Can't believe is almost a wrap! We've loved every moment of sharing and learning with everyone. 🐰

But hold up, they're not done yet! Their final topic is all about companionship—from bonding tips to the perfect diet, they’ve got everything you need to know to keep your furry friends happy and healthy.

And remember, your likes, shares, and comments help spread the word about rabbit welfare. Join them in making a difference!

Why do rabbits need company? Rabbits have evolved to live in a group to both share warmth and warn about predators or danger - the famous leg thump! As rabbits must be on the alert for danger at all times of the day or night, a single rabbits will feel anxious. Many studies show that rabbits are happier and healthier living with another bonded rabbit than alone.
https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/companionship/

Rabbits are often bonded into pairs or small groups at a young age, and do need to be neutered in a domestic environment to keep the peace. The hormones in rabbits otherwise commonly cause aggression and significant injury. But, you can still bond older rabbits with care and selecting a good mate. You can find detailed information on rabbit bonding here:

Happy Day Four of Rabbit Awareness Week 2024! 🐰

Today, they’re diving into how you can create a thriving environment for your fluffy friends with the right nutrition. Let’s hop right into making mealtime both delicious and exciting for your bunnies! 🏡

Don't forget to like, comment, and share their posts with your fellow bunny lovers! 🐰

What does your bun need in their environment?
🏡 It is recommended that a pair of rabbits should have a minimum of a 2x3m indoor/outdoor combined space to include a sleeping area and free access to the outdoors. This should be secure against escape and predators and at least 1 metre high. Rabbits in the wild will typically enjoy an area the size of a football pitch!
💧Water must be available at all times, and a bowl is recommended unless your rabbits are only used to a drinker. Drinkers can get blocked with scale without it being easy to spot, or freeze in winter.
🥦Hay or grass must also be available at all times as rabbits need to graze low energy high fibre food at all times of the day and night
🐰Rabbits should have shade and places to hide, such as igloos, tubes or cardboard boxes. They need shelter from both hot weather and also the wind and rain and cold.
🐇Toys and games and items to chew are also really good to enrich their lives - treat toys and sticks to chew on, such as from fruit trees, can give them physical and mental activity and pleasure.

We hope everyone's enjoying Rabbit Awareness Week 2024 just as much as we are! 🐰

Today, they're diving deep into bunny behaviour.

Learn how to nurture positive habits and recognise the signs when something might be off.

Your furry friend counts on you to understand their needs, so let's hop to it!

Like, share, and comment to keep the conversation going! 🐇✨

As a prey animal, rabbits will try to hide their illness as much as possible, and will often be much sicker than they seem by the time they show you. What are the signs of illness in a rabbit?
🐰A lack of appetite should always be taken very seriously, and unlike other species, rabbits cannot cope with not eating even for several hours.
🐰A rabbit that is not moving around as normal is likely to be unwell or in pain, especially if they are closing their eyes or appear pinched or tense in the face
🐰A lack of normal droppings is also an indication of disease, as slowing of the bowels happens as part of, or as a consequence of, many illnesses.

What is normal behaviour?
🐇Rabbits should graze food regularly throughout the day, especially mornings and evenings, but they should not be without access to hay or grass at any time
🐇Rabbits are active! They should have plenty of space to run, jump, stretch up and binky!
🐇Rabbits need to be able to hide. If they feel threatened, rabbits must have a safe bolt-hole to go to, otherwise they will become very stressed
🐇Rabbits need companionship. As a social species, rabbits live together, and should not be kept alone. Studies show that companionship with another rabbit significantly helps with reducing stress and improving recovery from illness.

Welcome to Day Two of Rabbit Awareness Week 2024 - Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies!

Today they're hopping right into how what your bun eats affects their health.

🐰What do you feed your rabbit? Did you know that the correct diet is the single, most important thing, you can do to help your rabbit live a long and healthy life? Rabbits are specially adapted to graze high fibre low energy diets, so it's really important to provide them with these nutrients in captivity. A poor diet can lead to severe welfare problems, especially dental and bowel disease, and chronic illness.
A recent report highlights that 13% of owners still feed their rabbits museli mix, which is known to be eaten selectively leading to inadequate nutrition. Also, only 73% of owners feed their rabbits hay!

🥦What does a good rabbit diet look like then? The majority of food (85%!) should be hay or fresh (or kiln-dried) grass. Next up we want to give some fresh foraged herbs or dark green (low moisture) vegetables (10%) and a very small amount of pellets (not museli!) (5%) - eg a palm full twice a day.

What do you feed your rabbit? Post pics of them enjoying their dinner!

We have taken in a small dog found straying in Trumpington. Please share this post to help us find the owner, who will need to show us some form of proof that the dog is theirs.

Unfortunately this dog does not have a collar and the microchip has not been registered, so we cannot trace an owner. Both of these are a legal requirement. Please take a moment to ensure your dog's microchip details are up-to-date and you are compliant with the law.

We will now need to contact the dog warden if an owner is not found. Again, this is our legal obligation, so we cannot accept any help from members of the public unfortunately.

11/06/2024

This is an important post that highlights how frequently the body language of our pets, especially dogs, can be misinterpreted. We regularly see videos of dogs on social media, often with children, adorned with captions explaining how cute they are, whilst the dogs looks increasingly uncomfortable. Often I am wincing in front of the screen waiting for the snap, or bite, to come. Please do read and share this post, and look for resources on how to understand your dog's body language.

Dog Bite Awareness

➡️ Animal videos on social media can be cute, but veterinary and behaviour professionals regularly see some that are described as adorable when in fact they fill us with anxiety to see!

➡️Reading a dogs body language can be difficult, but it's important to teach all the family how to pick up signs of a stressed, upset or agitated dog, especially children. Dogs usually tell us MANY times before they bite but often in a very subtle way.

➡️Everyone has their bad days, and we must not push our canine companions to the brink of their patience by failing to recognise telltale signs that the situation they are in makes them uncomfortable.

➡️Every dog is individual, some climb the ladder of communication/reaction (see picture in comments) quickly, others will be telling us for a LONG time that they are unhappy and are uncomfortable with the situation before they are pushed to react.

➡️ Veterinary professionals come across many people who tells us the dog has bitten without any warning, but the likelihood is (although not in every case) that the dog was telling us and we just didnt know how to listen and we know it can be very hard, which is why we want to educate.

Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors - APBC stated:

➡️Dog behaviour expert Dr Carri Westgarth, from the University of Liverpool, said: "It is important to remember that any dog can bite regardless of how well you know the dog, and most bites will occur in the owner's home.

"...We should ensure that we give dogs their own safe space to be alone, give them plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and when your dog wants to be left alone - leave them be.

"Dog bites to children can be very severe so ensure that you observe children and dogs closely and intervene when necessary.

"Dogs do not want to bite you, it is a last resort response for them, so watch out for any warning signs of them being uncomfortable in a situation and remove yourselves, or them, from it."

Every dog is individual but some signs are:

➡️Licking lips?
➡️Yawning?
➡️Whale eye?
➡️Frozen?
➡️Crouching?
➡️Tense?
➡️Rolling on back?
➡️Ears back?
➡️Panting?
➡️Turning away?

It may save a life, a child or the dogs!

Are your rabbits protected and up-to-date with their annual vaccines? These appointments also include a full health check with a focus on good care and prevention of disease. With flies and mosquitoes now very much awake and about, unprotected pets are at risk of these typical fatal diseases if not vaccinated, even if they live indoors.

Grass seed season has begun! We have now started seeing appointments booked for grass seeds in ears and feet, and possibly one in the lung.

Is your dog a poodle, spaniel, or cross breed? Is your dog very hairy? If so, our top tip is to get them clipped short ASAP, especially around the toes and under the ears. Other preventative measures include
- checking feet, ears, armpits and groins for seeds after every walk and removing them
- consider booties, ear wraps, face mesh covers etc - see our previous posts
- avoid areas with lots of seeds and seed heads, especially as they start to dry and drop off

If you are worried your pet may have a grass seed in it's ear, paw, eye, nose, or elsewhere, call us! 01223 249331
