Burghley Estate, Stamford, one of England’s most prestigious historic Estates, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Gamekeeper and Park Ranger to manage and maintain the estate’s sporting and conservation interests. This is a unique opportunity to work in a stunning environment, ensuring the responsible management of wildlife, woodland, and game shooting activities across the Estate.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering up to 20 days of driven and walked-up shooting per season, ensuring all aspects of game management, habitat enhancement, and predator control are conducted to the highest standards. In addition to gamekeeping duties, the role requires extensive involvement in vermin control, year-round deer and grey squirrel management, and the general upkeep of the Estate’s parkland and woodlands.

The role will require autonomy, but will report to the Head of Land and Property. Burghley Park shoot has been run continuously for many decades, using the beautiful grounds of Burghley Park and surrounding farmland to deliver high quality days. The role will be predominantly based (and housed) in Burghley Park, but the wider Estate will at times come into the remit.
Key Responsibilities
Gamekeeping & Sporting Management:
• Working with the Land and Property team to organise and deliver up to 20 shoot days per season, ensuring exceptional standards for guests at all times.
• Day to day management of shoot infrastructure.
• Implement and oversee all aspects of predator and vermin control, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical best practices.
• Maintain game cover crops, pens, feeders, and shoot infrastructure.
• Liaise with Estate staff, beaters, and shoot day personnel to ensure smooth operations.
• At times, taking guests out for guided deer stalking outings and arranging duck flighting opportunities.
Wildlife & Deer Management:
• Conduct year-round control of grey squirrels and other vermin to protect woodland and biodiversity.
• Manage the Estate’s fallow deer herd, ensuring a healthy, balanced population in line with conservation and welfare best practices.
• Undertake selective culling as required, processing carcasses for Estate use or sale.
• Monitor wildlife populations and implement conservation initiatives to support biodiversity.
Estate & Woodland Maintenance:
• Assist with forestry operations, including planting, thinning, and felling as necessary.
• Carry out fencing repairs, footpath maintenance, and general Estate upkeep.
• Support habitat management projects to enhance the Estate’s natural environment.
• Maintain Estate machinery, equipment, and vehicles to a high standard.
• Wider Park responsibilities include, being part of the fire salvage team and the park security team.

The Ideal Candidate

• Proven experience as a Gamekeeper, Deer Manager, or in a similar countryside management role.

Sandhill Veterinary Services Ltd requires a lab / office assistant for the summer period (April / May until October) to work in our busy game bird and poultry vet practice and lab.

The role primarily involves:
• Sample handling/weighing – Faeces, bacteria, organic material, bird carcasses.

Single Handed Keeper Position, (Cheshire)

An experienced gamekeeper is required to join a family run shoot, shooting over circa 2500 acres in the heart of Cheshire. The owners of the shoot want to continue to develop the shooting on the estate so the right candidate will have experience with Pheasants, English Partridges and Ducks.
The shoot undertakes approximately 15 driven days shooting each season, with a handful of rough days. It is the objective of the owners of the estate to build upon and enhance the biodiversity and habitat on the estate, so the role will also include general estate maintenance and woodland management.
The successful applicant must have a minimum 5 years’ experience in the shooting industry and the self-motivation and ability to work on their own or as part of a team when necessary. The successful applicant will have good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with the local community, farmers, and key stake holders. Presentation of the shoot is key not only on shoot days but throughout the year, therefore a keen eye for detail is essential.
Applicants must also have a full UK driving license, valid shotgun and fi****ms certificates and be a trained vermin controller. The following is desirable, minimum DSC Level 1, ATV, sit-astride, brush cutter and chainsaw certificates, Further training will be provided as required.

Head Gardener Position
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join our existing small team, at a large Country House / Farm in Country Durham. The property comprises a historic mansion house, with associated formal gardens, kitchen garden and parklands, along with woodlands and agricultural land. The position available is a working estate manager and deer stalker. The applicant will berequired to demonstrate the ability to work alone but as part of a team, with part-time ghillies required during the season. The individual should be able to demonstrate management and leadership skills, with a good work ethic. Deer stalking remains the main activity, but land uses have gradually diversified to include more forestry, peatland restoration and renewables. Therefore, the applicant will require a willingness to work across a diverse range of activities.
DEER STALKING
The estate is part of the Knoydart Deer Management Group and deer management is strictly controlled through the wider deer management plan, adjusting annual culls to both grazing pressure and recruitment. The owners currently look to cull 20 to 25 stags and 60 hinds and calves per annum. The deer forest is accessed by boat over Loch Quoich or Land Rover/ATV tracks to the south.
FISHING
The estate has fishing available on Loch Quoich, with a fishing boat available for the family and guests.
HOLIDAY & PROPERTY LETTING
The estate has two properties which it rents out as holiday lets. The role includes looking after the estate properties and guests. The applicant should be willing and able to support with maintenance of the properties and hill tracks. Potential opportunity for the applicant’s partner to assist with housekeeping of the holiday lets.
FORESTRY AND PEATLAND RESTORATION
The estate has existing conifer woodlands and recently planted a new native woodland with more planting being considered. In time, these trees will provide critical shelter for deer and a diverse range of habitats for flora and fauna. Peatland restoration has recently commenced with a 72 hectares scheme underway in the heart of the estate, with sustainability a key objective. The applicant would be required to maintain records and schedules of habitat growth and restoration, in line with management’s and governmental obligations
APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE
• Previous deer stalking and management experience
• Knowledge and experience with boats (desirable)
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbally
• ATV/Argo ticket (desirable)
