This week I hosted the Canine Principles Skill Hub Webinar with Guest Speaker Gemma Hodson of The Dynamic Dog Practitioner Programme. Gemma teaches Behaviourists and Trainers how to conduct observations and identify the subtle signs of possible pain in their clients dogs who have presented with behavioural issues. It was a very interesting chat, Gemma and I studied Tellington Ttouch many years ago together at Tilley Farm, Gemma went on to specilise in ACE freework before developing the Dynamic Dog Practitioner Training Course. If you're interested in viewing this webinar, it can be found on the Canine Principles Website at www.canineprinciples.com

When I was training, I learned that fascia is “the environment in which the nervous system lives” it’s an incredibly interesting subject for behaviour and bodywork geeks.

🦟HOW TO USE A TICK TWISTER ✅
DO NOT DELAY removing the tick. Prompt removal reduces the risk of contracting Lyme Disease and other tick borne diseases.
Remember to disinfect the bite area and wash your hands thoroughly after removal.
It is advisable to have some sellotape ready to put the tick in so you can easily inspect to and check you have safely removed the entire tick.
❗️ BEWARE OF MISINFORMATION ONLINE ❗️
DO NOT do any of the following:
• burn the tick
• smother the tick in Vaseline
• rub around it with a cotton bud
• squeeze the tick
• stick tape over it
• try to pull it out with ordinary eyebrow tweezers
If you do anything to it while it is attached and feeding other than removing it as described above you will be distressing the feeding tick which will make it more likely to regurgitate it’s blood meal back into the dog and therefore spread tick born diseases such as Lyme Disease (Borreliosis) Babesiosis, and Ehrlichiosis and bacteria into the dogs body.

The Border Force Agency should be commended for proactively supporting the maintenance of physical health and welfare of their very hard working canine staff. Supporting highly trained working dogs to keep functioning effectively should never be considered as a wasteful or frivolous use of funds.

The response from Natalie Lenton of The Canine Massage Therapy Centre sums it up perfectly.

The Home Office claimed critics were 'barking up the wrong tree'

Here’s two of my dogs, Hank and Kelly (son and mum) enjoying the glorious weather. Both dogs benefit from regular massage therapy to keep their muscles healthy functioning correctly. Massage is great for young dogs too, helping them to feel confident and comfortable with human contact, which can greatly help when it comes to taking your dog to the vets for examinations.
Massage is beneficial for dogs of all ages, abilities and activity levels.

⚠ Beware of microchip scams ⚠

Microchipping your pet is an essential step in keeping them safe, but did you know that not all microchip registration services are legitimate?

We recently had a case where a client rehomed a pet and paid to transfer the microchip details to their name through a website called 'Petchip Network'. A year later, they discovered that the transfer had never actually taken place, and the previous owner was still registered on the microchip. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

Here are a couple of articles that highlight the growing concern:
🔗 https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/pet-owners-risk-500-fine-for-using-unaccredited-microchip-company-petchip-acr4g4g1KNd8

We’ve also received reports that 'Petchip Network' have been emailing pet owners, claiming their pets' microchip has expired and asking for payment to update it.

To ensure your pet’s safety, always make sure microchip registrations and transfers are handled through DEFRA-approved databases. Trusted databases include Animal Tracker, Petlog, Identibase, and SmartTrace. If you’re ever in doubt, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance.

You can also check if your pet’s microchip is correctly registered by entering the microchip number at www.check-a-chip.co.uk. Remember, a microchip is only useful if it holds the correct owner information!

Stay vigilant and keep you and your pet safe! 🐾
