Message from Cathryn Mellersh

The fundraising appeal for the Canine Genetics Centre has now raised over £170,00, which is about half of our target for this year, and importantly enough to secure the future of the Centre until at least the end September. That we have raised this much in just over three months is incredible.
The CGC team would like to thank each and every Club, Society, Welfare group and individual that has donated. The support we have received has been truly overwhelming and we have been moved by all the messages we have received, telling us how much our research is appreciated by so many people from the dog world.
Discussions are underway with several potential sponsors, that we hope will generate longer term funding for the CGC.
However, the amount of support generated for the CGC thus far demonstrates the level of grass roots support there is from dog owners and breeders, for a research centre that is dedicated to safeguarding the genetic health of our dogs.
The CGC exists to help all breeds, regardless of the number of dogs registered, or whether their humans have donated to the fundraising appeal. This week alone, CGC staff have spent several hours answering questions from two breed representatives, neither of which have yet donated to the CGC.
The funds raised so far have been equally distributed between Clubs/Societies/Groups and individuals - so even if your respective Club has decided not to donate to the CGC please consider making an individual donation.
Even very modest donations accumulate. For example, people can donate as little as £5 or £10 by texting:
DOG5 or DOG10 to 70033
Thank you for your continued support.

Dear all,

This message is to be shared please. We need as many to participate as possible in this survey. It has been shared on most of the GR Breed Club FB pages but not everyone are members of these clubs.
We need all Golden owners and breeders to take part, including our overseas friends. The more we know about this condition the better and statistics cannot be ignored.
I have tried negotiating, discussing and talking to both the BVA and KC but all has failed, so I am determined to gather as much information as possible from all concerned.
I thank all breeders who have been in touch privately with their pedigrees and information. It is invaluable evidence. 🥰

As most of you will know Glaucoma was added to the BVA/KC schedule of “Known Inherited Eye Disease” some time ago. This was done without consultation with our breed and before sufficient data had been collected. It is important that we gather sufficient evidence to either substantiate or refute whether we have a problem. I would urge you all to complete this simple survey in order to further our understanding.

Thank you.

share where appropriate!

This is shared from my Breed Health Coordinator’s FB (private) group.

The Canine Genetics Centre team led by Dr Cathryn Mellersh will have flyers, A4 posters and postcards available for distribution at Crufts 2024 (March 7th - March 10th).
On Thursday Cathryn will be visiting the Discover Dogs stands to drop off flyers but if anyone would like to come past the CAGT Stand 39 Hall 5 and pick some up they are very welcome to help distribute them.
There will be a joint CGC/CAGT piece published in Our Dogs on Wednesday March 6th.

Below here we share a (generic) flyer produced by Louise Scott for the ESS Breed Clubs which we hope might be of interest.

It brings back so many memories from my childhood. Taking the bus from the Top of Deneside to the Harbour was a daily thing. Although it only seems like yesterday it was more than 60 years ago!! Now I feel really old!! 🤗🤗🤗
