The most gorgeous Vizsla Mia for her first ever treadmill session to build muscle and stability after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia 🌸🩷

Hip dysplasia is one of our most commonly referred conditions as hydrotherapy and physiotherapy is extremely beneficial in managing this condition, building muscle and stability around the hips, and reducing compensatory muscle tension. The controlled environment also helps to encourage optimal movement 💦

Our littlest legs in the treadmill 🥹🫶🏼The sweetest little Rue, is 3 year old papillon. She had patella surgery back in February, and then had revision surgery in June this year, she recovered well and has already had some treadmill experience at Fitzpatricks at the time of the surgery. She is now attending for maintenance hydrotherapy with us in the treadmill to maintain hindlimb muscle strength and stifle range of motion to continue to support her patellas and reduce any stiffness. Swipe to see her in action 🐾🐕💦(Note: the video was filmed in the mirror, so it shows the limbs the opposite way 🫣)

❔Did you know that arthritis can occur in dogs from the age of 2 years old and it affects 80% of those over the age of 8 ❔

🐕 Arthritis is a chronic, meaning long term inflammatory joint disease affecting all joints. Those with developmental disease such as hip and elbow dysplasia, those post surgery such as cruciate surgery, patella luxation or arthroscopies are at more risk of developing arthritis.

🐕 The condition results in inflammation, thickening of the soft tissues surrounding the joint, loss of mobility and sadly pain and discomfort.

🐕 Muscles surrounding the joint can also weaken and become sore and tight in an attempt to compensate for the joint pain leading to further discomfort.
If left unmanaged the pain signals coming from the joint is magnified and a small amount of pain can start to feel like a lot of pain.

Early signs you may see in your dog if you suspect arthritis include, but are not limited to:
🦴 Stiffness or limping after rest
🦴 Hesitation to jump in / out the car or on / off furniture
🦴 Licking over joints
🦴 Lameness
🦴 Changes in behaviour such as becoming lethargic, taking a dislike to being touched over certain areas, not enjoying activities they used to enjoy, and slowing down on walks

💦 Hydrotherapy (swimming) and Physiotherapy that we can offer here at Therapaws can be a part of a multi-modal approach to manage the condition to slow down progression, improve comfort levels and reduce pain alongside veterinary treatment such as pain medication, home management and weight loss.

Benefits of swimming
🐾 Low impact non-weight bearing exercise to reduce pressure on joints
🐾Resistance of the water allows them to build the supportive musculature surrounding the joint
🐾 Maintain joint mobility
🐾 The warm water reduces pain and relaxes tight muscles
🐾 Improve cardiovascular fitness and stamina
🐾 Assist with weight loss

Benefits of Physiotherapy
🐶 Reduces muscle tension
🐶 Reduce pain
🐶 Anti-inflammatory
🐶 The use of massage, laser therapy and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy
🐶 Remedial land based exercises to maintain joint range of motion, flexibility and balance/stability

This is Bella 💕

Bella was referred to us for chronic iliopsoas discomfort after falling awkwardly when jumping up for a ball on the beach back in June 23 🎾🏖️

The hindlimb lameness was intermittent but ongoing and so she started an intensive physiotherapy programme with us in October 2023 2 x a week, consisting of laser therapy and then when she was ready, she started gentle targeted iliopsoas activation and strengthening exercises.

In December 2023 she started in the underwater treadmill to continue with muscle strengthening. She has been attending weekly, and more recently every 2/3 weeks 💦🐕

We are pleased that the combination of physiotherapy and underwater treadmill has helped improve comfort, promote healthy tissue regeneration and muscle fibre quality, and strengthen her iliopsoas as we are happy to say that we have seen no lameness in the last 4-5 months and she is back to normal exercise and activities 🐕🐾

Bella has reached her 20th session with us and we are incredibly pleased with the progress she has made within this time ❤️

Limping is a significant gait change that means something is wrong. The cause of the limp might be up for debate, but it will be linked to pain or discomfort.

It's safer and more beneficial for your dog to assume the presence of pain rather than the absence of pain.

Barkley the Staffie X Rhodesian Ridgeback 🩵

‘Barkley has had a rough few years, diagnosed with elbow dysplasia in 2018 and a partial rupture of his cruciate in 2022. Following successful TPLO surgery Barkley was again referred to Therapaws for hydrotherapy to improve his mobility and address significant muscle wastage (he now has two strong back legs). The team have been fantastic and so patient and caring with Barkley’s ‘Frank Spencer’ complex’ - Suzanne (Owner)

Barkley enjoys his hydrotherapy sessions that he has every week and always has a smile and lick to give 🫧🩵

If your canine companion has recently had a surgery or injury and you would like to bring them for some post operative rehabilitation and muscle strengthening then please contact us:

Custard the Golden Retriever 🩵

“Custard, a typical golden retriever packed on a few extra pounds after being neutered and well frankly just being a Retriever. We tried everything to get the weight off but nothing was working. We signed up for weight loss swim and wow did he love it! We immediately booked a block of 10 sessions and have continued from there. Found swimmies is the highlight of his week. He adores Amelia and the team and his favourite water toy ‘Ducky’ is also available for every swim. Added bonus - he has lost a massive 3kg in a few months. Each week, we love seeing his fitness level improve as it will keep him healthy in his old age and will help protect his plankings against the dreaded arthritis so many Retrievers selves as they age.

Plus the sight of your dog swimming around happily whilst wearing a swimming hat is bound to put a smile on your face. Thanks to everyone at Therapaws for loving and helping Custard on his weight-loss journey. “

Kathy and Custard xx
