vital for cats.
No matter how confident or outgoing your cat may be (or not), it's really important that every cat always has places in its home to retreat to and be hidden.
They help cats to feel safe, let them assess their environment from a secure place, give them a sense of control over what happens to them and ultimately increases their confidence. To achieve this, hiding places need to be:
- Easy to access – both physically and mentally, eg, it would not cause the cat additional distress in attempts to reach the hiding place
- Available at all times
- Quiet and without disruption
- Warm and comfortable
- Only they can access

Good examples include:
- Boxes, shelves, covered beds, open cupboards and spaces behind furniture pulled away from the wall.

Special considerations: Kittens, older cats and those with mobility issues may not be able to get up high, so ensure they can easily access their hiding places.

It's been 30 years since we lost Freddie Mercury and he continues to remain very close to our hearts. 💙 Not only are we big fans at Blue Cross but, he actually rehomed his beloved Delilah from us.

I love the look on the cat’s face! Basically waiting to be put down again 😹

If you have a cat who always stays up high watching other cats down below, that might be their way of trying to keep hold of territory.
But Leo would flippin love this tree!

😻 CAT CAFE REVIEW!
Maison de Moggy 🐈‍⬛ Edinburgh City centre.

Upon arrival in Edinburgh I discovered that Maison de Moggy was a few houses away from where I was staying, so of course I had to book! It was £10 entrance fee for 1 hour, then they’re hoping you’ll buy drinks and cakes.

The cats are all stunning. They are all from a breeder, acquired as kittens so they’ll get used to being constantly fussed, and on the whole I was pretty much ignored by all of them! They were mostly asleep (surprise) for the whole hour, apart from a stunning Maine c**n called Pauline, and a very sweet little sphynx called Elodie, who has her own heated bed, presumably because of her lack of fur.

My drink - orange hot chocolate - was divine, and there was plenty of beautiful merchandise for sale. But basically you wanna stroke fluffy cats. And there are fluffy cats for strokin. Not much more to it! Oh and the non-fluffy one likes to lick hands and apparently cream.

Go here to have a relaxing hour hoping the cats will all wake up and come sit on your lap (I don’t think they will 😸), a nice little city sojourn.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!...and because I’ve got the day off....

* BREED OF THE WEEK!! The only official Longhaired cat - THE PERSIAN

🇬🇧 In the UK each colour variety of Persian is classified as a different breed, but in the 🇺🇸 USA they are all one breed.

* All Persians have the same basic physical shape - their faces are flat with short noses and small ears, their bodies are broad-chested with sturdy legs and large paws, and they all have a soft, long, thick coat with a ruff around the neck.

* Persians are one of the oldest-known pedigree breeds! There are many colour variations, including black, white, tortoiseshell, lilac, golden, colourpoint and chinchilla.

🎀 All Persians are generally fairly placid, but need a great deal of attention, especially when it comes to grooming.

'Able Seacat' Simon received the PDSA's Dickin Medal in 1949 for his service on HMS Amethyst after surviving injuries from a cannon shell during the Yangtze Incident, raising morale and killing off a rat infestation.

Simon the Cat was found as a stray in Hong Kong and was adopted as the ship’s mascot by the crew of HMS Amethyst in 1949. He was smuggled aboard and proved himself to be an excellent rat catcher.

Simon gained a reputation for cheekiness, reportedly leaving presents of dead rats in sailors' beds and sleeping in the captain's cap.

On 20 April 1949, HMS Amethyst ran aground in the Yangtze River, 70 miles from Nanjing, China, whilst under fire from Communist artillery batteries. The three-month ordeal involving four Royal Navy ships became known as the ‘The Yangtze Incident’.

Simon was badly wounded in one of the first exchanges. He crawled back on deck and was rushed to the medical bay where the ship’s medical staff cleaned his burns, and removed four pieces of shrapnel.

He managed to survive and, after a period of recovery, he returned to his former duties. While anchored in the river, the ship had become overrun with rats but Simon rose to the challenge, and raised the morale of the sailors at the same time.

Following the ship’s escape from the Yangtze, Simon became an instant celebrity. He was praised in news reports around the world and presented with the Dickin Medal, known as the ‘Animal VC’. On his death, his funeral was attended by hundreds, including the entire crew of HMS Amethyst.

The Yangtze Incident Memorial at the Arboretum commemorates those who lost their lives during the incident.

IT’S BREED OF THE WEEK DAY BABY! 😻 The OCICAT 😻

🧡 This is a breed accidentally created in Michigan when a Siamese was mated with an Abyssinian, creating one ivory-coated kitten with clear golden spots. This kitten was named Tonga, and the resultant breed was named Ocicat due to its superficial similarity with the wild Ocelot.

💛 The breed was not recognised in the UK until 1998. Now the varieties are Brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, fawn, and cinnamon (pictured), as well as the silver-based versions of these colours.

🧡 The Ocicat is a long-bodied, well-muscled Cat, with a long, tapering tail.
