Another five 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 review from one our cat clients πŸ˜ƒ

β€œIt’s always a pleasure to visit Origin Vets, Bean was treated like a princess, she given the time and understanding! She was allowed time to explore the room and get a feel for the place. Once Bean had, had enough she was then given the time relax until she was ready again. We were put in the room with with the sofa ( bean took full advantage of that) and she had a good snoozy while the vets examined her.

Without a doubt we give 5+ stars πŸŒŸβ€

Owner : Daisy May
Cat: Bean 12 yrs old domestic short hair

Thank you so much to all our wonderful clients that take the time to leave such lovely reviews. Our team really appreciate reading these.

πŸˆβ€β¬› 🌟 Akira’s Story 🌟 πŸˆβ€β¬›

Akira is a beautiful 7 yr old silver tabby and white domestic short hair who came in for a routine nurse clinic with our feline nurse Claire six weeks ago. Akira had her blood pressure taken as part of the nursing checks and it was found to be very high (over 220!) and normal would be significantly lower (between 120-140mmHg).

Claire referred Akira to see our Vet Dr Sophie who found the physical examination to be otherwise normal. A blood sample was run to check her biochemistry including Thyroid parameters to reveal all was otherwise normal without any evidence of kidney disease. This was important to note as many high blood pressures incite are related to kidney disease and or thyroid issues.

Akira was placed on medication which she takes with ease and her recent blood pressure taken has shown her blood pressure s have come down beautifully to 144 now. This is fantastic news !

🐈 Did you know that 1 in 25 cats age 7 and over will have high blood pressure ? This increases as they age too.
High blood pressure can be primary or secondary to another disease process (most are secondary hence it so important to check for underlaying abnormalities on bloods and eye examinations)

πŸ’” High blood pressure can affect the blood pressure in the eyes and lead to full blindness if not treated as well as heart disease and worsen kidney failure.

🩺 This is why as part of being a gold cat friendly clinic we firmly believe in advising twice yearly blood pressure monitoring of any cat age 7 and over. The first checks are only £12 to see if your cat needs to be monitored closely.

πŸ’¨ 🌧️ STORM SUPPORT 🌧️ πŸ’¨

With Storm Darragh going to build up further strength this afternoon it is import at to take a few steps of preparation to ensure your pets are safe

🌟 Move them indoors (where possible). Keep cats inside and keep an eye out for other cats that may have sheltered in your garden , shed or garage or under your car

🌟 For outdoor set ups such as rabbits hutches and runs and aviaries ensure they are secured down and if possible in the most sheltered part of the garden away from prevailing winds and rain

🌟 Extra deep straw bedding is really insulating for rabbits and any outdoor Guinea pigs or ferrets. They can burrow into it to keep warm too

🌟 Ensure there are plenty of dry warm hides to share between all the group and at least one spare

🌟 Checking water bowls and bottles are full and free from any ice and bottles are secured so wind won’t dislodge them

🌟 For cats that are usually outdoors then keeping them indoors can be a stressful situation so ensuring they have plenty of hides to snuggle into. Sprays like pet remedy and feliway spray and their plug ins can help keep them calm too.

🌟 Provide plenty of enrichment for food foraging to help distract them from any load noisy that might occur in the wind

🩡 Meet Earl 🩡

Earl came in this week to be castrated. This was performed under anaesthetic and is an important part of cat ownership to help prevent spread of diseases and unwanted kittens.

Earl took it all in his stride and was up and about and loving his yummy food not long after his procedure. He was a particular fan of our cat castle and loved our catnip dreamers too !

Goose claimed her free dental health check, has your cat ? 🦷 πŸˆβ€β¬›

πŸˆβ€β¬› Goose came in for her post dental check this week.
Despite being only three she needed several out last week due to root exposure. Goose was given the all clear from these areas as they have healed well.
Goose still needs one more tooth out which is one of her big lower canines which we will be doing in a few weeks time.

Sometimes we need to do staged dentals when the jaw is so fragile to be able to have too many teeth removed at one time especially if the X-rays show severe inflammation such as in the case of Goose.

Dr Sophie Jenkins went through the pre and post dental X-rays with Goose’s owner so they are fully informed of why the teeth were removed and why the canine needs to be removed in a few weeks.

Goose has been extremely comfortable since her dental. She has been eating better than she has in a long time and has been very content again. She loved the catnip dreamies in the consult and made herself quite comfortable on the chair grooming herself whilst Dr Sophie and her owner were talking and viewing the X-rays.

Goose’s owners took advantage of our *FREE* dental health checks that we are running. They were very pleased they made the choice to come in and take us up on this offer as they didn’t realise how tender Goose gums really were.

Book your cats free dental check today via our online booking on www.originvetsclinic.co.uk or call us Monday to Friday 02922362166 to register and book your complimentary dental health check.
The great news is we are taking on cat clients and we have a lovely quiet clinic for just cats rabbits and exotics with free ample onsite parking just off Newport Road Cardiff !

Kitty πŸˆβ€β¬› was in for her Spay today.
She was under the special watch of our feline lead nurse Claire Lewis RVN.

Here you can see Claire monitoring Kitty’sanaesthetic with :

🩺 An oesophageal stethoscope, listening for any changes in both rate and rhythm of her heart beat and also her breathing rate and sounds
A normal stethoscope is also used to monitor her lung sounds over the lung field.
A capnograph attached to her endotracheal tube to look for changes in her carbon dioxide levels that can indicate subtle changes in her breathing
An electrocardiogram to monitor changes in her electrical activity of her heart that can indicate abnormalities
🩸A pulse oximeter to assess her oxygenation levels
🌑️A thermometer to make she Kitty stays nice and warm without over heating

πŸ’‰It’s so important to monitor patients closely and to tailor anaesthetics to every patient. Our team are very geared to making any changes needed and keep up to date with the best options for anaesthesia and medications that can be given.

We are pleased to say Kitty made a full recovery and went home with pain relief on board for the next few days too.
Kitty was also microchipped under our kitten package and received her next flea and worming treatment too.

How sweet is Frodo !

Frodo was born in foster care earlier this year with very experienced fosters who normally rehome the fosters that they care for (under local charities). However Frodo captured their heart and so he has remained with them in his forever home. ❀️ 🐾

Frodo has been seeing us at Origin Vets Clinic this week with a a tender throat. He has shown improvement and fingers crossed he continues to improve over the weekend. If not we already have a plan in place for imaging next week. Until then he certainly enjoyed the catnip dreamies during his consult!

Send some positive vibes for Frodo over the weekend !

This is beautiful β€œCat” who came in for her dental this week.

Her owner took advantage of our free dental checks and it was noted that Cat had quite a bit of tartar on her teeth 🦷 that required removal.

This video shows how well a calm environment with a little bit a cat music 🎢 helps our feline friends to recover quickly and start eating too. Cat even let our fantastic feline nurse Claire remove her intravenous cannula without any one needing to hold her at all !

Cat music 🎢 has been proven to help calm cats. It is music that is 60beats per minute and is combined calm classic music with a very low gentle drone of white or green noise to help cats relax ☺️

If you would like to book your cat in for a free dental check then please contact 02922362166 or visit www.originvetsclinic.co.uk to book an appointment

October is Pet Wellness Month!
Today we are discussing dental health.
Did you know that more than 70% of cats over the age of 3 suffer from some level of dental disease?
The most common issues we see are:

🐱Gingivitis – this is caused by plaque bacteria which colonise the space between the teeth and the gum, causing inflammation. It is generally reversible with treatment
🐱Periodontitis – if left untreated, gingivitis can develop into this more serious condition which can cause irreversible damage.
🐱Tooth Resorption - a condition where the body starts to break down and absorb the structures of a tooth. This can expose the nerves in the tooth and become very painful. It also increases the risk of teeth fractures.

If you are worried about your cat's teeth, book in for a FREE dental check! We will grade your cat's teeth and look for any other issues as well. If your cat requires any treatment, we will offer fair and transparent prices, which can be seen on our website: https://www.originvetsclinic.co.uk/price-list-and-services

Our prices include dental x-rays, which are very important to perform dentals, but unfortunately not all vet practices have them.

October is Pet Wellness Month!

To celebrate this, we are offering a special deal for wellness screens in cats!
Wellness screens are designed for healthy cats, to try to detect any diseases early.

Older cats (over 7 years old) in particular benefit from these screens.

DID YOU KNOW?
🐱 1 in 5 cats over the age of 9 can have high blood pressure?
🐱 40% of cats over 10, and 81% of cats over 15 have kidney disease?
🐱 10% of cats over 10 have hyperthyroidism?

All three of these diseases can have very vague or mild symptoms at the beginning of their development, and all benefit from early detection and treatment.

If you would like to book your cat in for a wellness screen, contact us today on 02922 362166, or book in on PetsApp! https://lnk.pet/originvetsclinic

October is Pet Wellness Month!

Today we are discussing vaccines. Vaccines are a key way to prevent potentially fatal diseases from affecting your cat.

Vaccines can be started from 8 weeks old. The primary course involves two vaccines, 3-4 weeks apart. After that, vaccines are recommended yearly. Not every part of the vaccine needs to be given every year, and here at Origin Vets Clinic, we follow the WSAVA guidelines to avoid over vaccinating.

If you would like to book your cat in, contact us today on 02922 362166, or book in on PetsApp! https://lnk.pet/originvetsclinic
