Yew Tree Farm - Bristol's Last Working Farm

Yew Tree Farm - Bristol's Last Working Farm Situated in South Bristol, Yew Tree Farm is the last working farm within the city. Hi,
I’m Catherine and I have lived at Yew Tree Farm all my life.
(22)

We have farmed traditionally and some would say in an old fashioned way for three generations. This has resulted in us having a wonderful natural hay meadow with over 90 plant and grass species which not only feeds the animals in winter but sustains hundreds of insect and bird species as well. We had ground nesting sky larks move in this summer so we delayed cutting the hay until after they had fi

nished their 3rd breeding cycle, which our wildlife friendly approach to farming enabled. There are hundreds (hopefully more) of mature trees, copses, woodland and the most wonderful hedgerows; all inside Bristol’s city boundary which makes Yew Tree Farm unique. The landscape we have is ‘re-wilded’ and regenerative which is vital for wildlife to thrive. We have cattle that graze this species rich pasture and work symbiotically with the flora and fauna. To say living here excites me is an understatement, it is such a wonderfully rich environment and the contrasting backdrop of a big city is amazing. Following a recent visit from Tim Curley, Avon Wildlife’s Living Landscape Manager he commented;
‘’ Local food production is hugely important and the low intensity farming that your family has practised is a great example of what is possible for those interested in the relationship between farming and wildlife’’
Dr Helena Crouch, Naturalist who undertook a meadow survey wrote-
‘’The meadow supports a huge number of insects and is incredibly important for pollinators.. there really were clouds of butterflies using your meadow all the time and the sounds of grasshoppers’’
Traditional, nature friendly and low intensity farming along with a strong local approach from farm to fork will help save the planet. We are hoping fellow Bristolians will support us so we can be a part of the city for at least another 3 generations.

More traffic around Long Ashton? The Council’s Place Directorate confirms that EPIC’s working pattern will add to rush hour traffic on the A38 and A370, and lead to more cars using Yanley Lane, Barrow Lane & Wild Country Lane as rat runs. They also have “concerns with traffic potentially queuing out of the site”.

Not what you want? Please object to EPIC’s proposals. Even if you’ve objected already, you can do so again: https://planning.n-somerset.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=S29EEHLP00G00

Hi,
Many of you will not realise what could be about to happen along the link road just on North Somerset side. On left after the railway as you drive towards Long Ashton.
A huge unnecessary office complex theme park, proposed by a huge USA company who are fleecing our NHS.
Despite Bristol having vast empty or under-utilised HQ’s think Pavillions ir Lloyds building they want to build over our precious greenbelt, which also serves as a flood plain.
Please spare a minute to email the North Somerset councillors on the committee to show your support for our much loved greenbelt.

🚨URGENT - PLEASE EMAIL PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBERS 🚨

Despite 94% of comments on EPIC’s proposed office park being objections, we’re concerned North Somerset Council’s planning committee may give this huge development on precious Green Belt land the go-ahead.

The committee members need to see the strength of feeling against EPIC’s development before they make their decision next month so please EMAIL THEM NOW! Their addresses are at the bottom of this post - keep it polite and constructive.

We’ve written some guidance on what you could focus on in your emails: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w5uCqZgkkbapBdQJd6FFya8gAd-i1TIp5cSCJrfT4-4/

🚨 Yew Tree Farm used to be one of 28 farms in South Bristol, but today it remains as the last working farm in the whole of the city and it is now under threat due to the proposed expansion of South Bristol Cemetery onto the farm.

As a SNCI (Site of Nature Consideration Interest) and with the recent discovery of an insect on the farm previously unknown to science, Yew Tree Farm is a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with nature and wildlife, and for locals, the farm provides much-needed green space.

The Sustainable Food Trust has been working closely with Catherine Withers at Yew Tree Farm for the past two years to deliver an on-farm green social prescribing project – the first of its kind, with an incredibly positive response from those involved.

🗣️ “The importance of Yew Tree Farm to the city of Bristol should not be underestimated. It offers immense benefits to the local community – enhancing and restoring biodiversity, mitigating flood risk, sequestering carbon, offering climate resilience, providing nutrient-dense and healthy food, and green space for public footpath users and community groups. To see the farm now under threat is incredibly concerning.” – Bonnie Welch, SFT Head of Projects.
