Try it yourself and you'll soon see why you must never do this!

According to recent polling, 58% of people wouldn't leave their dog inside a car on a warm day. Worryingly, this means that more than 40% of people may still potentially put their pets at risk 😞

Even if you park in the shade or leave the windows open, a car can become unbearably hot in a matter of minutes which can be extremely dangerous - and even fatal.

Important...... Factual information 🤔

With temperatures rising this week, it's vital to remember: cars can heat up fast, and our dogs can't regulate their body temperature like we do. In just minutes, a car can become dangerously hot, putting our furry friends at risk of heatstroke. Never leave your dog unsupervised in a vehicle – it could be lethal 🐶🚗

Please share Rory he is still looking for his forever home he is the most special boy an old head on young shoulders - he has progressed so much and apart from if there are raised voices which worries him and makes him sad, He needs an adult home because of this with other dogs in the countryside to enjoy his walks, people who over look the fact that he forgets his size and will climb into your lap.

⭐Name: Rory
⭐Breed: Labrador
⭐Age: 10 months
⭐Location: In foster in Gloucestershire living in family home with other dogs & cats

✔️Good recall off lead
✔️Travel well 🚘
✔️Can live with other dogs 🐶
✔️Would be best in adult home due to being nervous of loud voices
✔️Can live with cats 🐱

⭐Website: www.starfishdogrescue.co.uk

Rory came into rescue due to a relationship break down.

Rory was extremely anxious and worried when he first arrived, there was a lot of cowering with us, very worried about everything from putting a collar on, extremely anxious in the car where he would throw up, if a voice was as much raised he was gone hiding somewhere, very heart breaking to witness.

The dog that has been emerging in big steps every day has been one of the reasons we do rescues to watch this dog grow and bloom over such a short period to the dog we first met is why dogs are so special once they feel safe and loved .

I am now writing about a dog that if I could I would keep him in a heart beat - he has the most lovely nature typical Lab and adores cuddles and affection so much its like he tries to climb inside you.

He plays with other dogs particularly paired up a young female Lucy who he loves playing with and sleeping with.

From being terrified of the car he now cannot wait to get in. He was terrified of the crate he now sleeps in at night in the kitchen with the other dogs and now he chooses to sleep in their sometimes of his own accord during the day and at night if we are out I only have to wave the sausage and he cannot get in faster enough. He sleeps well at night and is house trained.

Out on walks he is joy to walk with if you love a dog who loves being out in the countryside he has so much energy he loves running, sniffing and will keep this up for the complete walk, he is fine meeting new dogs out but if they are too pushy or too over the top he will run away back to me he is still building on that confidence.

He is a beautiful gentle soul and will get a lot of interest because of him being a young Lab and beautiful but its really important we find the right home for him who can give him what he needs to feel safe and secure we will not take anything less as we do for all our dogs.

He needs another dog or dogs - one that will play with him and be his friend. He is living in adult family home with grown up children that is busy with lots of comings and goings which he copes with, he loves us all and loves meeting new people but he would not cope with young children and the chaos and noise that sort of home brings at times as if there is as much as a raised voice he has gone it terrifies him. He will go and hide.

He needs a home that meets his exercise needs, I have done lead walking with him as he was terrified of the lead and he has done really well walking around our village with the cars etc but still worried so he will not suit a town.

You will need to be a family or people who have had rescue dogs before and understand that a dog like Rory will take time but with his temperament he will with the right guidance get over this, he has missed out on socialization around towns, people, cafe's, dog training but with another dog by his side he will get this quickly once he trusts you. But you need to have the time to do this.

Rory is actually for a young dog very easy to live with once he has had his walk he is happy to chill out on the sofa or floor with the other dogs with no problems at all.

We have done quite a few videos of Rory we have put at the bottom of this write up so you can get a feel for this beautiful soul in different situations.

Rory is fully vaccinated, chipped, flea/wormed, he is not neutered yet as only 10 months so he will not be homed with entire dogs (we do check people's Vet records), he will be need to be done once he has finished growing and more confident and this will be part of the Adoption Contract.

Do you know which animals can’t live alone?

Being highly sociable animals, guinea pigs and rabbits cannot be kept alone, so keeping them in same species pairs can help them stop feeling lonely or stressed! 🐇

But remember, they should always be kept with another neutered compatible companion, to stop any unwanted litters.

As much as we love our furry friends, our company isn’t a replacement for a companion of their own kind ❤️

Despite the health issues and costs associated with owning a brachycephalic breed, ownership of French bulldogs and pugs has increased since 2020 📈

Social media is flooded with 'cute' photos of these breeds, but sadly every post, like and share risks fuelling demand for dogs who are born to suffer and irresponsible breeders are profiting from their pain.

If you agree that breeding for extreme features has gone too far, pledge to join the battle against brachycephaly: https://bit.ly/3V5cb1G

Be aware that lilies are dangerous for cats if ingested.

Be aware that lilies are dangerous for cats if ingested.

Do you know how poisonous lilies can be for cats? 😨

Nine-month-old Lewi needed emergency treatment after coming into contact with the fragrant flower in the neighbour’s garden. When Lewi returned home, she was lethargic and very quiet, which was unlike her. She also had some strange orange stains on the fur around her mouth. Worried, her family went outside to find out what she had eaten. They spotted a dying bouquet of flowers next door, containing lilies, and assumed Lewi had most likely eaten some of the pollen 😧

Knowing lilies are very dangerous to cats, they called the team at our Wolverhampton Pet Hospital for help. When Lewi got to the Pet Hospital, she was admitted for an IV fluid drip and blood tests straight away. Luckily, her initial blood tests showed that her kidneys had not yet been badly affected.

Lilies are highly toxic to cats. If they eat or lick any part of a lily plant, such as the leaves, petals, or pollen, they’re likely to develop kidney damage. This can lead to kidney failure and death if left untreated 😿

Lewi stayed overnight so she could be monitored closely by the team. Thankfully, the next day, her blood test results were normal and she was able to go home.

Speaking about Lewi, her owner’s granddaughter said: “We got Lewi to keep my 80-year-old Grandma company as she lives alone. Ever since they met, they’ve developed such a lovely bond. We’ll always be grateful for PDSA; without them, my Grandma wouldn’t have somewhere to turn for affordable vet treatment in a life-threatening situation.” 🥰

This spring and summer, please keep lilies away from prying paws 🐾 And if you’re worried they may have come into contact with them, here are the symptoms to look out for: http://pdsa.me/WRof

There really are many reasons why a dog is on a lead as there are different reasons why people don't respect keeping their own dogs in check when they see a dog on a lead. This is well worth the read if you own a dog or know someone who does. Thanks for sharing this important information. 🐾

📣OFF LEAD DOGS THIS POST IS FOR YOU 📣

Dear Dog Pawrents,

I’m not sure what’s happening lately but I’m seeing so many off lead dogs, running up to on lead dogs, and their owners are no where in sight or they’re completely oblivious.

I want to highlight what happened to Mila last week. An off lead dog came running over to her, albeit wanting to play (as it was play bowing ect) but this is not okay. Adding to this, she had her sign on stating ‘I’ve got a bad back’, and if you’re a dog owner you should know that yellow means ‘nervous’.

I don’t know what else I could have done to make it more apparent to other dog walkers that Mila wants to be left alone. It’s not okay that your dog runs up to her, it’s not okay that your dog has no recall, it’s not okay that you’re on your phone not paying attention, it’s not okay that your dog is friendly, I’m sick of hearing this phrase.

When your dog runs over to an on lead dog, you have no idea what that dog has gone through. In our case Mila slipped her disc 3 years ago and she was paralysed, she’s still unsteady on her back legs because her nerves are still damaged from when the disc slipped. She does not want your dog jumping on her. This is not okay. Have some respect for others.

Similarly, there are so many more reasons why dogs are on lead and why they do not want off lead dogs invading their space. They could be a rescue dog who was previously abused, they could be anxious, nervous, previously used as a bait dog, reactive, scared, disabled, the list goes on. There are so many reasons why, but my point is all dogs should be able to enjoy their walk. And ultimately it’s the on lead dogs who then get judged because they are reacting to a situation that they never wanted to be in, in the first place.

It’s a privilege to own a dog, it’s not a hobby. To all dog owners who have off lead dogs with no recall and say ‘my dog is friendly’ please educate yourself. This is NOT okay. Shame on you for being so naive, have some respect for other dog owners and their dogs. You have no idea what their dog has gone through. Do not let your dog approach a dog that is on lead, take some responsibility and stop being irresponsible. Respect other dogs and their owners who are on their own journey.

Kind Regards,

Former resident Mila and her mum who is one of the trustees of TRH.

A WORD ABOUT WAGS
“I don’t understand why that dog reacted so badly to me; his tail was wagging!”

Contrary to popular belief, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a dog is happy.

Dogs communicate through so many different types of body language, but the wag and the tail position are probably one of the easier to notice.

As with most things it depends on the individual dog. Some breeds naturally carry their tails in a different position and some breeds wag their tails differently to others.

Wags and tail positions should always be looked at in context and together with the rest of the body language. Body language should always be looked at as a “video” and not as an isolated “picture”.

Noticing how your dog’s tail usually looks or how the tail behaves when they’re happy to see you or relaxed and contented, provides a good base line to interpret other types of tail language.

I often watch my dogs’ tails with fascination as they stalk or hunt for something, bark at something outside or see another dog approaching while out walking.

The type of wag and position of their tails gives me so much information about their emotional state.

Although some people won’t agree, I definitely see wags to the right when my dogs are happy and wags to the left when there is arousal, uncertainty, predatory behaviour or other emotions going on.

Not only is the tail an important method of communication but it also plays a role in balance, stability, movement and counterbalancing should a dog quickly change direction.

I believe that tail docking destroys an essential part of a dog's ability to communicate with other dogs by creating a distinct social disadvantage or misunderstanding as tail signals can’t be read.

People with working dogs believe that tail docking is necessary to prevent tail injuries or improve performance, but many countries have banned this practice either completely or only under specific medical circumstances.

Start taking notice of what your dog is doing with their tail - you may find it interesting and it may open up a new way of understanding how your dog is feeling.

Here is a link to a graphic I created with some different tail positions and what they might mean -

We're super lucky that across the UK, we have some beautiful areas of countryside to enjoy with our furry pals 🌳 But, we need to keep the countryside special for everyone 🐕

As we're in lambing season, it's important to be mindful of new lambs and their protective mums! For this reason, it’s best to keep your dog on a lead when walking across farmland 🐑

BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

The challenges of teenage dogs

The saying - "Parents with teenagers understand why some animals eat their young" is something that many parents of teenagers will relate to.

Many people are unaware that dogs also go through a teenage stage and are frustrated and unprepared for the changes it may bring.
Statistics show that many dogs are surrendered or re homed during this phase as their owners no longer “like” the way their dogs behave, can’t handle them and just give up on them.

The teenage brain is going through many changes. Think of it as being “rewired”. The rewiring process can cause some parts not to work at all, work sporadically or have too much current. The re wiring process often causes new, out of character or unexpected behaviour.

There are many similarities to the changing human teenage brain. There’s a valid scientific reason why car insurance premiums for young adults under 25 are more expensive. The brain is not fully matured – irrational decisions, risk taking, poor choices and accidents are more likely to happen.

Be patient, understanding and most of all consistent with your teenage dog.

Don’t give up on them. They are feeling just as frustrated as we are.

Being aware of what is happening in their brain as it develops to full maturity helps us to be more accepting.

Remember that this is just a phase and it will get better.

Beautiful Pebbles 🐾💝

Beautiful Pebbles 🐾💝

Pebbles - is an approx. 4 year old Cocker Spaniel Bitch being fostered in Gloucestershire in adult home with other dogs.

Lovely Pebbles does not have a history due to being picked up as a stray. She did her 7 days at a Council Pound and then came into our care.

When she came in she was in a terrible state and had to have her whole coat removed she was so good for us and the groomer.

That first day

https://youtube.com/shorts/jm84Hz1ptJY?si=dJEk6VEBxhQGdTyT

Such a mess poor girl

https://youtube.com/shorts/0WDBGMipd5w?si=DHh89FXSySp5DBFE

Was so good being groomed

https://youtu.be/zS1lFnvd8Ys?si=LmqoP7FIhpFQM_8V

https://youtu.be/lEqreN7DSTY?si=gOreKtWt8urIjrs_

Pebbles is a lovely dog, friendly been good with the other dogs and loves people. Temperament wise you could not wish for a better dog. Its pretty obvious she has not lived in a home before but she has adjusted very well. She is living with 4 other dogs with no problems other than a bit growly when tired at night but that is all.

Her foster carers have been taking her out and about, she has been to Garden Centres, Pubs, Scent work classes even attended an agility class. She has a waggy tail for everyone bless her.

At the garden centre lots of good smells

At Agility Club

https://youtube.com/shorts/P48brpM39yI?si=SwSmpi0jOSEZu15f

She has been off the lead but very distracted by smells etc which she found very exciting so not a reliable recall needs work. She travels really well. Her house training is more or less there. She sleeps in a crate in the foster carer's bedroom.

First time off the lead

https://youtube.com/shorts/1XSNrX9TIbA?si=U5Vo2AeKDkuRNYJh

So lots of positive for this lovely little dog but she will need an experienced home to continue the work her foster home is doing with her introducing her to this big world out there.

Off the lead with her foster family

Learning to play with a ball

https://youtube.com/shorts/hEtFkTSCwYY?si=1iycHC4JiTt96Ls9

We think preference will be for her to go with another dog or dogs and as we said an experienced rescue home, not full time workers and people who understands how to slowly build up her exposure to the world.

Pebbles has all the makings of being a lovely companion, she is a busy dog though not a coach potato type.

Pebbles has been to our Vets, she has started her vaccinations, when she went in to be spayed it was found she had already been spayed, there were worries about some small bobbles which the Vet is sure its nothing but we have had a sample taken and its been sent off for analysis and we will get the report back in a week.

If you feel you could be the right match for Pebbles please email us [email protected] in the first instance for our questionnaire.
