What better way to start the week off than with some lovely words from a client we saw at the weekend. Both dog and owner smashed it. And with their session plan, will continue to do so at home. Not forgetting a big thanks from our senior trainee Chelsey and her dog Captain from Helping Hounds Dog Training 🐾

"Hollie (and Chelsea) were both amazing with our Staffy and myself. They gave me the confidence to follow my instincts and the tools to try new training techniques. Our dog Harper can be anxious around other dogs and so now we have a clear idea of how to help her. They were both so knowledgable and kind. Really admired how they were able to use their own dogs with Harper to help with our training. Brilliant service and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. Thanks to you both!"

LED Collars 🐢

I should have done this post at the beginning of Winter really but better late than never I guess πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

These little gadgets really are invaluable. Take it from me, when I was a dog warden, I cannot tell you how many times I picked up stray dogs and the finder said "I only saw them because of the lights in the collar".

Not only do they make them seen just to be found, it helps your dog be seen by people driving too.

A lot of the dogs I picked up escaped either from their own garden, or on a lead walk. Yep, jumped a fence, or slipped their collar or lead, and bolted (often due to fireworks).

For the price of less than Β£10, they really are worth their weight in gold. The little clip on LED flashing fobs are good, but as you have to attach them to your dogs collar, if they slip their collar, then they aren't going to do their job.

A seperate LED collar, and put it below their existing collar. That way, if their normal collar comes off, it's less likely to pull the light up collar off too.

It could be the difference between your dog being seen, and being found, or not πŸ™ˆ

Have a lovely weekend and stay safe all 🧑

Myths & Bad Advice πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Getting advice about dogs, their training, behaviour, and even their health is a minefield. So, here's some things we can put to bed once and for all.....

*****WARNING Colourful language inbound πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

🐢 "You should eat dinner before your dog so that they respect you"
Utter bu****it. Any dog owners or trainers saying this (yes, I've had this advice given to clients by other trainers), don't have a clue what they're talking about.

🐢 "You should always enter through doorways before your dog".
Another one that's a load of crap. Don't get me wrong, door manners are one thing, I like my dogs to wait at doorways/car boot till they are asked to move, for safety, not because it apparently makes me "own the room" πŸ™„

🐢 "Feeding dogs raw meat makes them aggressive" YAWN πŸ₯± Thousands of dogs are raw fed, it doesn't make them bloodthirsty.

🐢 "If you play tug with your dog, you should always win". A whole load of NOPE. Your dog will not think they own you because they won a game of tug. Let them win, it's fun πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

🐢 "If your dog toilets in the house you should rub their nose in it".
This is inhumane, disgusting, cruel, and lastly, doesn't work. Accidents happen, clean it up, move on, and do better to recognise when your dog needs the toilet. After sleep, food, play. Stay out till they go.

🐢 "You must be top dog"
This one got a lot of clout because of he who shall not me named ***cough - cough... Cesar Milan - cough*** 🀫
Listen, what your dog needs is love, time, guidance, boundaries, consistency, and fun, just like children....but please don't start all that 'fur-baby' s**t πŸ˜‰

There needs to be rules and expectations, but no-one needs to be ruling with an iron fist. It's not all rainbows and sunshine either though, a lot of dogs will take the p**s if you let them, you can say "No".

Training varies due to age, breed, size, temperament, sensitivity etc. But there are some absolutes in every sense, and that is that all of the above mentioned quotes, are absolute bo****ks.

Don't listen to it, don't do it, don't be a di****ad πŸ‘

Apologies for the language. Picture below proves that even Chop thinks all of the above is stupid advice πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚πŸΎ

What's your weekend looking like?

Today was a bit of a write-off for ATD due to the temperature being so low, and most sessions were with small breeds.

But, we took that as an opportunity to do some training with our own dogs instead πŸ‘Œ

Let's hope it warms up again and we can get back to it.

Enjoy your weekend all and post some pics of those pooches below, whether you're out and about or staying warm and snoozing on the sofa 🐾

Just a heads up to all with bookings over the next few days, we got a fair bit of snow yesterday that seems to be sticking around ❄️

It will be determined on each day but as you can see, with the amount of snow and water currently on the pathways, and with the temp dropping again tonight, we'll have a considerable amount of ice so there is a chance that sessions will need to be rescheduled due to safety.

Emails will be sent out if there is any issue.

Bright side, the field looks super pretty though β„οΈπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Emergency Pictures πŸ“Έ πŸ•

For those that don't know, a few years ago I was a dog warden. You know, the people that troll around with big butterfly nets trying to sn**ch your dog (I hope you can hear the sarcasm πŸ˜‰).

So whenever I see a lost or found post I always have a nosey and if I can, tag anyone I think may be able to help. I will say, there seems to be SO many dogs going missing at the moment. This time of year it is more common due to fireworks spooking dogs, wind blowing fences down, and holiday events meaning family leaving doors/gates open. But it doesn't feel like this is the only reason, there just seems to be way more lost/found dogs in general.

I can't say I have any idea why, but there are things that can be done by owners to help.

🐾 Get dogs chipped and keep microchip details UP TO DATE. Also, get your chip checked regularly. I will even be getting my own scanner this year to help with this as some can migrate or become faulty.

🐾 By law, all dogs must have an id tag when out. Unless actively working, like gun dogs, your dog should have a collar and tag on. Or a tag on their harness. This has been the law since the 90s. Your dog will get back to you SO much quicker if whoever finds them can call you themselves. Saves you some of those grey hairs πŸ˜‰

🐾 Know who to call. If your dog goes missing, don't waste time looking for numbers, find your dog wardens number now and save it. Find out who your local dog lost co-ordinator is, have local vets numbers in your phone.

🐾 Emergency pictures. I cannot tell you how many lost posts I've seen and the pictures are poor quality, of the dog asleep or too close up, or there's multiple dogs in the picture. Take Emergency pictures from front and side and just keep them in your phone.

This post has come due to me realising I need to update my own photos as Flossy is now grey in the face so the pictures below don't match her appearance anymore.

Really simple steps to help find your dog and get them home quicker.

Also, whilst I'm here, if you find a stray dog, contact all the same people above, warden, lost dog coordinator, and vets, if they dont have an id tag.
If you post a photo online, don't show the s*x of the dog. If they have one, take their collar off before taking a pic. These can then be used as questions for anyone claiming the dog to be theirs. And always ask for proof of ownership, like multiple pictures of the dog that haven't been used on a lost post.

Hopefully, no-one will need this advice . Accidents do happen, but it seems to be happening more and more so we need to at least do everything we can, as dog owners, to get the dogs back home asap.

Be safe all 🐾

Different dog, different play πŸ•

For those that follow the page and see my stories, you may notice that Flossy is often walked on her own. Whereas, Dutch and Chop are often walked together. There's a couple of reasons for this.....

Firstly, Flossy is quite temperamental. She's playful one minute, but the next, she's finished playing and wants to stop. But, she's not all that good at communicating that, so the other dogs can get a bit confused. I'll admit, as she's gotten older, her tolerance has improved. But, she does have a bit of a chip on her shoulder and I just don't need her starting something, especially when she can't follow through and defend herself, she's a chunky girl, but she's all weight, and she really doesn't know how to throw down.

Secondly, age. We have quite an age gap between Flossy and the other two. Flossy will be 7 years old in a couple of months, technically a vetaran, more so as she's a large breed. After her is Dutch, who has only just turned 4 years old this month. Then Chop, who is only a year and a half old, so a baby who's still got to learn a bit more about how to play appropriately.

I'm a firm believer in young dogs keeping old dogs youthful, but I still need to keep Flossy safe. And as you can see in the video, she plays for a short while, then gasses out and needs a sniff πŸ˜‚ Whereas Dutch likes to play, and play hard.

I'll admit, it's a pain in the arse walking them separately, but it just wouldn't be that enjoyable for any of them if they were all walked together. And I want them to enjoy themselves.

I'd also always recommend solo walks now and then for people with multi-dog homes. Just to get a bit of one-to-one time with each dog πŸ‘Œ

Some owners have a really cohesive pack of dogs, and they can walk together no problem. We used to have that set up, it just isn't the case anymore and that's fine.

Flossy can be as much of a party proper as she likes.....I've got the time πŸ˜‰

Happy Birthday to little miss Dutch Pup πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚πŸ₯³

A lot of you would have met her if you've had a behaviour consultation with me as she is our resident stooge dog to help with reactive dogs.

She is an absolute asset to All Things Dog and quite clearly the most important member of staff πŸ˜‰

So, join me in wishing this amazing little girl a Happy 4th Birthday πŸŽ‚ πŸ₯³

Training vs Safety

I'm a dog trainer, so, my dogs should be trained right? So why is my dog wearing a longline whilst out? Because I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Chop is trained, he has a brilliant recall. But, we haven't come across Deer yet, or Pheasants. Do I want to risk that under those distractions, he might actually act like a dog and chase them?

No I bloody don't.

Sometimes, you have to leave your ego at home and appreciate that even with all the training in the world, your dogs response can be unreliable or even just unknown. I've trained his recall under distraction, but it's hard to find a Deer willing to hang about as a stooge whilst I train πŸ˜‰

The field I'm in has lots of holes in the fences, holes we've left open so the wildlife has easy access and so that the young Deer don't have to jump the fences. We have a huge wildlife population here and the longline keeps them safe as well as Chop. In other environments, we don't need the line, but it changes depending on the level and type of possible stimulus'.

Again, Chop is trained, but in this environment, with the multiple scenarios that can happen, is it worth me risking him chasing something because he wanted to, because it ran out infront of him, or because I wasn't looking so didn't recall in time. No. I'd rather just stick a simple line on him and everyone can enjoy their day.

Don't feel bad or be made to feel like you are doing something wrong because you are being cautious and sensible. Some people use lines just to help ease their own anxiety, and that is absolutely fine.

Do you and f**k everyone else 😁

This is why I love my job 🧑

I know I take the p**s all the time, make jokes, and keep things light and sweary (I may have just made that word up? πŸ€”).

But really, I do this job to help people and their dogs.......and to get paid πŸ€ͺπŸ˜‚ Sorry....I had to get one in πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜‰

It genuinely makes me happy when clients put the work in, and because of that, get the results they wanted.

As a trainer, I just hold the ladder, you got to the top because you took the steps 🧑

28/10/2024

A little while ago we met Fluke and his owner for a behaviour consultation to help with his dog reactivity.

We jumped right in and got to work with engagement foundations, which, in such a short time, progressed amazingly. Once we had that line of communication open, we got a stooge dog out to see what was happening.

Engagement foundations are SO important because it not only helps with comms, but it often helps build owners' confidence too by helping them feel more in control. This is exactly what happened with Fluke and his owner. His reactivity was already a lot lower than normal just because he could draw some confidence from his handler.

He showed some anxiety but along with it, brilliant body language. When dogs are anxious of other dogs, the goal isn't to force them to interact or "make" them like dogs. Our aim is to make sure they communicate effectively, towards other dogs and to their owners. This way, everything is being done right on our end. Fluke is doing everything he can to say "No thanks, I don't want to say hello" in a controlled and balanced way. If it gets too much, his owner can step in and help.

Fluke and his owner did brilliantly in their session. By the end, we had both dogs walking past each other just a couple of feet away and Fluke was nothing but chilled.

Training plan done and work to do but a smashing start.

Fantastic work team Fluke 🐾
