It has come to our attention that a lot of people who currently feed raw (Durham Animal Foods in these examples) believe that the mince is a "complete" diet and this is unfortunately incorrect.
DAF mince is 100% meat, bone and offal. This is a great base for a healthy raw diet but needs more essential nutrients that meat alone can not provide. To make the mince "complete" other ingredients are needed, most importantly a source of fibre and micro nutrients. Vegetables, fruit and herbs are an ideal way to make sure the diet contains everything your dog needs. It is up to you to find out which nutrients you want from which ingredients or to buy a nutrient mix to add to the food.
Of course the easiest way to make sure your dog gets everything they need is to buy a "complete" raw food. The word "complete" specifically means it has everything a dog needs for a healthy diet without needing additives.
A lot of raw producers use numbers like 80/10/10, and although it can be helpful at a glance, it often causes confusion when different brands use the numbers in different ways...
For example...
Durahm AF use the term 80/10/10 and it refers to the fact the mince contains 80% meat, 10% bone & 10% offal. This is mince to use as a base to make your own raw feed.
Cotswalds on the other hand use numbers like 80/20 but the 80 in this instance means 80% meat/bone/offal and the 20% refers to the vegetables and herbs that are added to make this into a "complete" meal.
All of this is only to say make sure you know what you are feeding your dog and whether it is a complete meal or not. Most complete meals will have the word "complete" on the front of the packaging. We realise the world of raw feeding can be frightening and complicated. But a search online or reading the packaging will often tell you everything you need to know.
