Today's Piratedog crew - Another busy day today, it was a little chilly so we did lots of running around to warm up and exercise is a fantastic way to boost serotonin and endorphin production in your dog.

A dog’s nose print is unique to each individual dog. A new study shows that a dog's nose print is well-established by 2 months of age and is unchanging over time. The exterior surface of a dog’s nose, known as the rhinarium, is covered in a textured pattern of ridges and bumps. These patterns are as intricate and varied as human fingerprints. Just like human fingerprints, no two dogs have the same nose print. This uniqueness makes nose prints a potential tool for identification, much like how fingerprints are used in forensic science. The Canadian Kennel Club has been accepting dog nose prints as proof of identity since 1938. A South Korean company has developed a biometric recognition tool that allows dogs to be identified by their nose prints, which could soon be used instead of microchips.

The latest recruit to the Pirate Dog crew, Jasper was a bundle of joy and we had lots of fun on our first walk together. After the initial meet and greet the first walk is a get to know each other walk and I like to make sure it is all fun and games so the dog can't wait for our next walk. I can then start with some training on the second walk.

Interesting facts about dogs - The worldwide dog population is estimated to be 900 million, with 75-85% being free ranging dogs. The UK dog population is 13.5 million an increase of 1.5 millon from last year. Approximately 33% of UK households own a dog, making them the most popular pet.
In a recent survey, most dog owners cited their reasons for owning a dog as improving their happiness or providing companionship. London is the only area of the UK where cats are more popular than dogs.

The Boxer – high energy, playful, affectionate. Originally developed in Germany in the 1800s it is a descendant of the Bullenbeisser (meaning bull biter), a German breed used to hunt bear, boar and deer.
Boxers are great family dogs, they are good with children and very affectionate with their owners but require plenty of exercise and attention. They retain an almost puppy-like attitude for much of their life. Life is never boring with a Boxer around.

Do you know what your dog is telling you when he barks?
Understanding what your dog is telling you when it barks is all in the pitch, frequency, duration and body language. The lower the pitch the more serious the reason, a dog in play will have a higher pitch than a dog warning you of an immediate threat. Frequency and duration, barks that are repeated at a fast rate for a longer period indicate a higher level of urgency and excitement but if your dog only gives one or two quick barks it is only showing a mild interest and doesn’t feel there is any threat.
A bark indicating a possible threat will be a series of rapid 2 to 4 mid pitched barks with a slight pause between them which will continue whilst the threat is in sight. This is the classic general alarm bark. If the pitch gets lower the threat is getting closer.
An attention seeking bark will be a high pitched bark that initially starts with one or two barks, if successful the dog will continue to use this bark to get attention, it will become a persistent bark if the dog does not get the attention it is after.
