It’s that time of year again when everyone starts getting flooded with messages about getting a rabbit for Christmas.
Please don’t make an impulse holiday purchase.
Over 80% of rabbits bought from pet stores don’t even make it past their first birthday due to improper care, lack of research, or neglect. Every year after the holidays, we receive a surge of surrender applications because someone is allergic, the bunny is “too much work,” or the family simply didn’t realize how much responsibility a rabbit truly is.
If you’re genuinely considering adding a bunny to your family, please don’t do it because it’s Christmas. Rabbits are a 10+ year commitment, not a seasonal surprise.
This graphic shows a common pattern we see: a bunny gets lots of attention during that first “exciting” Christmas, six months later they’re often sitting alone in a cage with very little interaction, and by the next Christmas many are unfortunately illegally dumped outside because they don't want them anymore. Sadly, this happens far too often, and not just around the holidays.
*Please note: This is an older real example but the timeline is reversed. This rabbit was found dumped after the holidays, kept safe by the finder, and then adopted into a loving home after being in our rescue. He was not dumped again. This graphic is for educational purposes only.*
