Here’s a nice story. I emergency fostered Lucy for a week and she was one of the most nasty dogs I have ever met! And I do mean nasty.
Totally shut down and extreme reactions to being touched of she didn’t want you to. She needed a VERY wide berth.
When people tell me they have a resource guarding dog they are scared of, they need to have met her 😆
There are videos of her on this page. Even needed to be sedated to see the vet. Doesn’t matter how she got that way, but that’s the way she was.
But she got the right long term fosterer / owner / set-up and right stuff in place and stacks of patience and she’s a different dog.
So well done Spaniel Aid and her owner.

Another pinned post for stud appointments FYI.

Scans

A huge impact of late for litter owners is the availability of scans. You usually get one around 28 days after the last day of mating (eggs implant around day 19) so they are able to be seen on the scan and some go a little later say 5 weeks after last mating as bones calcify around then.
You may have already observed subtle behavioural changes in the dam (more tired, quieter, pickier on food).

Getting a scan and understanding the litter size:
1. Helps you will selling so you know how many great buyers you need to find and,
2. Helps with the whelping as helps to know when dam has finished her labour (more experienced breeders will know how to do this) and,
3. Helps to know the expected date of delivery as the scan can predict (but if you use one of my studs I can do that too).

You can get one at your vets BUT it is expensive (c£110) and they mostly hate breeders and will only confirm a pregnancy and won’t tell you the number of pups, but there are now many more local canine scanning people and they charge around £30 - £40.

What we watching mum?
Find yourself a spot in the sofa but sssh! Don’t disturb the spans.
You start with Mungo (that’s his spot so he can keep an eye on the door), then Cordelia, then Margo (sits above my head in the other corner) and then Ludo who keeps my feet warm. And Coco under the coffee table.
Literally, they never change where they sit.

Well this was sort of inevitable wasn’t it?
Prince William taking some heat from PETA after having a litter of puppies by his wc gifted from his brother in law James Middleton.
As my friend said to me and hopefully someone said to them: stand by your beds 😃.
Now that’s a stud appointment that would defo appear in my (imaginary) book.
I’m looking for title suggestions by the way, if you have any as haven’t hit on one yet.
- Bitchy Tails
- Tall Tails from a Stud Handler
- The Real Dirty Dogs of Wiltshire
- Stud Book No 1

That sort of thing!

Just wanted to give you a quick update on Cordelia who will have her litter (sired by Ludo) in around 4 weeks.
I have taken 4 deposits reservations now (2 boys and 2 girls) from really fabulous forever slaves and I am looking for one more only, ideally from someone who is not bothered by whether it’s either a boy or a girl.
My other litter this year will be with Coco / Mungo in the Autumn and they will be solid black.

This is 😬

The KC new document (released tomorrow) on (broadly) why licences shouldn’t be required of small breeder and the real cost of breeding well.
And their costs are way out 😳

The fees they refer to hip and elbows are what you pay the BVA scrutineers: £70 (hips) and £70 (elbows) but you need x rays done at the vets for the scrutineers to scrutinise: c£350 depending on your vet. Phone yours up tomorrow and ask!

And…Haven’t heard of anyone ever saying that their licence was £70. Mine was £1200 and not much less to renew.

But here’s the rub: most buyers couldnt give a stuff what YOU spend on health tests and care of the litter.
They just want a cute puppy.

And the KC know that as - according to them - they register only a third of the estimated puppies bred (now that’s A LOT of non-KC dogs).

Buyers have to get with it. Simple as.

It not about bad breeders: mostly, breeders are well intended and just don’t know what they’re doing and even the KC can’t understand the costs of the tests!
I’ll say it: just too many d***y buyers as out there wanting to pay as little as possible and happy that ignorance is bliss and there’s just no excuse. I can spot one at 1000 paces (your dog is good looking / I want a fur baby / I want one that looks just like yours / I want a caramel one / a blonde one / can I have pictures of the mum / my kids have a load of abbreviations and a spaniel will help them / I need therapy dog / can I speak to my husband 🙃).

Bonkers.

So until buyers change and understand what should be involved with responsible breeding, why would any breeder change? They won’t. They don’t need to. They will still sell puppies.
You can’t have one without the other.
As a breeder, you pick your market and you tailor yourself to it. I do. TOP end.
And there’s only a handful of buyers out there.
And I’m OK with that.
But you want to appeal to the majority? And sell a lot? Make it cheap and offer a blanket with the scent of mum. And tell them how nice Flossie is. She’s lovely. Great with kids. Bought up with a family and a Hoover 😆. Works for mostly everyone 🤷‍♀️
Can’t knock the KC for trying - but it’s back to buyers: buyers actually control breeders - if you only but knew it.

This is interesting.
I would always recommend responsibly buying a dog (especially a family pet) or say a race horse on the basis of genetics (colour, health, breed, conformity etc) as a bedrock, but I have a hard core approach than most people out there - as you would expect with professional stud dogs. And there would be few puppies that would pass my standards.
So what do you think on all children?
I’m not sure on this one…I’m struggling with it.
Based on what I see for dogs out there, and how people feel after they have spoken to me (shocked), I can see why ignorance is bliss. And that’s just dogs!
Now apply that to humans and children …
Something to think on. Changing times ahead. Going to make dating interesting too 😅. I can’t see this one happening …

Feeding Pregnant Dams

I don’t raw feed although I do hear it’s very good.
So as Cordelia is pregnant, I’m going to pin these posts for stud appointments as often asked and easier this way.
Dams (especially spaniels) can become fussy when pregnant. That starts from around 3 weeks in and it’s an early sign.
So I feed Cordelia roast chicken, less kibble (which I will very shortly switch to a particular puppy kibble) as well as her usual wet meat. And I salmon oil and a vitamin B and E to all my dogs meals (good for the stud dogs and all their coats).
I feed her at 8am and 5pm (as I do all my dogs) and I will now include a lunch for her.
I might add scrambled egg, grated cheese or fish. Basically anything that keeps her food interesting and nourishing.
I sense they get more uncomfortable as they get bigger so a little and often, especially given they go off food at the end.
So play by ear and keep adapting it as the dam goes along. And you can do your own research and speak to other breeders to see what they do so you can evaluate what’s best in your view.
