To Adopt a Syrian You Need:
- an enclosure/cage size of at least 100x50cm. Examples of appropriate cages are the Savic plaza , Zoo zone 2 Large, Mamble Cage, Ritz large cage, Volta 100cm Cage, The Kelyan Cage,Alexander cage and the Ferplast Maxi cage.
-You’ll also need a wheel size of 28cm plus to accommodate their backs so they don’t get curved spine (Large Trixie Wheel).
-6 inches of safe bedding to at least on side of the cage (no sawdust or wood shavings) as due to the dust it causes respiratory illness’s. Safe bedding types include Carefresh, Clean n Cozy, SmallPetSelect Bedding, and Teabag Bedding.
- plenty of chews, hides, and enrichment, this will help keep your hamsters teeth down and they will feel more safe from open spaces and also keeps them mentally stimulated.
-Hamsters need a sand bath to clean themselves and also use it as a toilet.
Reptile sand without added calcium is really good (added calcium is lethal).
-NO HAMSTER BALLS only free roam using play pen or bath.

To those who have read the above and are wondering why such a small animal would need that please keep reading. It is a known fact as we advance into the future our knowledge continues to grow on so many things like mental health, medication, and even pet care. It is cruel to keep any animal in a cage that is the equivalent to a cell for us for all their lives, Hamsters are very active animals who live underground in burrows and travel up to five and a half miles per night so it’s important they have a cage size as large as they can get. Since they are so active they need access to a wheel constantly that accommodates their back or else they will end up with curved spine and constant back pain, even if your wheel is smaller than the minimum hamsters are easily bored so they’ll try to run on it anyways if it hurts or not. They need bedding high enough to make burrows in since they’re burrow animals it’s a natrual instinct for them, the bedding must be safe examples of safe bedding are Paper bedding (no ink), Aspen, Chipsi, and Tea bag bedding.
Hamsters need atleast a few different chews as their teeth constantly grow and if they can’t wear them down themselves you’ll have to get a vet to do it or their teeth will grow through into their nasal passage and then their brain. Since hamsters are prey animals to mainly birds they hate a lot of open space which is why I recommend a lot of hides for them to feel safe. I also recommend as much enrichment as you can as hamsters are easily bored and can result to stress behaviours such as constant climbing and chewing of their cage. Hamsters are dessert animals so they use the sand to clean themselves which is why I always insist on a sand bath there is only two types of safe sand as cheap made hamster sand are very dusty like chinchilla sand/chinchilla dust and If inhaled will cause damage/irritation to their respiratory systems since they’re so sensitive, if using reptile sand do not use the added calcium sand this is lethal to hamsters. Hamster balls are dangerous to hamsters because the ventilation slits are a perfect size for your hamsters feet to get caught in and damaged. If the hamster keeps bumping into objects they can get something similar to shaken baby syndrome, hamsters have no control over their balls since they are constantly moving this is scary to hamsters they don’t enjoy it.
