Unlike humans, horses are designed to run on a full stomach. Feeding your horse 2-3L of chaff or a biscuit of hay prior to exercise has two benefits :
1️⃣ The chaff will form a ball of feed in the stomach, which will help prevent acid from splashing up from the lower part of the stomach to cause gastric ulcers.
2️⃣ Blood is normally diverted away from the stomach during exercise, which reduces some of its normal protective mechanisms. Research has shown that feeding your horse before exercise actually reduces the amount of blood that is shunted away from the stomach and also increases the amount of blood delivered to the skeletal muscles and muscles of the chest. So not only are you helping to protect the stomach, you also might be improving your horse’s performance.

With temperatures set to reach almost 40 degrees over the next few days, we wanted to share some tips to help keep your horse's as cool as possible.

☀️ Water!!
Ensure your horse has an ad-lib water supply available. Cool water is best, just not iced!
Cold hose your horse for at least 5 minutes as often as you can (and theres no need to scrape off!!)

☀️ Exercise!!
Horses should only be exercised during cooler times, so early in the morning or later in the evening, and only do so if you really have to.

☀️ Electrolytes!!
Adding electrolytes to a separate bucket of water or into feed can help replenish salts and minerals lost through excessive sweating.
Hanging a salt lick up means the horse can choose when they may need it.

☀️ Turnout or Stable??
If your horse has ample shade and there is a breeze outside then turnout isn't out of the question, but if there is limited or no shade then staying indoors is best. And don't forget if your horse is turned out apply sunscreen to the pink bits!!

If you are at all worried about your horses or need some advice please don't hesitate to contact us on 01344 937897.

Have a lovely, cool and safe weekend everyone 😀

Where has all the grass gone?...

“But there isn’t any grass on the field…” We hear these words a lot at this time of year, from the exasperated owners of fat horses fighting what sometimes seems like a losing battle with their horses’ weight.

Have you ever wondered why horses on a seemingly bare paddock can still gain weight?
It is worth keeping in mind, the picture of the un-grazed side of the field below. Of course, it can be very difficult for owners to monitor what a horse is taking in, but one thing is certain: when that side of the field is full of horses, it won’t look like this! That grass would be nipped off as soon as it poked up high enough to be nibbled!

Sarah Stoneham BVSc Cert ESM MRCVS gives this very good explanation of the problem which helps us to understand and monitor the amount of grass that the horse is consuming.

“UK grass growth figures (grass check GB) indicate that over the last week (ending 16.5.22), average grass growth in the north west has been high. At the moment a small well-managed paddock, the size of a 40x20m dressage arena will be producing an average of 22.5kg of grass per day. The dry matter content of grass is currently only 20% which means it is 80% water, so a 40x20m area produces 4.5 kg of grass on a dry matter basis each day.
This has a calorie content similar to 4.5 kg of a conditioning hard feed. The grass is also high in sugar, 17.1% on average last week. So, the 4.5 kg of grass on a dry matter basis will contain approximately 770g of sugar!
If your paddock is still looking as bare as it did earlier this year it is because your horse has eaten all the new grass each day.”

So, where has all the grass gone?... its inside the horse!
