French soldiers & Red Cross "Mercy" dogs before departing for the Front - by the west gate of the Tuileries Gardens (Place de la Concorde) - Paris, France. 1915

"Red Cross dogs were vital in helping wounded soldiers during World War I when trench warfare was used. They were normally sent out at night into no man's land (the ground between the two opposing trenches) when the battles were not raging to locate the injured men. Their keen sense of smell and good night vision gave them the advantage of finding soldiers in the dark without bringing much attention to the enemy.

Many breeds were used as Red Cross dogs, also called Mercy dogs, including German shepherds, sheepdogs, Airedale terriers, bloodhounds, retrievers and collies. According to the Red Cross, it was about the character of the dog, not the breed. Before being sent to the battlefields, the dogs were trained under realistic battle conditions. After a few weeks of training, they were ready to serve their country. They knew which soldiers to help by the type of uniform they wore, and they knew to try to help only those who were still alive.

Saddlebags carrying water and first aid equipment were often strapped to the dogs when they went searching for the men. If the dog found a soldier who was not too badly wounded, the soldier could often stabilize his injuries using the medical supplies and then follow the dog back to the trench. If the soldier was unable to walk or was unconscious, the dog would return to his handler bringing back the wounded man's helmet or a piece of his uniform to indicate to their keeper that they had located someone. The dog would then lead a stretcher party to the victim.

It's estimated that there were upwards of 10,000 Red Cross dogs used during the Great War, and they were credited for saving thousands of lives over the course of the war. They were able to locate wounded soldiers in hard to find places such as in thickets and bushes and at the bottom of deep ravines. The dogs would also lead the men to bodies that were thought to be dead but when brought back to the medics they discovered they still had life in them. One surgeon recalled "It is purely a matter of their instinct, which is far more effective than man’s reasoning powers.”

One notable dog belonging to the French army, Prusco, was credited with saving over a hundred men after one battle. Sometimes Prusco would drag a soldier to a safe place from enemy fire before running back to his handler.

Red Cross dogs were true heroes during WWI and will always be remembered for their bravery, intelligence and kind hearts. "

Cut and paste (with permission) from Emma's page. Pippa was supplied and trained by myself a couple of years ago now for her son James.

Pippa was asleep on my bed, I was working at my desk, James was in his room with his bedroom door shut. I had all of James’ alarms switched off on my phone and sure enough, without any clues from the humans or alarms, The Nose twitched, Pippa woke up and told me James was going low; she smelt it from down the hall, through a closed door. She’s amazing ❀️

Meet Ava a trained and experienced Diabetic Alert Dog. She's back with me for 12 day's public access refresher training. Lockdown hasn't helped her. Im getting her back out in public places. Assistance dogs of any kind must be megga calm and well behaved when in work or public places such as restaurants and alike.

It's a tough job but someone has to do it 😊

The way a dog moves it tail can shed light on its mood - and other dogs can spot and respond to these differences, a study suggests.

I've just finished my third one to one dog training consultation via zoom. I hadn't even thought of doing it as I'm not that tech savvy 😁. However, as I've been asked by potential customers. If I can offer it, then hey why not πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The way it works is to send me an email firstly [email protected] with as much background as possible and what you would want to achieve. That way I can plan the session and not waist time asking the same questions. Although please be prepared for questions πŸ‘.

To date via zoom I have worked with two pet dogs and owners, who's dog's let's just say are a little unruly. Plus an owner trained assistance dog who had hit a few training hurdles, and needed some advice.
I can see this being suitable for both domestic and working dogs and budding trainers. Totally confidential and I just love to share knowledge. I'm not saying I'm the solution 100% , but I'll have a dammed good go. Plus I'm not bad at training dogs and dog handlers. Even if I say so myself πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‰

Cost Β£40 for up to one hour if during normal office hours. Β£50 if evenings or weekends.

Day 40 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰.

Today was the last day of my initial training. Tomorrow will be the first day of my continuous training (no pressure) πŸ™ˆ. Dad met Simon in town centre as usual. Silly me I went to the bench where we usually meet him. I said hi to the wrong person πŸ˜‚ Simon was sat on a different bench 😁. We settled quite quickly and a stranger came over. He was VERY CHATTY and a little odd. Neither Simon or dad knew him. I was really good even though the man was silly. I behaved myself and just said hi πŸ˜‰.
We then went to a cafe where I behaved very nicely while dad and Simon had a MASSIVE , which is very important training apparently πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. After they had breakfast dad did the scent game. Which was really easy, but I do like to please them 😁.
I then had my last play with Bandit, ohhh I'll miss him πŸ˜”. I do hope Simon will bring him, when he comes to test us in a couple of months 😁.
Finally, we all went back to my home. Dad did something slightly different. He played the scent game for real. I needed help but got a huge fuss from him (IT WAS AMAZING). It's really important that dad's the only one in the family that does this. Otherwise ill get very confused and fail as an diabetic Alert dog.
Dad and I have been given a set of instructions by Simon, that we must follow to the letter for the next 14 days πŸ™„Phewwww. Then Simon will review our progress. Meanwhile dad has to WhatsApp Simon every third day with a progress report (good, bad or different).
I'm a little sad as I won't see my teacher for a while. On the other hand I'm really excited about this next stage of mine and dad's training together 😁😁😁. We can do this πŸ‘πŸ’ͺπŸ€žπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§.
I have to confess it's Simon who writes these posts on my behalf. Hence this may be the last one. Unless I can get some help from my family πŸ€”??
Thanks for reading and wish me luck πŸ‘

Day 39 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words 😁😊.

Another great day's training with my dad and Simon. We met Simon in town centre. I was really pleased to see him, I was a bit silly 😁. I'm allowed to say hi but I mustn't be silly especially in public places. We went to a few places around town. Including the post office and a cafe. We did the scent game when we were walking around. That's really difficult but i did it 😁.
Simon and dad even thought I alerted for real, so much so that he checked his blood sugar levels. He was fine but I was really sure I was correct. I didn't get rewarded πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I heard Simon say to dad. His pocket may be contaminated with the smell of the scent toy. Simon explained and showed dad what to do in future πŸ‘πŸ˜Š. Phewwww there is always something new to learn and remember.
We also went to dad's work place. It's REALLY IMPORTANT i behave nicely there. I was a little silly to start off with as I could sense dad was different. However, I very quickly sorted myself out and was a good boy😁. I think I'm going to like going to work 😊😊😊.
We then had some dog time with Bandit in the park 😁😁😁.
Finally, back at Simon's hotel. Dad's blood sugar levels were low, so we did some real life training. I needed some help as it was the first time I had done this. Both Simon and dad were pleased and I got a treat 😊😊😊.
It's my last day's training with Simon tomorrow. It's then just dad and I alone. He'll be back in a couple of months to test us πŸ™ˆ. Plus if dad needs help he'll be a phone call away πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘.

Thanks for reading.

Day 38 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‰.

What an amazing day I've had with dad and Simon. We kicked off with meeting Simon in town centre. We did the scent game on a bench almost straight away 😁. We then went to a cafe where Simon and dad had a full English breakfast (apparently it's important training πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ). I had to behave nicely, which I did. Dad did the scent game so I was very happy to wait for my treat.
We then took a long road walk to a store. Again I had to behave nicely. Dad did the scent game out of sight of Simon. I think he was trying to be sneaky, but I didn't miss it 😁. Dad was so pleased 😁😁😁😁.
We then met Bandit "yay" and had some dog time in the park 😁😁😁along with a new friend I made.
I thought that was it for the day but oh no we went to Simon's hotel. I was half asleep but they did the scent game again πŸ˜–. Phewwww it was hard but I did it 😁.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the pictures πŸ‘
