A 10km Temporary Control Zone has been put in place to minimise spread of disease and while we undertake further investigations to determine if there has been any local spread.

The recent high temperatures pose a significant risk of heat stress in animals ☀️🌡️

Signs of heat stress for cattle might include less activity than usual, lowered heads, panting, and a rapid respiratory rate. It's crucial to ensure they have access to ample shade and water.

In addition, consider measures like misting your cattle with water or using fans to help them beat the heat on these scorching days.

Stay cool out there! ❄️

We are seeing a number of grass staggers cases at the moment. This is a combination of the lush grass growth recently being low in magnesium and magnesium being lost in the milk for example those in early lactation/calved beef and dairy cattle.
Low levels of magnesium often result in down cows with neurological symptoms and require urgent veterinary attention.
For every clinical case there will be a number more who are at risk and therefore consider supplementing cows at this time of year. There are various ways to do this from boluses to magnesium salts in water and addition to concentrate feed so talk to your vet to way up the best options for your farm.

As a practice, we believe herd health planning is the cornerstone of the vet-farmer relationship.

That's why we compile and assist our farmers with data collection on regular routine visits, and provide reports and analysis. This data is then used to inform management decisions, highlight production losses and provide cost-effective solutions.

Our in-house mastitis culturing allows us to give you next day results on the bugs affecting your cows. It provides a rapid response to tailor the treatment plan appropriately and also potentially reduces the antibiotics used in cases where they aren’t required.

Here’s a snapshot of how it’s performed ⬇️

There are a few ways of giving fluids to a dehydrated cow.

It depends on how unwell the cow is, how dehydrated, and whether her rumen is turning over normally.

Even a mild to moderately dehydrated cow is deficient in a lot of fluid. For example, a 600kg cow who is 10% dehydrated (eg. skin tenting, sunken eyes) this means their fluid deficit is 60 L - that’s a lot of fluid!

Often oral fluids will suffice but in some cases, the cow's cardiovascular system is compromised with reduced/no rumen turn over meaning they will have a hard job absorbing the fluids given.

In these cases, we opt for intravenous fluids alongside oral fluids. 🪣

While at a TB test, Georgi was asked for advice about cattle with itchy skin 🐮

When one of the worst affected was presented for testing, a small patch at the shoulder was also clipped and a blade was used to scrape a small area of skin.

This was then viewed under a microscope to see which parasites were present and an infestation of lice was found!🪳 A treatment plan was made and Spotinor was delivered in time for day 2 of the test.

Having your vet perform your TB test means we can chat about the general health of your herd and any issues raised can be tackled quickly ✅🐮

We now have three vets who are ROMS-accredited mobility scorers 📝

Many of our farms have a quarterly herd mobility score carried out by us. This helps identify those cows that are lame requiring treatment and allows us to work closely with you to identify lameness problems on a regular basis.

This month DEFRA announced the rollout of a funded annual health and welfare review which works in addition to your routine herd health visit.

The aim is to discuss animal health and welfare on your farm and carry out diagnostic testing: focussing on BVD in cattle, and worming treatments in sheep alongside a discussion of medicine use and biosecurity.
