💕 Make a heart shape with your hands
💕 Pop a tasty treat between your thumbs
💕 Present your heart to your pup
💕 When they reach for the treat and their nose is between your hands, mark (say "yes" or "good") and release the treat from your thumbs

✨️ CLIENT PROGRESS ✨️
So proud of Leo and his humans for all of their hard work! Leo's family got in touch with me a couple of months ago to help with his barky/lungey behaviour towards dogs when on lead. Over a number of sessions, we worked with Leo on building engagement with his humans, management tools to use in the moment, and desensitisation to other dogs while on lead.
Last weekend, Leo and his family went to Dog Fest, where Leo had to be on lead in a busy environment full of other dogs. As you can see, he did brilliantly! 👏

👀👀👀 Eye contact! 👀👀👀
WHY?
🐾 Eye contact is a key foundation behaviour to lots of other behaviours that we teach our dogs, including loose-lead walking and recall.
🐾 It promotes engagement, reassurance, and bonding between you and your dog.
🐾 Clear communication between you and your dog. E.g. your dog wants to go out into the garden. He stands by the door and looks at you, you mark (say "good/yes/nice/clever"), and open the back door (his reward).
HOW?
🐾 Hold a treat in your closed fist with your arm outstretched to your side.
🐾 Wait for your dog to look at you (be patient, it will come!).
🐾 Mark (say "good/yes/nice/clever").
🐾 Reward with the treat from your hand.
🐾 Rinse & repeat!

Engaging in play with our canine companions is such a vital exercise in bonding, but I think we often forget to plan it into our busy lives. So this is me giving you permission to stop whatever you're doing, and go and play with your best friend!
