It’s still fairly rare to come across an adder 🐍 but this is the time of year they do start to wake up, so just try be aware in long grass and along hedge lines, forest paths & on heathland x 🐾

🐍 Adders 🐍

With the glorious weather recently, we have seen an expected increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

We can be so laser focused on another dog about to interact with ours that we forget to take into account their dog is only half of the picture we need to see....and we need to see it with clarity 👀
The person you have JUST met needs the same critiquing as their dog.
Potentially hazardous situations occur because we don't look as critically as we should at the handler.
Our dogs may have shown interest towards each other, but we need to lift our eyes off their dog... and follow that lead/leash up to critique the skills of the other person.
⚠️Do they have any verbal or even physical control over their dog?
⚠️Does their dog engage with them...at all ?
⚠️Have we observed how they handle other situations their dog finds themself in and is that acceptable to us?
⚠️Do they have a vastly different idea of good play than you do?
⚠️Does their dog listen to them at all?
⚠️Are they not recognising exactly what is occurring or are brushing it off from being ill informed or even embarrassment?

We need to take a little more time to assess the other persons capabilities before agreeing to those interactions....even if our dogs are showing great interest in meeting and playing.

Dogs need regular walks even in cold weather, but if there's snow or ice where you are, remember to wipe your pet's paws and belly afterwards - salt or grit can be toxic if ingested. Met Office

We're craving our Christmas dinner already, but which foods can you share with your dog? 🍗
Turns out, quite a lot! Do you treat your dog at Christmas? If so, just be confident that you're giving them safe snacks.

You can share ✅
Plain turkey and sausages, veggies like carrots, peas, parsnips and sweet potatoes.

Be sure to avoid ❌
Sweet treats with dried fruits like raisins such as Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Stollen. Steer clear of onions, blue cheese and stuffing - and of course, chocolate!
