As we are set for another really cold snap - please see the very useful advice from Battersea on how to help your dog in this winter weather❄️

1. WRAP UP ON WALKS
It may be cosy indoors, but your dog needs regular walks regardless of the weather. When out on walks it’s important to make sure your four-legged friends are wrapped up warm. Put a dog coat on them when you go out, especially if you have a fine-coated dog, such as a Greyhound or Staffie.

2. CHECK FOR SNOW BETWEEN THEIR TOES
Check your dog’s paws and dry them thoroughly after they've been outside. This is especially important with long-haired dogs as they are prone to snow compacting between their toes and turning into ice balls which can prove very painful. If they are agreeable, you could trim the long hair between your dog’s toes to help prevent this.

3. CHECK FOR SALT AND GRIT BETWEEN THEIR TOES
Clean their paws at the end of your walk as salt and grit from roads and pavements can also get lodged between their toes.

4. KEEP THEM WARM AND DRY
Dry off wet and muddy dogs after walks and make sure they have a cosy bed to return to which is away from any cold draughts.

5. KEEP THEM ACTIVE INDOORS
Some dogs can be very reluctant to venture out into the cold. If this is the case, do not force them out but make sure you provide them with lots of toys for them to play and keep them occupied while indoors.

6. ADJUST THEIR FOOD IF NECESSARY
If you do find that your dog is less active in the winter months, make sure you adjust the amount of food you give them accordingly to avoid weight gain.

7. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE GOOD RECALL
Cold weather often brings reduced visibility in foggy or snowy weather conditions. If you're letting them off the lead, make sure your dog has good recall to avoid them getting lost and, as always, make sure their microchip details are up to date with your correct contact information.

8. MAKE THEM VISIBLE
As the nights draw in earlier and the sun rises later, attach a small light to your dog's collar so they can be seen when out on walks in reduced visibility.

9. NEVER LEAVE YOU DOG IN THE CAR UNATTENDED
Just as cars can become fatally hot in summer months, temperatures can drop very quickly in cold weather. Always take your dog with you rather than leaving them in the car for any length of time.

10. STAY AWAY FROM FROZEN LAKES AND RIVERS
Keep your dog away from stretches of frozen water as it's impossible to tell how secure the surface is. Keep them on a lead if you think they’ll be tempted to jump in.

February 2nd is National Hedgehog Day - here’s how you can help protect them!

Hedgehogs are great for your garden, because they help keep unwanted insects at bay! In the UK, it’s currently hibernation season, and unfortunately our spiky little friends are becoming increasingly endangered – but there’s always plenty to be done to protect them.

Take a look at some of our top tips below:

• Create a log pile – Log piles provide shelter for insects and, therefore, make the perfect foraging place for hedgehogs. Create your log pile in a shady area of the garden, replenishing the logs every now and again as the wood begins to rot down.

• Add variety to your garden – Having a mixture of plants, shrubs and trees in your garden may be a long-term strategy but it aids massively in provided shelter and food for hedgehogs and a variety of other animal species.

• Create a wildlife pond – Don’t let the word “pond” be a worry, as you can simply use a shallow container or a water-tight structure like a sink in order to create a pleasant drinking place for hedgehogs. Plants will colonise here naturally, and rainwater can be used to fill it up!

• Add a hedgehog home to your garden – Provide a safe place for hedgehogs to rest by placing a hedgehog home somewhere peaceful in your garden. View our range of animal houses here.

• Create a compost heap – Compost heaps are rife with worms, slugs and earwigs which provide essential sustenance for hedgehogs. Build your compost heap on soil rather than solid ground to ensure easy access for these creepy crawlies.

Please see this useful information below from the PDSA on dressing up your pet

When it comes to pet clothes, there is a big difference between comfort and vanity. As today is , we'd like to remind owners that dressing up your pet may seem harmless and a bit of fun, but unfortunately, it is often at your pet's expense 😞

[Visual description: An infographic reads 'pet clothes - comfort vs. vanity'. On one side a Chihuahua dressed up in a dragon costume sits alongside the word 'vanity', and on the other a Vizsla wears a well-fitted dog coat alongside the word 'comfort'. Vanity points include: Unventilated costumes and clothing could cause pets to overheat. Movement and body language is restricted. This could make other animals act aggressively towards your pet. Clothes can be itchy when your pet is trying to rest. Clothes can get in the way of everyday actions such as going to the toilet, causing stress and aggravation. Loose parts could get tangled or caught up. They might also be a choking hazard Comfort points include: Clothes such as high visibility jackets can help to keep pets safe. Their body language is not restricted and can be easily read. Pets are able to regulate their temperature accordingly. Outdoor coats are taken off and surgical vests are often ventilated. They can move properly and can do normal things like walking, grooming and toileting.]
