❗ RAGWORT WARNING ❗

With the hot weather set to stay with us for the foreseeable it is becoming even more important to be on the lookout for ragwort in your horse’s field.

Grazing is becoming increasingly sparse due to the lack of rain, potentially making ragwort more appealing to horses. When ragwort begins to dry out, it starts to lose its bitter taste but still remains toxic. Being more palatable, horses may seek it out when foraging and become more likely to eat parts of the plant.

Ragwort poisoning can accumulate over longer periods of time and have devastating effects. Be sure to regularly check your pasture and remove any ragwort to minimise the risk and help stop the cycle of growth.

The team at home led by Gemma-Kate Myles did such a good job with ensuring everything ran smoothly whilst I was away at regionals. Always feels good to return home to a lovely tidy yard. Big thank you to Gemma , Freddie, Libby and Megan.
It was lovely to see Libby get on so well with my homebred Donny today 😍

ℹ️ COOLING HORSES

Have you read our latest blog about cooling horses?

Here are some takeaways from Dr David Marlin.

The key facts are:

❗Cooling hot horses with cold water DOES NOT
1) cause muscle damage
2) cause laminitis
3) induce shock
4) give horses heart attacks
5) prevent them from cooling by constriction of skin blood flow

❗Water left on horses DOES NOT
1) insulate and prevent heat loss
2) cause them to overheat

❗It is NOT MORE EFFECTIVE TO
1) start at the feet and work up
2) scrape water off whilst cooling (it causes them to warm up)
3) focus on large blood vessels
4) cover the horse with wet towels
