Tis the season to be careful with our furry friends 🐾⛄️

🚫CHRISTMAS TREE WARNING 🚫

🌲PINE NEEDLES🌲
Although needles from trees such as fir, pine, and spruce are thankfully non-toxic to dogs, they can get embedded in paws and cause mouth irritations. If too many needles are ingested then your dog may end up suffering a nasty stomach upset. With this in mind, think about opting for a fake tree or investing in a protective barricade to prevent your dog from being harmed.

⛄️ ARTIFICIAL SNOW ⛄️
Have you got a snow-covered artificial tree? Unfortunately, artificial snow can contain ingredients that could be toxic to pets and should really be avoided at all costs in favour of ones with snowless branches if you have a curious dog who likes to inspect the tree.

🍫 CHOCOLATE 🍫
You do need to be a bit more careful if you use chocolate decorations especially if you’ve got a pet that will try to sneak one, as dogs should never be allowed chocolate. It is advised to hang any edible decorations right up at the top of your tree, where even the most mischievous of pets can’t reach them.

🌿NATURAL DECORATIONS🌿
Pet owners should be aware that certain festive plants and natural decorations could be harmful to your pet. Be careful with certain festive plants – poinsettia, holly, mistletoe, and ivy can cause varying degrees of stomach upset if eaten by a curious dog.

🎁EDIBLE GIFTS🎁
It is wise to avoid leaving anything edible under your tree, even if it is wrapped. Dogs may rummage through the gifts looking for anything they can eat. Most commonly chocolate gifts which could prove fatal, but also any food gifts could be found by your dog and consumed, so be extra careful this year and keep them out of reach from your curious pets.

🎄SMASHED DECORATIONS🎄
As pretty as glass baubles may be, they can be very dangerous indeed for your dog if they end up smashing. Cuts to the mouth and paws could be very serious, while ingesting broken pieces could even result in lacerations to the throat or internal organs.

That’s me they’re talking about- whoop whoop roll on inspection- coming soon people and fur babies 🐾

Very useful reminders here for all of us. 🐾 ❄️

Very useful reminders here for all of us. 🐾 ❄️

There are several things to consider when walking dogs in cold weather, so how can you keep your best four legged friend happy this winter?

🔸BEWARE OF POTENTIAL DANGERS ON WALKS🔸

A thick blanket of snow can hide a lot of potentially dangerous areas which may cause harm to your dog if they are off lead.

Ponds, lakes, and streams could also freeze over and may look solid, but the thin ice layer can cover deep and potentially fatal freezing water

For both of these reasons it is a good idea to keep your dog on the lead while out on walks in the freezing weather.

🔹CLEAN UP AND WARM UP WHEN YOU GET HOME🔹

If your usual walking route involves walking on roads, pavements, or paths, then there is a good chance that salt has been spread on them to melt any ice and reduce the risk of anyone slipping and hurting themselves. If your walk involves any of these surfaces then you should rinse your dog’s paws with warm water when you get home, as the salt can cause skin irritation.

Some dogs with longer coats may collect snowballs on their fur as they play and roll in the snow. If this happens to your dog, try your best to dust them off as they collect on your walk, but failing that rinse them off with warm water when you get home to melt them away

🔸CONSIDER INVESTING IN WINTER CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES🔸

Some smaller or short coated dogs feel cold in the winter nip, so it may be a good idea to buy a well fitting coat that will help keep them warm and dry on walks.

Road traffic accidents are common in the winter and there are a number of steps to be safe. Check to make sure that your dog is microchipped and that they are wearing ID tags incase they get lost after dark.

Reflective collars and jackets are a good idea, and there are even some bright LED collars and tags available to help make your dog easier to see by other walkers and road users.

Make sure your dog has a cosy dry space to stay warm when they get home, and if they are damp or wet check to make sure they aren’t getting too chilled as they dry off.
