Really hot here today ☀️☀️☀️☀️ please keep your animals cool. Bring indoors or move into the shade - remember the sun will move during the day so a shady spot in the morning could be full sun by the time you return home.
Frozen bottles wrapped in towels to lay next to or cool packs to lay on. Watery veg like cucumber, watermelon, lettuce etc.
We’ve got all our air conditioning units on and will check on the piggies here regularly.❤️

Yesterday we were asked to take on these two senior ladies❤️❤️. They will retire here with us and be cared for and treasured. Piggies come into the sanctuary for all kinds of reasons. It is never their fault and we help if we can. There is absolutely no judgment and it takes courage to ask for help.
The hard fact is we can only offer this if we have the space and the funds to do so. We are extremely grateful for any donations. We constantly need:-
Hay - use 5 bales a week
Dry feed - we use 40kg a week
Vegetables - we use 40 buckets a week
Newspaper, shavings, forage and medical bills etc obviously as well.

Cressida has been returned to us today. She was originally adopted from the rescue a couple of years ago. Sadly her buddy has passed away and her family wanted her to come back to us to join a herd. She will quarantine with Charlie, our chaperone piggy for 3 weeks. Then move into one of our group setups and stay with us for the rest of her life.❤️❤️

Ziggy and Pippi have joined us today. Their family have said a sad goodbye but they are welcome to keep in touch.
When piggies arrive they all have a health check, weighed, nails trimmed and an anti mite treatment (ivermectin). They then quarantine for 3 weeks while they settle and learn our routine. We get to know them so we can make the right decisions for their next steps. There’s no hurry just love and care ❤️❤️

🐹 FUN FACT 2: Guinea Pig Appreciation Day was launched on the 16th July 2016 by Piggles Guinea Pig Rescue in Canada. They realised that, although almost every other animal had its "day", guinea pigs did not. So, they started one for them! 🙌❤️

Gorgeous chunky ladies arrived here yesterday.❤️❤️❤️ they have been much loved and cared for. Such a difficult decision for their owner to make. Compassion and not judgment is key especially in cases like this.❤️❤️❤️

A great post. Just because these are expensive doesn’t mean they are good. We will not rehome to these setups.

A great post. Just because these are expensive doesn’t mean they are good. We will not rehome to these setups.

I do always feel a bit bad telling people these aren’t suitable, as they are so expensive! There’s a couple of things we need to address that are problematic.

Firstly, look at the size of the enclosed area. If you were thinking of using it as a permanent home, if it was raining, they would be restricted to that small bit. The advertising also suggests you shut them in that section at night, which again isn’t appropriate as Guinea Pigs are active at all hours.

Secondly, the base of the run is wired, presumably to keep predators out. Wire floors aren’t suitable for Guinea Pigs delicate feet and can cause bumble foot - which is seriously nasty!

I’ve also heard tales of them not actually being predator proof.

If you would like to keep your Guinea Pigs outside for the summer, you would be better off with a solidly built hutch (6 foot for a pair, ideally situated under shelter) and then daily supervised access to a run on the grass.

Great post.

Great post.

It's that stupid time of year again...
Every post on social media showing Guinea pigs, desperately trying to 'swim' in pools, as a result of clueless human misjudgement and a severe lack of appropriate education, needs reporting.
Guinea pigs, do not 'enjoy' deep water, nor is it safe (obviously). Nor should they stay wet or even damp, for more than is absolutely necessary even after being appropriately bathed for healthcare or medical reasons.
Guinea Guardians with any common sense, are already aware that Guinea pigs have no gag reflex and can choke easily when water is excessively introduced into their mouth, particularly from large amounts, freely gulped whilst they panic trying to get to safe ground in deep water. Many Guinea pigs get life threatening respiratory infections from water being forceably introduced into their mouths.
It is hard enough dispensing small amounts of water to sick Guinea pigs, from a syringe, under medical supervision and guidance... so it really doesn't take a genius to know a Guinea pig, that is absolutely NOT a natural swimmer, will panic and likely drown or develope respiratory infections.
Let's also mention the sheer panic of those guineas desperately trying to get to solid ground...that is clear to see... on some of these abhorrent high sided pool videos!
Any Guinea pig that survives such practices in paddling or swimming pools has done so by sheer luck.
The practice is most definitely NOT recommended by any educated or Guinea savvy Guardians.
If you see any post with Guinea pigs in swimming or paddling pools, report it for the Guinea pigs sake.
I won't even mention the fact that the thorough drying of any wet Guinea pig, for acceptable shallow bathing, is equally important because that's also common sense...right.
*I'm willing to offend on this one. I've already reported several of these ridiculous posts and will continue to report them.

Another 3 dropped off yesterday. That’s 10 this week and we’ve sadly had to say no to a lot more. The hard truth is every piggy that comes through the door costs us money. Many need medical care on top of everything else. Unfortunately we don’t have a magic money tree and along with some challenging attitudes we deal with it makes us wonder how we can continue. Example - yesterday we were asked to collect some piggies from quite a distance to us but we couldn’t as we were scattering my dad’s ashes and had to be back for another surrender. To put it politely the people were less than impressed.
There’s lots goes on to keep a rescue running that we don’t go on about and we deal with some pretty awful situations. We do this in our own time at our own expense as well as jobs, children and other commitments.
We are considering our options 😥
