“Animal rights is the most unextreme philosophy I can imagine. It is about nonviolence. It is about compassion. It is about not harming and not causing suffering and not killing when we don’t need to. That is it...
It is really, truly that simple.”

Are a landowner across the greater Belfast Hills area? Are you hoping to improve the quality of biodiversity on your land in 2025? Would you like to take a more environmentally friendly approach to farming and don't know where to start?

Why not plant more trees?! The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Small Woodland Grant Scheme is currently open for application. Funding is available for new native woodland planting of 0.2ha or more on agricultural and non-agricultural land. The establishment grant can cover costs including prep, trees, labour, maintenance & some stock fencing. Land converted from agricultural use to woodland can also be eligible for annual premia, an area-based payment of up to £350/ha per year.

Get in contact with our Woodland Officer, Laura, who can visit your site to provide advice on the grant, planting plans & other queries around woodland creation.
Message us, email [email protected] or call 028 9060 3466 (Monday - Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm). Further information on the BHP Woodland Project, which is delivered in partnership with The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland, can be found here:

❄️🕊️ HELP NEEDED 🕊️❄️

Is there anyone who has a decent car and would be able to travel to Greenmount and pick up some wild bird seed and chicken feed for us today?

The wild birds depend on us for food in this cold weather. Our chickens have generously shared some of their food, but are now running out too.

Can you help? Please let us know.

The Hunting Act was implemented to curb fox hunting, it left behind loopholes that hunts exploit to continue their barbaric activities under the guise of secrecy. But there's hope on the horizon! The May Amendments offer a chance to close these loopholes and put an end to fox hunting once and for all. These amendments are straightforward and can be put into action immediately. Join us in our fight against this outdated and inhumane practice. Sign our petition and urge your MP to support the May Amendments. Together, we can make a difference and protect our precious wildlife.

At least three foxes were terrorised by a pack of dogs during a recent hunt in County Antrim.

A 20 December 2024 report in the Irish Field outlined that the first fox was found in a bog. The East Antrim hunt's dogs "screamed away" after the unfortunate animal who was eventually "marked to ground beside the motorway".

In fox hunting terminology, “marked to ground” refers to the point when the pack of hounds chase the fox into an earth or drain. This is typically followed by the arrival of the hunt’s terriermen who cruelly catch the fox using shovels, spades and terriers before the doomed animal is pulled out and brutally killed.

Later, a fox was chased "on a wide circle" before he ran for cover and, according to the Irish Field report, was "left for another day".

Another fox was targeted "near Laurel View Equestrian Centre, owned by Robert Davis who was following on a quad".

Running for his life, this fox "brought them on a spin through Edmund Arthur’s - who breeds thoroughbreds - then over Brian and Jayne McConnell’s, who won the 2024 Randox Ulster National with Jumping Jet, trained by Gordon Elliot..."

This fox was also marked to ground.

DID YOU KNOW? Irish taxpayer-funded Horse Racing Ireland has handed out over €12 million to hunts since 2014 (in the form of point to point racing grants). The East Antrim hunt has received €317,900 including €49,500 for 2023.

Commerz Real AG is the German company that owns Victoria Square shopping centre in Belfast. For several days, a Black-Headed Gull has been trapped within the dome of the complex.

The centre is refusing rescue.
They are contacting an exterminator.

Our natural wildlife is in dire need of protection, and faceless conglomerates such as Victoria Square Shopping Centre, Belfast need to realise that situations such as this will only serve to have the facilities boycotted.
