Following the tragic news of a 10 year old boy being fatally injured by a ‘pitbull type’ dog, let’s take a look at how we can keep children safe around dogs.
Firstly, a pitbull type is not inherently a dangerous dog. However, they are large and muscular and consequently pose a risk of far greater injury if they bite than say, a poodle - as with any large, powerful breed of dog. Whilst fatal dog injuries are extremely rare, there have been cases in the last few years by a Jack Russell terrier, Lakeland terrier, chow chow, Doberman, Malamute, and German shepherds as well as various different bull breeds. The pitbull is one of 4 illegal breeds under Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) that was implemented under the Dangerous Dogs Act 30 years ago - in that time fatalities have doubled, dog bite injuries have increased disproportionately compared with the number of dogs in the UK population (and bites are caused by all breeds and crossbreeds), and status dogs still exist. So we know that BSL isn’t working. There are far too many confounding variables at play than simply putting these incidents down to breed - and where would we draw the line?
Secondly, whilst dogs can be ‘man’s best friend’ we should always remember that they are a predator with very sharp teeth! There is no breed that is good with children. I recommend that ALL dogs are perceived as the equivalent of a loaded gun in terms of child safety, regardless of breed or temperament. If you wouldn’t leave your child unsupervised with a loaded gun, don’t do it with a dog. If you’d not let your child grab a loaded gun, don’t let them do it to a dog. If you’d check if someone else’s gun was loaded before letting your child touch it, ask before letting your child touch someone else’s dog. You get the gist. Make sure appropriate management strategies are in place to prevent any risk of the child getting access to the equivalent of the loaded gun.
Thirdly, learn to understand dog body language & communication (check out my webinar on this if you want to learn more! Just ÂŁ20: https://www.pet-sense.co.uk/product/canine-body-language-and-communication/) - there are numerous signs dogs will use to communicate before they escalate to biting which should be recognised by all dog owners.
Fourthly, if you need to rehome your dog, or want to rehome a dog, please do so through a reputable rescue.

Ok there are 5 dogs here, & hypothetically 2 pairs of them could be the parents of 2 of the dogs because of their breeds. The dogs are (going from left to right) Queenie, Axl, Goose, Ned & Bailey. Who are the Mums & Dads of whom?

Good idea to check.

Petlog has recently upgraded their website and as a result, some customers have been unable to log into their accounts to check their companion animals' microchip details. The company advises creating a new account, but there is no need to re-register pets.

My lovely husband told me that sadly there was a dead fox in our garden & he needed help to remove it. Very upset, I followed him into the garden. This is what I have to put up with. 🧐

This is a real problem that is happening in Bristol right now. Please be aware & keep your dogs safe.

We are sharing the below message to dog owners from our Neighbourhood Watch colleagues:

Vet practices are experiencing a significant rise in the number of puppies being registered with them since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic and during the current lockdown.

The demand for new puppies has been such that the purchase prices have risen steeply and at the same time thefts of dogs and puppies has also increased.

The theft of a pet can be devastating and very upsetting for families so if you own a dog please consider taking some or all of the following precautions:

• Make sure you have your dog's microchip details readily available.
• Take an up-to-date photograph of your dog making sure to include any unique markings or features and keep it safe. Update it often as the puppy grows. If your dog is stolen the police will find this really useful
• You should have your contact details attached to the dogs collar
• When arriving at the vets check for vehicles in the car park or nearby where the occupants appear to be looking at visitors to the vets. Bring this to the attention of the staff and remember registration numbers if possible
• Always control your pet when leaving and be aware of your surroundings on your journey home
• When you get home make sure your dog is safe and if left on their own in a garden make sure they cannot escape and a thief cannot walk in to take the dog.
• Take precautions when out walking, have your mobile phone handy, don't let your dog stray too far away and call it back if you see people acting suspiciously or if they ask a lot of questions about your dog
• Don’t leave them alone tied up outside shops
• Should the worst happen and your dog is stolen report it straight away and social media is useful to spread information quickly and may help quick recovery of the dog.

Dog theft is real and causes panic, fear and heartache, protect your dog as they would protect yourself.

This proactive warning links in with Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl’s Police and Crime Plan priority of “A green and pleasant county” as well as "a compassionate approach" and anyone who wishes to report information related to this can do so via the following link or calling 101: https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/soh/seen-or-heard/
