Group recall
So on week 1 I said we would be able to do a group recall by week 8. You all looked at me like I was bonkers but we tried it today on week 7 and you all aced it. Your all bloomin Amazing and I’m so proud of you all. 🐾🐾🐾
Puppy Recall
Here’s a video of everyone doing their recall brilliantly today. So this weeks homework is to work on a wait/stay with you walking away from them ready for the recall (with present and finish for some) And a roll over and backup. 😃🐾
Practice what you teach
Here’s a video of my dogs doing a recall through temptation alley. I’ve never actually done this set up with them but I’ve taught them a lot of self control so I’m glad they could do it first time and every time. 😅
Sit beside owner
Who’s been practicing their homework this week? Teaching the dog to sit or stand beside the owner for heel work position. I choose my left side as that’s the traditional way to walk a dog in obedience training. Here I am showing Zuma doing both a German finish (straight to left side) and an English finish (round the back of me and to my left side). You don’t have to teach them both. You or your dog may find one way easier than the other. If your struggling to get a good position it may be helpful to stand beside a wall or other barrier beside you to get that straight sit position. Don’t forget to also practice rewarding eye contact this week. Please do add videos of your practicing. 😃🐾
Self control
I teach my dogs value for a bed and self control because it helps with a number of different behavioural problems. To stop an unwanted behaviour you need to replace it with a desired behaviour and make it fun for the dog.
I use Hi-K9 beds as it makes it really clear for the dog where the boundary is and where they should be. If a dog succeeds and gets rewarded for it, they will learn a lot quicker than they will with failure. Set your dog up to succeed and reward often. If they fail just go back a step and make it easier again.
Here’s two example scenarios where dogs need self control.
🚪 Doorbell rings, dog barks, door opens, dog runs out, jumps up at person, barks at person. 🌟 Instead-teach the dog that the doorbell rings, they go and sit on their bed whilst you deal with the person at the door, then go back and reward the dog for being calm and away from the door.
🍲 Dinner time, dog sits begging beside the table or under the table, might even counter surf or steal off the side. 🌟 Instead-at dinner time the dog learns to go to his bed and gets rewarded for being calm and staying there.
