French soldiers & Red Cross "Mercy" dogs before departing for the Front - by the west gate of the Tuileries Gardens (Place de la Concorde) - Paris, France. 1915

"Red Cross dogs were vital in helping wounded soldiers during World War I when trench warfare was used. They were normally sent out at night into no man's land (the ground between the two opposing trenches) when the battles were not raging to locate the injured men. Their keen sense of smell and good night vision gave them the advantage of finding soldiers in the dark without bringing much attention to the enemy.

Many breeds were used as Red Cross dogs, also called Mercy dogs, including German shepherds, sheepdogs, Airedale terriers, bloodhounds, retrievers and collies. According to the Red Cross, it was about the character of the dog, not the breed. Before being sent to the battlefields, the dogs were trained under realistic battle conditions. After a few weeks of training, they were ready to serve their country. They knew which soldiers to help by the type of uniform they wore, and they knew to try to help only those who were still alive.

Saddlebags carrying water and first aid equipment were often strapped to the dogs when they went searching for the men. If the dog found a soldier who was not too badly wounded, the soldier could often stabilize his injuries using the medical supplies and then follow the dog back to the trench. If the soldier was unable to walk or was unconscious, the dog would return to his handler bringing back the wounded man's helmet or a piece of his uniform to indicate to their keeper that they had located someone. The dog would then lead a stretcher party to the victim.

It's estimated that there were upwards of 10,000 Red Cross dogs used during the Great War, and they were credited for saving thousands of lives over the course of the war. They were able to locate wounded soldiers in hard to find places such as in thickets and bushes and at the bottom of deep ravines. The dogs would also lead the men to bodies that were thought to be dead but when brought back to the medics they discovered they still had life in them. One surgeon recalled "It is purely a matter of their instinct, which is far more effective than man’s reasoning powers.”

One notable dog belonging to the French army, Prusco, was credited with saving over a hundred men after one battle. Sometimes Prusco would drag a soldier to a safe place from enemy fire before running back to his handler.

Red Cross dogs were true heroes during WWI and will always be remembered for their bravery, intelligence and kind hearts. "

Cut and paste (with permission) from Emma's page. Pippa was supplied and trained by myself a couple of years ago now for her son James.

Pippa was asleep on my bed, I was working at my desk, James was in his room with his bedroom door shut. I had all of James’ alarms switched off on my phone and sure enough, without any clues from the humans or alarms, The Nose twitched, Pippa woke up and told me James was going low; she smelt it from down the hall, through a closed door. She’s amazing ❀️

I've just finished my third one to one dog training consultation via zoom. I hadn't even thought of doing it as I'm not that tech savvy 😁. However, as I've been asked by potential customers. If I can offer it, then hey why not πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The way it works is to send me an email firstly [email protected] with as much background as possible and what you would want to achieve. That way I can plan the session and not waist time asking the same questions. Although please be prepared for questions πŸ‘.

To date via zoom I have worked with two pet dogs and owners, who's dog's let's just say are a little unruly. Plus an owner trained assistance dog who had hit a few training hurdles, and needed some advice.
I can see this being suitable for both domestic and working dogs and budding trainers. Totally confidential and I just love to share knowledge. I'm not saying I'm the solution 100% , but I'll have a dammed good go. Plus I'm not bad at training dogs and dog handlers. Even if I say so myself πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‰

Cost Β£40 for up to one hour if during normal office hours. Β£50 if evenings or weekends.

Day 40 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰.

Today was the last day of my initial training. Tomorrow will be the first day of my continuous training (no pressure) πŸ™ˆ. Dad met Simon in town centre as usual. Silly me I went to the bench where we usually meet him. I said hi to the wrong person πŸ˜‚ Simon was sat on a different bench 😁. We settled quite quickly and a stranger came over. He was VERY CHATTY and a little odd. Neither Simon or dad knew him. I was really good even though the man was silly. I behaved myself and just said hi πŸ˜‰.
We then went to a cafe where I behaved very nicely while dad and Simon had a MASSIVE , which is very important training apparently πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. After they had breakfast dad did the scent game. Which was really easy, but I do like to please them 😁.
I then had my last play with Bandit, ohhh I'll miss him πŸ˜”. I do hope Simon will bring him, when he comes to test us in a couple of months 😁.
Finally, we all went back to my home. Dad did something slightly different. He played the scent game for real. I needed help but got a huge fuss from him (IT WAS AMAZING). It's really important that dad's the only one in the family that does this. Otherwise ill get very confused and fail as an diabetic Alert dog.
Dad and I have been given a set of instructions by Simon, that we must follow to the letter for the next 14 days πŸ™„Phewwww. Then Simon will review our progress. Meanwhile dad has to WhatsApp Simon every third day with a progress report (good, bad or different).
I'm a little sad as I won't see my teacher for a while. On the other hand I'm really excited about this next stage of mine and dad's training together 😁😁😁. We can do this πŸ‘πŸ’ͺπŸ€žπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§.
I have to confess it's Simon who writes these posts on my behalf. Hence this may be the last one. Unless I can get some help from my family πŸ€”??
Thanks for reading and wish me luck πŸ‘

Day 39 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words 😁😊.

Another great day's training with my dad and Simon. We met Simon in town centre. I was really pleased to see him, I was a bit silly 😁. I'm allowed to say hi but I mustn't be silly especially in public places. We went to a few places around town. Including the post office and a cafe. We did the scent game when we were walking around. That's really difficult but i did it 😁.
Simon and dad even thought I alerted for real, so much so that he checked his blood sugar levels. He was fine but I was really sure I was correct. I didn't get rewarded πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I heard Simon say to dad. His pocket may be contaminated with the smell of the scent toy. Simon explained and showed dad what to do in future πŸ‘πŸ˜Š. Phewwww there is always something new to learn and remember.
We also went to dad's work place. It's REALLY IMPORTANT i behave nicely there. I was a little silly to start off with as I could sense dad was different. However, I very quickly sorted myself out and was a good boy😁. I think I'm going to like going to work 😊😊😊.
We then had some dog time with Bandit in the park 😁😁😁.
Finally, back at Simon's hotel. Dad's blood sugar levels were low, so we did some real life training. I needed some help as it was the first time I had done this. Both Simon and dad were pleased and I got a treat 😊😊😊.
It's my last day's training with Simon tomorrow. It's then just dad and I alone. He'll be back in a couple of months to test us πŸ™ˆ. Plus if dad needs help he'll be a phone call away πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘.

Day 38 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‰.

What an amazing day I've had with dad and Simon. We kicked off with meeting Simon in town centre. We did the scent game on a bench almost straight away 😁. We then went to a cafe where Simon and dad had a full English breakfast (apparently it's important training πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ). I had to behave nicely, which I did. Dad did the scent game so I was very happy to wait for my treat.
We then took a long road walk to a store. Again I had to behave nicely. Dad did the scent game out of sight of Simon. I think he was trying to be sneaky, but I didn't miss it 😁. Dad was so pleased 😁😁😁😁.
We then met Bandit "yay" and had some dog time in the park 😁😁😁along with a new friend I made.
I thought that was it for the day but oh no we went to Simon's hotel. I was half asleep but they did the scent game again πŸ˜–. Phewwww it was hard but I did it 😁.

Day 37 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

I was a bit confused last night, training wise. I had so much going on with being my first day at home and was sooooo excited to be back. Simon spent time chatting to dad this morning. They both agreed I was very distracted which is why I didn't alert as I should πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.
Anyways, Simon and dad did some simple scent game training at home this morning. I was very sleepy as I'd had a big day the day before. Simon decided we wouldn't do too much. He gave dad instructions to ensure I rested properly before meeting in town centre after lunch.

This afternoon was much better 😁😁😁. Even though lots of distractions I alerted really well. We did a couple of moving ones which were superb 😁. I heard Simon say to dad he needs to work on his praise voice, so I know I'm a REALLY GOOD BOY.
Tomorrow we are training for the public access test for both dad and I. We can do it 😁πŸ’ͺ.

It's important I get plenty of rest tonight in preparation. I'm still very young.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Yay I'm home I'm so excited!!! Pip wasn't very pleased to see me though 🀭🀭🀭.
After a long drive up from Cardiff. Simon spent quite some time explaining to dad how to work with me. We even gave a demo of the scent game to dad. I think i did really well especially as I was so excited to be home.
Dad's been given some practical home work and Simon will be back in the morning. I know we can do this πŸ’ͺπŸ˜‰πŸΎπŸΎ.

Day 35 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‰

Another great day's training with Simon. We did quite a bit of road walking. Using the new leash that attaches to his belt. I'm really good at walking nicely. While we we're out we met a friend of Simon's in a pub. I had to behave nicely as lot's of people were having dinner. I was very good I didn't try to jump up on anyone to say hi 😁. We even did the scent game while Simon was busy chatting with his friend. Haha he can't catch me out πŸ˜‰. I'm very excited as I'm going home tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to showing my family what I can do. I'm trying to get Simon to play with me right now, we usually do about this time 😁😁😁.

Day 34 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‰

Sadly not too much to report today. We had plans to do training in town. However the rain was very bad. Other than a walk in the park we decided to stay at home. Regardless Simon made use of the time playing the scent game, and being even more sneaky about it.
I have to confess I messed up today. Mr Grumpy Pants (Tyler) gets home made soup as he has trouble pooping 🀭. Simon made him potato, veg and fish soup today (ohhh I love fish). It smelt amazing πŸ˜‹. I couldn't help myself, while Tyler wasn't looking I pinched some πŸ€«πŸ™ˆ. Simon and Tyler caught me in the act, they weren't best pleased. I won't do it again πŸ˜”. I was a bit sheepish for the rest of the day, I am really sorry. He's got lots of patience with me. We have since done the scent game. Now he's watching tele while I'm chewing his toe 🀣🀣🀣.
Last days one to one training tomorrow. Before heading home on Monday. I can't wait to see my family again, but I know I have a week of important training ahead of me. With Simon and my dad 😁.

Day 33 (yesterday) of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

What a busy and fun day. We kicked off with our usual routine of breakfast and a walk. In the local park with Mr Grumpy pants (I think he likes me now😁). He wont play me with me but ohhh boy he can find all the best sniffs πŸ‘.

After settling Tyler at home. We went in the van to Bridgend college. I like it there as lots to see and do. I didn't even try to jump up on anyone. Simon is using the special lead attached to his belt all the time now. We even had lunch in the canteen. Simon queued up like everyone else. I was very good I patiently waited while he was at the hot plate, and paid at the till. All the ladies were saying how hansom I am 😁. One of the dinner ladies offered me a sausage. Simon explained I couldn't have it as I work for treats πŸ™„. I don't mind as I get lots of "healthy treats" in conjunction with the scent game.
Simon had fish, chips and beans. It smelt amazing but I left him alone and laid on the floor. He was very sneaky and did the scent game before he finished eating. I could smell it but wasn't sure if I was supposed to bother him as he was eating. Simon helped me a little and I got a big fuss and a treat 😁. We then spent some time in reception with lots of people coming and going, I was very well behaved.
Then we went shopping "boring" Simon walks very slowly when he's shopping and keeps stopping to look at things. One lady got really excited in a shop when she saw me. I thought about jumping up to say hi but I didn't. I heard Simon say to her. You can say hi but don't make a big fuss of him please as he's in training. She understood and actually thanked him for taking the time to explain what my job will be πŸ˜πŸ‘. It seems lot's of this is team work. I hope Simon trains dad how to do it properly, I'm sure he will πŸ’ͺ🀞.
After shopping we went to see Simon's mum and my pal Bandit. We all went for a walk together. Wow that was fun Jack the black lab came to, he doesn't like me so I just played with Bandit. I also met a new dog he was very small and very cheeky. It's important I get to play and mix with other dogs. All work and no play makes Teddy a very dull boy 🀭🀭🀭.
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the pictures 😊

Days 31 and 32 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜‰πŸ˜πŸΎπŸΎ

We've had a busy couple of day's with one thing and another. Yesterday was a horrible wet day so we decided to stay at home for most of it. Simon had stuff to do on the computer. I made sure I was close to him just incase he did the scent game when I wasn't expecting it. Needless to say he did it a few times throughout the day. He even did it and ignored me when I was alerting. He got up and walked about the house. I knew he was trying to trick me. I didn't give up I kept trying to get in his way by blocking and nudging him. When I could I would try and jump up. This went on for a good 15 minutes (I can even tell the time now πŸ˜‰). Eventually I heard the click of the treat pot and Simon was really silly with me. He's so funny when I get it right 😁.
Today we had a very early start. We went to a really special place that I'm not to talk about 🀫. Simon was hosting some training for lots of bomb dogs. I'm so impressed with them. I got to see lots of dogs and handlers. I had to behave very nicely. Ofcourse we did the scent game with loads of distractions around me.
Apparently, we are going to be training hard over the next few days. In preparation for returning home and training with my dad. I hope I do well, I really do enjoy pleasing Simon😁. Sorry for the lack of pictures, blame Simon πŸ˜‰.

Day 30 (yesterday) of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜‰πŸΎπŸΎ.

Wow Simon has certainly upped my training today. He increased the difficulty, the duration, the distance and the distractions. He calls it the 4Ds πŸ€”.
He has been playing the scent game when lots was going on around us. Even when we are on the move which is really hard. We have been using the special lead attached to Simon's belt. This will help my dad in work as he'll be able to have both hands free. Simon has made a point of giving me very little voice commands. I just look out for when I need to get up or move about when he does. We're quite good at it. I know where to put myself so as not to be in the way. We spent a good 8 hours in town training. Rest assured he made sure I got some dog time in the grounds of . That was fun. I'm getting better every day. I know I'm just starting off. The hard work with my dad is yet to come. Simon says I'm bound to be confused to start off with. As long as we take it slowly and reduce the 4Ds then slowly increase at my pace we will be fine 😁. Regardless, he will be supporting us the whole way 😁🐾🐾.

Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‰.

With all the excitement of going camping with Bandit. I totally forgot how clever I was on Friday. Simon went to the barbers again. No idea why but he must be malting loads, he's bald πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.
Anyways Simon did the scent game, mid clip!! I got it right without any help. I wasn't sure what to do as he was sat up high and busy. I paced around slightly then nudged his legs a few times. He seemed happy with that as I heard the click of the treat container and got a treat. He didn't make a big fuss as he was busy. That's ok though I got my treat, and could sense he was pleased with me 😁🐾🐾. Thanks for reading.

Trainee (Medical Alert Dog) Teddy. We've been very busy today. Pushing the boundaries slightly training and duration wise.
The reality for me as his trainer this evening and for his owner / handler when he returns home next week. He's clearly not on standby mode he's in a deep sleep. He won't be alerting on any changes in blood sugar levels. These dog's are an amazing addition for people with . However they are not the solution simply another layer of security. We must remember they are dogs at the end of the day. While they are asleep, at rest, playing , pooping, peeing, dealing with distractions, hungry, thirsty bla bla bla they are not focused on the job at hand. I train for perfection but we / I MUST take into consideration they are living breathing dogs that have needs. Sleep well Teddy you deserve it buddy πŸ‘.

Day 29 of Teddy's DAAD training diary. In his own words πŸ˜πŸ˜‰πŸΎπŸΎ

We spent most of the day at Simon's home. He was very busy doing stuff about the house. He likes me to follow him around his home. Where he goes I go 😁. He's trying to make the scent game more difficult by moving about when we are playing it. It's not easy when the scent and Simon are moving around the place, but I'm getting better. This afternoon we went to a new park it was massive. I like going to different places with lots of new sniffs. Mr Grumpy pants (Tyler) came too. It was very windy and raining but still great fun. I decided I wouldn't pester Tyler today instead I stayed by him and just followed his lead sniff wise. He's very good at finding the best sniffs πŸ‘. Simon did an experiment with the scent. He expected it to be too hard for me at this stage of my training and he was right. Needless to say when we got back to the van he made it simpler for me, so we could get a positive fun finish. He was very pleased he's so funny when I get it right. I love to please him and ofcourse get a treat 😁🐾🐾.
