Meet Liz. Liz has been a member of the Animates team since 2018. She originally started out in our support team and qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse last year. Liz also has a naughty tortie called T***s, pictured below.

Q1. Why did you become a Veterinary Nurse?

After spending 11 years working in an office environment I decided to pursue a life long dream to work with animals and become a veterinary nurse. I have always loved animals and decided that I wanted to devote my life to caring for people’s pets

Q2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

Building relationships with clients and their pets. I see some pets and their owners every month in nurse clinics and I love being able to spend time getting to know them. The pets are so pleased to see me and I know their owners trust that I will treat their pet like my own. Any day is always made better by kitten or puppy cuddles!

Q3. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary nurse?

Not being able to save every patient and knowing that sometimes putting in your everything just won’t be enough. It’s also a challenge to deal with difficult, worried or anxious patients because you can’t explain to them what you are doing and why to reassure them.

Q4. Summarise your job for someone interested in Veterinary nurisng?

Expect the unexpected and know that you will never know everything. Each day is varied and exciting. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, something will happen that will reignite your passion for the job.

Q5. What is your top tip to pet owners?

Get your pet used to coming to the vets and make it a positive experience. Whether that is coming to see the nurses for monthly clinics, sitting in the waiting room for a chat with our receptionists to get your pet used to the sounds and smells, or positively reassuring them when they are with us. We love nothing more than a happy patient who can’t wait to get in the door to say hello!

For Veterinary nurse awareness month we are doing some Q&As with our nursing team, including their number one tip to pet owners!
Today we have Claire. Claire has been a member of the Animates team since early 2023. Read her Q&As below.

Q1. Why did you become a Veterinary Nurse?

Since I was in year 10 at school I wanted to be a Veterinary nurse. I made my dream come true and can say that I have a job that I love.

Q2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love the excitement of every day being different and having a hand on job. My favourite aspect is theatre nursing.

Q3. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary nurse?

The most challenging part of the job is seeing animals come through the door suffering or in pain. We work alongside the Vets to try to get them back to full health, which can also be one of the best parts of the job.

Q4. Summarise your job for someone interested in Veterinary nurisng?

RVNs do a huge variety of day to day jobs, this can vary from Theatre nursing to kennel cleaning or covering reception. No one day is the same as the next and you are always learning something new, no matter how long you’ve been a nurse.

Q5. What is your top tip to pet owners?

Start from a young age training and socialising your pet, get them used to opening their mouths, having their feet, ears and tails checked. I would also consider looking into getting pet insurance.

Chloe is our most newly qualified Veterinary Nurse. Here she is with her handsome Ronnie.

Q1. Why did you become a Veterinary Nurse?

I have always wanted to work with animals since I was a kid, and after completing my animal care course in college I decided that I specifically wanted to be a Veterinary Nurse to care for sick animals and do whatever I can to assist in making them better.

Q2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

I overall enjoy every aspect of my job, some more challenging than others but all are rewarding in their own way. My favourite part is working in the hospital - I love taking care of the patients, bonding with them, being a part of their journey to recovery and just treating them like they’re all your own.

Q3. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary nurse?

I would say the most challenging is the emergency situations, not knowing when they will happen or how quickly they will come in. Being able to think fast and stay calm under pressure can be challenging but plays an important part of being a Veterinary Nurse.

Q4. Summarise your job for someone interested in Veterinary Nursing?

Requires a lot of hard work, teamwork, commitment, responsibility and emotional and physical strength - but it’s so rewarding and so worth it. I love my job.

Q5. What is your top tip to pet owners?

Do all possible research before getting any pet and really consider if you have plenty of time to care for them. And just simply love and care for your pet like it’s your own child

Have you got a cat over seven years old that could benefit from a blood pressure check?

It’s which is why we’re spreading the awareness of of how important it is to know the signs of high blood pressure in your cat 🐈

Quite often cats will show no noticeable signs of having a high blood pressure. Subtle changes in behaviors can be a crucial indicator that something isn’t quite right. Blood pressure checks are the best way to screen for feline hypertension.

Through the month of May we are offering free blood pressure checks for cats over the age of seven. Speak to a member of our reception team to book!

Veterinary Nurse awareness month continued.
Next we have Beth. Beth qualified as a Veterinary Nurse at the start of this year.

Q1. Why did you become a Veterinary Nurse?

Working with animals has always been my goal. I wanted a career that was more than just a job, something meaningful where I could make a positive impact on someone’s life.

Q2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

Every day at work is different from the next, which makes nursing a very exciting job. If I had to pick one aspect it would be Nursing consultations. They allow you to build a relationship with the pet and the client. You are able to see them progress in their individual journey, this can be very rewarding for everyone involved.

Q3. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary nurse?

The most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary Nurse has to be when a patient arrives in a critical condition and despite our best efforts they don’t make it. We work alongside the Veterinary surgeons to do everything we can to save a life, but unfortunately there are times when a patient doesn’t pull through. Following these situations it can be difficult not to take these emotions back home with you at the end of the day.

Q4. Summarise your job for someone interested in Veterinary nurisng?

As an RVN every day is different from the previous. We do a huge variety of roles, one day I might be scrubbing into surgery or monitoring anaesthetics, the next consulting and helping on dispensary. Every day consists of something different, making it a really exciting job.

Q5. What is your top tip to pet owners?

Get your pets used to having their feet, teeth and ears touched! These are often the parts that your pet will dislike being examined, getting them used to these areas being touched will help them be less stressed when they come into practice.

07/05/2024

For Veterinary Nurse awareness month we are doing a Q&A on each of our veterinary nurses. To kick start the month we have Becky, one of our senior nurses here at Animates.

Q1. Why did you become a Veterinary Nurse?

Before becoming an RVN I was a zoo keeper, a job I really enjoyed, however I wanted to understand more about the anatomy and physiology of different species. I also wanted to help care for sick animals and aid them back to health, so I decided to retrain as a veterinary nurse.

Q2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

Being an RVN involves many different roles, of which my favourites are monitoring patients under anaesthesia and caring for patients whilst in hospital. Working closely with patients and getting to know their personalities, their likes and dislikes is very rewarding especially when they make a full recovery and watch them return home to their owners.

Q3. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a Veterinary nurse?

Veterinary nursing can be a very challenging job with working long hours and unpredictable days, but bar far one of the most challenging parts of the job for me is emergency situations. Patients are often brought into practice with short or no notice in a critical condition and their lives are on the line. As an RVN our job involves helping the veterinary surgeons to save patients but sadly we can’t always save every patient and have to deliver this heartbreaking news to owners, which is one of the hardest parts of the job.

Q4. Summarise your job for someone interested in Veterinary Nursing?

It’s hard to summarise being an RVN as our job involves many different roles including receptionist, anaesthetist, cleaner, consulting nurse, taking and running blood samples, walking, feeding, administering medication and overall caring for patients and advising owners. The job involves multitasking on a daily basis and it can be an extremely challenging and high pressured but it is an extremely rewarding job and worth all the hard work and emotional strain.

Q5. What is your top tip to pet owners?

My top tip to pet owners is to research the type and breed of pet before you acquire your new family member. Pets are a big commitment so it is important to ensure you choose the correct one that will suit your family and life style.
