Just wanted to clarify that Scarlet & Stan is still winding down and once items are gone, they’re gone! After that, we will cease to trade.

I have so much going on at the moment which is why I’ve moved over to Shopify - they take care of our inventory and all orders as I don’t have the capacity to offer face to face delivery or collection anymore. I’m sorry if this is inconvenient to anyone but there’s no other way I can do it.

I’ll put items on as and when I can and I’ll keep you informed! I’m sorry but I can’t do custom orders.

I began Scarlet & Stan because I had left teaching and wanted to create things for my wonderful little fur babies. It was so rewarding to see other animals wearing my creations and I had high hopes for the future.

Unfortunately, things went a bit wrong around Christmas. Not only was my workshop destroyed, but a huge order of stock wasn’t sent and I spent a lot of time trying to get money back. I wasn’t able to launch the products I had worked on and I decided to have a little break.

Since then, I’ve tried so hard to get things going again but recent events have really left me questioning why I’m doing this. A “charity” that stocked my products have decided to lie and not pay me for items that have been left with them to sell. After months of them ducking and diving, ignoring messages and not turning up when we’d arranged to meet, I was finally able to remove my remaining stock, leaving an invoice for the goods that were sold. Today, they have decided to lie and say that the items on the inventory weren’t left with them (even though they agreed at the time) and are refusing to pay up. They insist they didn’t have certain items, but there are photos of those items, in their shop, on their page. Customers who bought things from them - that they say they never had - have messaged me. I wish I was the type of person who could just let this go over her head but anyone who knows me knows I’m a worrier. The nasty, sarcastic and rude messages I’ve received have taken their toll, and the lovely little business I created just feels like a nightmare. This has broken me.

So….

I had been planning a big launch of our new “Sweet Mallow-dy” range, including new pastel hoodies and our new harness, leash and collar sets; I don’t think I can face doing that now.

The hoodies are pretty much ready. When the harness sets arrive I’ll post the details and they’ll be available to order for a short while. After that, all stock that’s left will be split and donated - any suggestions for animal sanctuaries or legitimate animal charities would be welcome.

Please remember this when you see your self employed friends or family who don’t always seem themselves.

“The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business”

Running a business is extremely hard.

What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid back people.

People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.

People expect you to be available 24/7 and at the drop of a hat because “you work for yourself so you can make time” unfortunately this is not the case most of the time.

Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.

You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend... it’s one of the hardest things you will try and balance ever.

There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.

Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!
