Intervertebral Disc Disease Rehabilitation
Honey was referred to us for physiotherapy and hydrotherapy following an acute episode of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Honey underwent a hemilaminectomy surgery to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord. Unfortunately, this left her unable to stand independently or to walk.
We are so pleased with Honey’s progress to-date. Within just two hydrotherapy sessions she has regained ambulatory status! She is now able to stand and walk independently- although a little bit wobbly. We hope this will improve throughout her rehabilitation. Honey’s owners have been so dedicated to her home exercise plan, undoubtedly aiding in her recovery. Keep up the good work, Honey!🩵

This week we are looking at the Splenius. This muscle runs from the mid wither and extends cranially to the poll. Splenius is predisposed to strain and injury in disciplines such as dressage where an outline is maintained. This is why it is important to keep a varied training routine to avoid excess stress on these structures.

🐕Canine Enrichment 🐶 Keeping your dog mentally stimulated doesn’t have to mean hours of walking and tennis ball throwing 🎾 Excessive exercise can be detrimental in a puppy’s development and in some instance can lead to joint damage 🦴 Some ideas include: chew toys, puzzles and licky mats. Here, Ralph is kindly demonstrating the use of a licky mat with a liver paste. This will keep his mind occupied and out of trouble 😊
🐾During spinal assessment, the epaxial muscles and vertebral joints are palpated. This video is an example of muscle spasm upon palpation of the epaxial musculature which is indicative of muscular pain or discomfort. This was likely a result of this little dog twinging his back out on his walk. This case was relieved with simple massage techniques and upon re-palpation there was a great difference in the tissue response 😊 *Posted with owner’s permission*
