Hi just wanted to let you folks know a bit about Delightful Doggy Training. We offer something a bit different to other available training solutions. We like to start by using a method called the Dog Calming Code, we help the humans to communicate with the dog in a gentle way so that they understand that the humans will be providing for all their needs and protecting them, as a Parent would a c

hild. This means that the dog can relax and just concentrate on being a dog. Knowing that they don't have responsibility of 'being in charge' takes all the pressure off boisterous, anxious and even aggressive dogs. Once this important Foundation is in place, it is much easier for the dog to learn new skills - that's the training bit, which we do after the Foundation work has been done. Yes we teach the humans how to do this and it's not complicated and doesn't take up any more of your time in your daily life. However, part of owning a dog is to keep up the daily training, practising things they already know and teaching them new things too. It's what makes your and their life interesting and deepens the bond between you, so we teach this too!

If you have a young dog or bitch and being advised to neuter, do listen to this podcast first, so that you are fully informed of the pros and cons. You will be amazed how many health issues are linked with early neutering!
Nb In countries like Norway it is illegal to neuter unless there is a medical issue, and in many Scandinavian countries it is normal to leave unneutered and yet they havent got problems of Strays, as we have in UK and US

I was very disappointed, that the last regular worm test for my 3yr old showed he had moderate hook worm 😱 I opted to try the natural remedy of Grapefruit Seed Extract, costing around £7. Just drops on the food for 10 days, wait 2 weeks, and test again. To be honest I was a little sceptical that it would work.
What a lovely surprise to have the re-test results back today, showing he is clear.😃 I'll certainly always try this natural remedy first, in future.

Once you get through the puppy stage, you may think you're through the worst, but nooooo, next there is the teenage stage, when their behaviour starts to go backwards. What's that all about?
This article gives you a background of what's happening

ADOLESCENCE:
As dogs go through adolescence, it’s safe to say things turn a little topsy-turvy! 🙃

If you’re currently at this stage and feeling like you’ve taken one step forward and two steps back, don’t panic! During this stage of life, there’s a lot going on in their busy little brains.

Here are three facts about the adolescent brain 🧠👇

1. The inhibitory neurons of the amygdala that help to dampen down emotional responses don’t fully mature until the END of adolescence.

2. Communication between the frontal cortex and amygdala, which is essential for skills training, decreases during adolescence.

3. Extinction memory is impaired during adolescence, so if your dog has a bad experience it’s much more likely to lead to a ‘hard wired’ fear memory.

Have patience and compassion as you support and guide your dog through this vulnerable period of brain development.

We've reported in other posts how important it is to time a spaying procedure, to the time after the season, when prolactin hormone production is 'switched off' or your bitch might remain in a phantom pregnancy state with accompanying behaviour changes.
Here is a method to check, though do still be wary of behaviour change, as well as subtle milk production

Im always recommending this site as a great resource for finding the best ways to help our older dogs avoid pain, stiffness etc. However, it is essential for their wellbeing, that dogs of ALL ages get lots of opportunities to sleep undisturbed in the day, as well as at night

Probably the majority of pet owners, have been encouraged to sign up for routine monthly flea and worm treatments from our vets. This article highlights the disturbing side effects using these products can have, to us, our pets, and the environment.

As we're not so far away from Christmas. Spare a thought for your dog's waistline. This article, helps you review if you're dog is overweight or not, and the benefits of keeping your dogs a healthy weight.

Dog obesity can reduce a dog's life by up to two years with massively increased incidence of heart disease and diabetes. Overweight dogs are also much more likely to suffer from joint problems, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties. This not only affects the pets but also has repercussions....

Are you on a schedule to medicate your dog every month of his/ her life, with flea and worm treatments? Did you know there are other options? How about testing your dog to see if they have worms, find out what type, and medicate accordingly?
My dog hasn't had preventive worm medication for over a year, and this is the result of his latest test. I will be checking him again, to make sure he has not got lungworm, but no medication is currently required.
I used Feclab, but there are many similar companies offering this.

Once you have trained a robust nose touch, you can use it to help your dog disengage from something that he finds very exciting or scary. This young dog got very excited when seeing sheep, so over many months, he has been taught to look at them and then disengage. Important - we started with a lot more distance and gradually decreased the distance as he was able to cope. He was not allowed to stress the sheep.

Teaching a' 'touch' cue is a great tool to help your dog disengage from things that are too exciting or too scary, and bring their energy levels down.
Start with just teaching them to hold the touch for a longer and longer duration and then you can start to add in distractions to make sure that it is rock solid.
It is important that you have your dog enough distance away from the trigger, for this to work. I'll load another video shortly, to show this in action with the example of seeing sheep.

This morning, it was brought home to me, how vital it is for your dog's safety, that you teach your dog, from puppy hood, a very strong reliable, LEAVE IT command.
I was doing a cliff walk this morning and was near a viewing point at Boscastle. I hadn't spotted a young adder curled up on the path, but my dog had! His nose was just inches away. Fortunately a strong LEAVE IT command and he backed off, phew!
It slithered off into undergrowth before I could get my own photo. The one I saw was very young, only about a foot long and curled up into roughly a 4-5 inch diameter, so not very easy to spot.
If you're walking your dogs in areas where there are likely to be snakes, keep them on the path and in your sight. Don't allow them to rummage around in the undergrowth.

It thought it was good going when one of my dogs reached 16 years! There have been others that have been close to this age too! Notice this one's not been fed on highly processed kibble, as also the case with the other long life dogs.

Part of the great communication skill-set of dogs and their connection with us humans, is their ability to understand the significance of a pointing gesture. It is the direction of the finger they focus on, not the finger itself. Elephants are naturals at this too, but stangely chimps 'dont get it' . This dog might seem to be comically foolish, but he is demonstrating that he understands where the ball should go, if the golf swing is in a certain direction. So actually a very smart dog!

Taking your dog away on holiday? Be sure to check them and humans for ticks, especially if you've been walking through long grass in a sheep or deer area. They're already very active. My dog has picked up 5 this year so far, on the times Ive forgotten to put essential oil tick repellent on him!
Discovered this tool is really good for getting them out of a very wriggly dog!

This clever little credit-card sized device is perfectly designed to remove ticks quickly and easily. The Smidge Quick Untick Card has two different-sized notches for both small and large ticks. It also incorporates a magnifying glass to help inspect the tick. The safe and quick removal of a tick re...
