Anvilstone Dog Training Dog training specialist based near Kirkby Lonsdale in Lancashire, UK. We are 5 star council approved accredited breeders of GWPs and Drahthaar’s.

Located in the southern Lake District near the small market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, Anvilstone dog training is based on a sheep farm on the side of a limestone fell. Privately owned rolling fields, meadows, and rivers give way to fellside and felltop vistas, all perfect for different types of dog training and dog handling. Further North, we have 100 acres of mature woodland, with a 10 acre lake

for cooling dogs off. The farmhouse, dog barn and kennels are set in the midst of our own grounds, with almost 1000 acres of fellside immediately accessible from our fields. The location, with the variety of habitats is perfect for training all types, shapes and sizes of dogs, in almost any discipline, whether it’s general obedience, lead pulling, search work, deer stalking, gun dog work, dog/people aggression, confidence building, or focus training. Anvilstone dog training is also home to the well known Anvilstone wire haired pointer gun-dogs. We have a holiday cottage opposite the farmhouse so if you want to bring your dog, leave them with us for training whilst you relax, or come out and work with your dog and Ian then it works well for them and you. The kennels, farm and cottage are all owned and run by Ian and Sue. Sue runs the cottage and admin, whilst Ian, who has 20 years experience in breeding, training and working wire haired pointers and has a level 3 qualification in training people, runs the dog and human training facility. We work on high quality, small numbers, and total customer satisfaction in everything we do.

"Me and my 'runaway' canine companion had a great time training with Ian at Anvilstone. Ian has to be your ultimate dog whisperer, but with a great skill in‘human’ whispering too. He is very knowledgeable, calm and had a great capacity to instil confidence in me and Bigs (dog).

I was amazed at what could be achieved in a relatively short time, I think the ‘immersive’ nature of the training was a significant component. I would highly recommend him and the Anvilstone set up.

It is, of course, still work in progress, not sure Bigs has entirely lost his penchant for duck, but I now know that ultimately he can and will. It was an extremely rewarding experience working with Ian.

Struggling with a dog sours the relationship and this experience potentially changes all that.All done in a beautiful location, with high class snacks! Cant recommend it highly enough. Thank you Ian."

⭐️ HAPPY CUSTOMER REVIEW ⭐️

"Luna my 3yr old, small cross breed from Romania has had a tough start in life. I fostered then adopted her after she was signed over to a rescue centre last year. She is a lovely companion but has always been nervous of certain breeds of dog & new people. I was becoming concerned that our life together was going to be very difficult. However one session with Ian has turned that all around for the better. I stood & watched Ian put Luna through some intense training which included clear, down to earth, explanations of what I need to do going forward. I was so happy to see her responding so well.

Now it’s over to me to keep it going. It was a lot to take in but the change has been incredible. I have more confidence & our walks have been amazing. My regular dog buddies have all noticed the difference, especially those with dogs Luna wasn’t keen on. No more avoidance tactics on my part & no reactive behaviour from Luna. I can’t thank Ian enough for sharing his time & experience to help Luna & me. I will be keeping up Ian’s good work, it’s been a game changer for me & Luna.

I would highly recommend Anvilstone Dog Training."

“This is a (very) delayed review as it was September when Ruby spent a week with Ian and husband Carl joined for 2 days. Like many of the dogs that go to Anvilstone her recall was sketchy, given the chance she would chase sheep and overall her engagement was poor. Off lead times were very few and far between and there was little fun to be had walking her.

It was hard to believe the difference that could be made in a week. Since September off lead walks are the norm, as the photo shows this is her happy place with open moorland and sheep just behind her. She has had several successful shoot days and gone from being an off lead menace to a pleasure to walk. The only regret I have is that I didn’t go to Ian sooner. If you are wondering if it is worth it I can say without doubt that it is”

This is Tara a 5 year old GWP with a short attention span and although she has acceptable heel work, recall, sit and generally ok obedience there was room for improvement.

“As a typical GWP she was always pushing the boundaries. She also was a worry around sheep. So we went to Ian in Kirkby Lonsdale who has tremendous empathy with dogs and a wealth of experience in dog training.

By day three we were able to walk her off the lead in a field of sheep getting as close as 10 metres away which was quite remarkable. We thoroughly recommend Ian if you are having issues with a GWP or any breed for that matter. We can now enjoy Tara and she now has more freedom”
