HEIFER PELVIC SCORING

This is the first of two posts we are doing on pre-breeding assessments with the breeding season fast approaching for the spring block calving herds.

What is pelvic scoring?

This is where the Vet will take measurements of the vertical and horizontal axes of the pelvic canal to assess the cross sectional area. This can then be used to predict the size of calf that would be able to be delivered though the pelvic canal.

When should pelvic scoring be carried out?

In bulling heifers from 13 months of age. It would ideally be carried out annually so an average pelvic score for the herd can be calculated.

What are the benefits of pelvic scoring?

Pelvic scores can be useful in informing bull choices including complementary EBV for bulls, growth monitoring of heifers, reduce risk of assisted calvings, increased survivability of calf and dam at calving and also promoting genetic gain in more developed heifers as this is a highly inheritable trait.

Some changes to be made aware of. We entered the seasonally vector low period (SVLP) on January 21st. The following changes for people in the restricted zone are explained in the post.

Important to be aware that some restrictions do still remain in place:
- Pre-movement testing in the restriction zone is still a requirement
- Livestock keepers must still have a licence to move animals or germinal products out of the restriction zone
- Any post movement testing requirements set out in the license of restriction notice if animals were moved out of the restricted zone on or before 20 January 2025 must still be complied with.
- A license is still required to freeze germinal products in the restriction zone.

Any questions pick up the phone to the team and we can help!

Bluetongue update: Due to lower temperatures and reduced midge activity the risk of new infection and onward transmission due to vector activity is now very low.

As a result of the reduction in risk, certain restrictions are being eased from today (Tuesday 21 January) including removing the following:
• The requirement for post-movement testing of animals
• The use of insecticide on vehicles
• The requirement to send animals from the Restricted Zone to designated abattoirs.

Restrictions will be revised when vector activity increases again with warmer temperatures, which tends to be in March/April.

Please check the collection page on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/bluetongue-information-and-guidance-for-livestock-keepers and the press release: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/seasonally-vector-low-period-for-bluetongue-begins for more info.

A great new product on the market for treating twin lamb disease! Make sure you get hold of some before lambing!

🐑 With lambing well underway, do you have SELEKT Re-EWE-venate in your kit?
✔️More glycerol and propylene glycol than other drenches, for rapid and sustained energy replenishment to help ewes recover from twin-lamb disease.
✔️ Calcium propionate and potassium for reduction in the risk of hypocalcaemia and hypokalaemia.
✔️Biotin and vitamin B12 to support the rumen flora.

Morning all, we have circulated a newsletter article with an update on the ongoing Bluetongue outbreak. This picture shows the current "Restricted Zone", which has just been expanded once more due to more cases being found.

Key points from the newsletter are:
- Bluetongue is spreading across the UK
- Mortality and severe production losses are being reported
- Vaccines are available and can be used NOW, subject to certain conditions
- These vaccines help protect against production loss and mortality
- Cost of vaccination: approx. £5/animal for cattle and £2.50/animal for sheep
- Movement restrictions now apply to much of the geographical area that we cover

We are here to help and give advice. Please contact the practice if you would like to discuss this further or to sign up to our newsletter.
