*CALLING OWNERS OF DOGS WITH BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS AND PROFESSIONAL DOG BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION PROFESSIONALS IN THE UK*

Are you a dog owner, or a dog behaviour professional?

Have you sought advice in the UK for a behaviour issue with your dog within the last two years?

OR

Have you provided professional advice in the UK for a behaviour issue with a dog within the last two years?

If so, researchers at the University of Edinburgh are seeking your assistance in a vital research project. We invite you to partake in a brief online survey regarding your experience with the behaviour consultation process and your experience of the communication process throughout the behaviour modification process.

Your participation in this study would be immensely valued, as it contributes to our understanding of best practices from the perspective of dog owners. The study has obtained ethical approval, and your involvement is entirely voluntary, confidential, and anonymous.

The reliability of our results depends on the number of participants, so we encourage you to please SHARE THIS POST if you would be happy to support us in this way. Thank you very much in advance. For additional information and to participate in the survey, please follow this link:

Changes in behaviour, refusal to walk on slippery floors, reluctance to jump in the car and maybe not wanting to walk like they used to... deliberate disobedience or perhaps something else?

If your dog has changed behaviour, maybe they have stopped wanting to do something they have always enjoyed, or maybe they arent quite their normal happy self? It is a good time to ask why they are behaving this way and seek further help. Dogs cant tell us when they are uncomfortable, we have to look for the signs! Our dogs arent being deliberatley difficult, they need our support.

Learn to look beyond the behaviour and always ask why!

Please share and hopefully we can help educate more dog owners and help even more dogs!

A simple guide to toilet training your puppy. There is never any reason to reprimand or use any other punishments for accidents in the home because this is YOUR job to take them out and give them every opportunity to succeed. The more consistent you are, the quicker your pup will pick it up. But do not fall into the trap of thinking your dog is toilet trained if you have had a few days with no accidents, they are still learning and it can take many months for a dog to be reliably house trained and this is likely to go out of the window when they are taken to a different house for a visit or daycare. You’ve got this 👍👍

So so so chuffed with this darling girl for making it to a full FIVE MINUTES in our Separation Anxiety reassessment today. It may not seem like a lot but for a dog who previously couldn’t handle her family being a foot away from her it is so wonderful to see her snoozing away peacefully while her family is actually out of the house! It’s all about consistency so a big well done to the family for putting in the time and effort 💪🏻

"We came to Hal to help us with our noise reactive rescue dog Norman. She gave us some great tips and tricks on how to calm him down and how to keep him less stressed, helping not only us but him too.

If you’re adding a new dog to your family be sure to pick up some enzymatic cleaner for any accidents. Even adult dogs who are advertised as house trained often have a few accidents when settling into a new environment, simply because they don’t know it’s their home yet! The Simple Solutions enzyme cleaner breaks down the urate crystals in dog urine, preventing dogs from being attracted back to the same spot over and over again. Most household cleaners contain ammonia and this can actually make housetraining even harder so save yourself a lot of headache and get the right products from the get go!

Like most things in the dog world, caring for your dogs teeth is about prevention rather than a cure! Keeping those teeth nice and clean will also help to reduce surprisingly expensive veterinary bills down the line if any teeth need to be pulled.

My darling girl had to be put to sleep last week. She fought a valiant fight against cancer but eventually this meant that her organs were no longer functioning as they should and her swollen lymphnodes would soon prevent her from being able to breathe. If anyone is struggling with a similar journey please feel free to reach out to me and I will help as best I can.

My Lacey taught me more than I could ever imagine about dogs and dog training and I will forever be grateful that her sensitive soul showed me the way to positive reinforcement training and the art of clicker training. I will continue to share her videos on here so that she can continue to help others to learn a little more about what it means to be a dog guardian.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to her treatment and to everyone who chose online training over these past two months, allowing me to enjoy some very special time with her in the Brecon Beacons. It really has meant the world to me.

So what is puppy training?

21/03/2021

It is easy for us to get caught up in ball throwing for dogs, but we do need to understand what is happening for them too.
As some people know, I do stop all ball play where I can. Particularly in dogs who have learnt through ball play/chase games to have a high chase drive, higher adrenaline and then lose the ability to think clearly.....then of course they lose the ability to have recall, engage calmly with other dogs etc.
So scentwork, good socialising and other forms of mental stimulation are definitely such a positive area to focus development on.
In case you can't see the graphic on the post, this is from the brilliant organisation Canine Arthritis Management who do wonderful work to bring awareness to this important subject.

Throwback to some pre-lockdown training with the gorgeous Leo! .eat.sleep.retrieve 🥰 45kg of Golden, Leo’s mum was unable to walk him with him pulling her around everywhere. They had tried the start/stop method to no success and had bought a Halti but that was quickly returned after seeing the stress it caused Leo. They were starting to feel like they’d tried everything but Leo quickly picked up our positive training methods and was walking like a champ before our hour session was through! I really miss being able to fuss all the cute doggies in lockdown but if your dog is pulling like a menace, don’t worry, this skill can be taught easily over Zoom!

Another fantastic zoom session last night with dog siblings Moxi and new puppy Suki.

I’m so pleased with this family’s progress working on appropriate interactions between the two dogs. I especially loved how while we were getting set up, the owners put out a mat and while their backs were turned Suki took herself straight over to it and settled herself (third picture).

We had a brilliant session discussing canine body language and appropriate play and how to manage these interactions so that they can have more time together!

Your dog's nose is amazing! While most guardians focus on moving a dog's legs, the most important feature to be exercising is a dog's nose.

Here are 5 facts about the canine olfactory system.

1️⃣ Like a snake, your dog has a vomeronasal organ (or Jacobson organ). This organ consists of a patch of sensory cells found in nasal cavity above the roof of the mouth and detects pheromones. If you have ever seen a dog chatter their jaw after smelling they are pushing a scent into this area to intensify their ability to "read" it. It may look strange, but it's a super good smell!

2️⃣ While you might smell dinner cooking your dog can smell each ingredient that was used down to every individual spice or seasoning.

3️⃣ Dogs can use their nostrils independently. For non-threatening scents they will use their right before switch to using their left nostril, however they will continue to use the right when sniffing things they consider a threat.

4️⃣ Engaging in nosework activities increases a dog's positive outlook through providing freedom of choice and the ability to engage in natural behaviours. Find the study here:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0168159118304325

5️⃣ The dog's nose can sense weak heat sources from around 1.5 metres away. This feature is thought to have helped primitive dogs and wolves hunt successfully. It may also be why your dog notices that rabbit before you do!

The dog nose is incredible so next time your dog has an opportunity to - let them sniff! Where they want and as long as they want.
