Chips — The most decorated dog of the Second World War, Chips was donated to the U.S. Army by the Wren family of Pleasantville, New York shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The part German Shepherd, Collie and Husky mix served in North Africa and Europe. During the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, Chips stormed an Italian machine gun nest, forcing four of the enemy troops out into the open to be captured. During the brief melee, the animal was wounded in the head and suffered minor burns as well. Later that same day, Chips participated in the capture of another 10 enemy troops. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star for his bravery as well as the Purple Heart, although these were all subsequently revoked due to a military regulation preventing medals from being given to non-humans. [7] He eventually returned home to the Wrens after the war.

Hello everyone.

My name is Miranda Delnevo and I own dog training company Bonus Canine where my main focus is the promotion of owners “doing stuff” with their dogs. Ie: my passion is competing and teaching dog sport to as many “types” of dogs and people as possible.

I currently run sessions in mantrailing as a qualified Mantrailing Instructor (Mantrailing Global qualified); the UK’s fastest growing dog sport. Mantrailing has been adapted for pet dogs from operational search and rescue and police dog trailing. It really is the sport for every dog with all temperaments, ages, breeds etc.

I also offer:
• Bespoke 1-2-1
• Competitive Obedience
• Relationship & Engagement sessions.
• Real-world structured training walks.
• Personal Protection and foundation Dog sport protection training.

To find out more:
Check out the pinned post on my page Bonus Canine for a detailed list of my qualifications and experience.

Based in Buntingford (East Herts) and Royston (North Herts).

Yup!Kudos to my training clients and all of the work you’ve put into your furry family friend 👊🏻🐾

Sooner or later all the health and function issues I will be addressing and hopefully publishing it in a book. This post is not showing a fault, though it’s connected and only scratching the surface. Im sure a lot will know where I’m coming from.

EVER noticed those slits at the sides of a dog’s nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature( evolution )proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale. Any alternating of this, is affecting the Dogs naturally ability that evolution has improved on over years. It’s very important that when breed dogs, we work with evolution and not against. They should be fully functional and healthy, as there ancestors.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog’s nostrils doesn’t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let’s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

Can anyone recommend local wooded area open to public? I’m desperately seeking this type of terrain for my next mantrailing session and am having zero luck! Parking for 4-6 cars as well.

Anyone? 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Random reinforcement is one of the most effective ways I find of teaching, proofing and maintaining behaviours.

Seen here is an example of random recall reinforcement. I chose to do this when two dogs were in the midst of chase play to test their abilities to stop and return to me. Demonstrating their relationship with me as they choose to stop a highly enjoyable game.

I also use my “release cue” which means they are free to roam from me.
