Just to say THANK YOU to all of our clients and their owners for being so patient during these unprecedented times.

We are still closed due to the Welsh Government extending lockdown.

As soon as it is safe to do so, we will reopen with new social distancing guidelines.

The health and welfare of our clients is our priority so getting back to being able to treat them is important, but so is the safety of the humans.

We would love to see photos of our lovely clients during lockdown.

Everyone at The Dog Spa hopes that our clients, their owners and family are all staying safe and well and we look forward to seeing you all soon 🐶💙

Ted the cockapoo came in for a trial session on the aqua treadmill.

His owners are getting fed up with walking in the mud and would like him to have some exercise where he stays clean!

Hydrotherapy can be used to add variety to your dog’s exercise regime (and stops the need for a muddy bath!)

Sabo normally goes on the treadmill to help loosen up an old tricep injury but we thought we would try him in the pool to see if we can encourage his front legs to stretch a bit more to stretch out the scar tissue. The increased hydrostatic pressure in the pool also helps to reduce some of the pain.

Not bad for a first time!

The water provides resistance which makes moving through it harder than air, which means that you can build cardiovascular and muscle fitness. Increasing the heart rate can also help with weight loss.

Turbulence is the disruption of the natural flow of water. It can be used to massage and stimulate the skin, aiding circulation. It can be used to increase resistance and to work on balance which helps increase core stability. Turbulence can be created by the dog or the therapist.

Milo had TPLO (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy) surgery on both his cruciate ligaments in his stifle joint a year ago and his owner used hydrotherapy to rehabilitate him following the surgery. Milo now comes to maintain his strength. The turbulence created in the water helps to develop his postural muscles and the smaller muscles that help with structure and support, not just movement. This will help to strengthen and stabilise his stifles and support the TPLO surgery.

The viscosity of water provides an excellent source of resistance that can be easily incorporated into an hydrotherapy therapy exercise program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need for weights. Using resistance coupled with the water’s buoyancy allows an animal to strengthen muscle groups with decreased joint stress that can not be experienced on land.

Bonzo had spinal surgery a few years ago and initially started hydrotherapy to help with exercising using the support of water but now he comes on the aquatic treadmill to build and maintain muscles. The water is quite deep so that there is lots of resistance. Bonzo is also developing cardiovascular fitness as well as muscle strength.

Hydrostatic pressure is a property of water that helps to reduce swelling and associated pain. The hydrostatic pressure is exerted equally on something submerged beneath the surface. The hydrostatic pressure increases with depth.

Flo has a swollen tendon close to her carpal joint following a sprain. There is some swelling so to help reduce the swelling, Flo walks in deep water to increase the hydrostatic pressure.

All of our hydrotherapy happens in warm water, with the temperature around 30 degrees C. Warm water helps to relax muscles and as a result, can improve range of motion.

Hydrotherapy relies on the properties of water to help the dogs.

Daisy, has bilateral hip dysplasia and comes to us on a maintenance program.

The buoyancy of water is one of the most common properties that therapists rely on. The buoyancy of the water provides the body with support to reduce the load on the joints and allows the necessary muscles to be exercised.

Gracie has been in to The Dog Spa today to visit Denise, our ACPAT physiotherapist. Gracie suffers with hip dysplasia so Denise helps to keep the muscles around the hip strong and the hydrotherapy supports this.

Denise uses hydrotherapy as a tool of physiotherapy and both treatments compliment each other.

Fit & Fun Hydrotherapy Plans

Do you need to get your dog fit for competition? Or do you need to maintain your dog’s fitness?

Does your dog need some variety in its exercise pattern?

Have you thought about hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy offers a different, non-weight bearing form of exercise. Exercising in water helps to build muscle strength, both larger muscle groups used for movement and deeper core muscles used for stability. Water exercise reduces the loading pressure on bones and joints. Working in water also improves cardiovascular fitness.

Give us a ring to discuss individualised hydrotherapy plans for your dog.
