I'm sponsoring a class at the Kite Events show jumping competition this Sunday!

As well as the cute orange rosette, I've put together a little bag of goodies for the winner - mostly hoof related!

Good luck everyone 🏆

Second trim (with me) for Mollie, Bruce and Peanut ♡

The health of their feet has improved SO much since the last time...and so has their behaviour/anxiety.

Hats off to their owners for putting in the work between trims so they don't find it as difficult or scary 🥰

Star is a new client who currently has front shoes on, but has to be sedated each time as she is so terrified of anything that might resemble a farrier!

Her owner wants to take her barefoot, so I went today to meet them both - for Star to meet me without anything stressful happening, and to formulate a plan.

She is certainly very suspicious, and anxious about what could happen to her :( she even spooked at the lickit I'd offered for us to make friends 🙈
I did some groundwork with her and managed to pick up all her feet and trim the bars. So I think we will be able to get there with her eventually...slow and steady 🙏💓

I left her owner with an old rasp to try and get her used to the tools, and she's going to look more into hoofboots so we have them ready for when her front shoes come off ♡♡

This morning I went out to 4 ponies who haven't had regular hoofcare most of their lives as far as I understand. Their previous owner actually trimmed their feet himself when he felt they got too long (with a saw apparently!)
His children have now inherited the ponies and wanted to start getting things back on track for them ♡

Although their feet were incredibly overgrown, they are actually incredibly healthy! Likely down to their environment - living out in a fairly big field with hay out when needed and no hard feeds, no rugging...not a lot of interference at all.

Hopefully the new owners can keep up with a more regular trims...as leaving their feet that overgrown for too long would eventually have an effect on the body.

In the right picture the HPA (hoof/pastern angle) is aligned in both...but obviously the top pic is horrendously long! And you can see the effect that is having on the leg sloping backwards. Compared with the bottom photo how much more upright the whole hoof and leg are. Shortening breakover to where it's meant to be will take strain off the leg/joints/tendons etc... and allow the heamodynamics to work properly - which will assist with shock absorption and stimulating the health of the structures inside the foot.

What a satisfying morning! 👌

📣I'm now a Red Horse Products stockist📣

I have used these products for many years and have found them to be amazing for a range of hoof/body issues with my own horses over the years. I use them on client's horses as well, so it makes sense to stock the products I am recommending!

Will be placing my first order this week, so feel free to take a look at their website and let me know if you need anything 🙌

Saw a new client called Dee today. Her owner had to remove her shoes herself before she could get someone out...and a few of the nails were still stuck in the hoof wall.

Managed to get most of them out, but one was stuck in there with nothing for me to grip onto. I'm sure it will grow out, so her owner will keep an eye until her next trim ♡

People told Gemma she shouldn't take her TB barefoot. Well Ginny's feet have only improved since her shoes came off (top pics), and she's been sound the whole time...which is the main thing! ❤️

Lily had an abscess in August, which she found so painful. Although the abscess burst and healed quite quickly...she hasn't felt able to let me trim her front feet since. She let me do her backs with no issues, but was so protective of her fronts. She let me pick one up just long enough to trim the bars and that was it. After that she would lunge forward, strike out, rear and spin. And let me tell you there is no hanging on to an 18hh shire's feet if they don't want you to 🥹

I went 3 times to try and trim her fronts since as she was overdue...but she wasn't having any of it. We recieved some unsolicited advice of using a twitch, or hitting her 🫠 Which I'm pleased to say her owners did not entertain ♡
We opted instead for positive reinforcement and calmers.
It may have been 11 weeks since her last trim, and 3 or 4 attempts, but today she let me do all 4 feet without much of an issue at all 🤩
If I'd taken the advice of using aversives I'm pretty sure we would be in a much worse situation than we are in now.

So grateful to Lily's family for working with me in this way, and especially her 'Dad' - who isn't a horsey person himself, but seems to be the Lily whisperer as he has created such a good bond with her the past year 😍

Trimming Polo's feet for the past year has been an absolute labour of love ♡

Seeing the positive changes month after month, but not wanting to be too hasty with the before and after photos 😅 and him being such a gentleman for his pedicures ❤️

The top photos on each grid were the front feet in Dec 2023, and the bottom photos were the front feet yesterday.
Look how much the heels and frog have decontracted - how much wider and fuller the frog is! The deep central sulcus is turning more into the shallow thumb print it's supposed to be. This indicates that from proper balance, and the heamodynamics and lymphatics able to work as they should, the inside of the foot (digital cushion etc) is becoming healthier.

The feet before were super long with the heels, toes and frogs all running forward. Now it's all collected up and more underneath him - which will be helping his elderly bones cope with every step ♡

The quality of the hoofwall now is really good - before it was thin and almost crumbling away, with lots of event lines, stretch in the white line and false, flat soles. He now has a nice thick, strong hoofwall, event lines growing out, better integrity at the sole/wall junction, and a much healthier sole with some concavity!
The whole angle and shape of the feet are so much better and indicative of a healthier foot on the inside.

I think these feet will continue to improve, especially with some light exercise. And at his age (I think around 25?), it goes to show it's never too late to pull those shoes!

Had a new client today called Gully. Annoyingly the photos are a bit wonky as he was a bit of a fidget 😆

He has pretty strong, healthy feet on the whole...but the toes have been left too distal (low) for a long time, which caused the feet and frogs to run forward.
Should be able to collect them up with regular balanced trims 👌

I spent the last 2 days at the annual conference 👌

I drove up to Milton Keynes with Pepper on Monday night and settled into the air bnb.
Got up early the next day to walk Pepper and then she stayed in our room while I went to the first part of the conference. Checked on her at lunchtime and she was happily sleeping 😄

There were talks from such interesting professionals in the world of horse health and wellbeing - with the focus on working together to solve issues from a 'whole horse' perspective. I learned so much, and it was beneficial to be amongst so many EP's and hearing their thoughts on certain topics.

We got a goody bag from .... and I won a prize of in the raffle 😍

Lots of beautiful walks with Pepper down the canal tow path and across the gorgeous countryside, plus a very tasty gnocci dinner at the local pub.

Thank you for having me EPA! It was very much worth the trip, and I hope to make it next year too :)

He's usually a bit of a fidget, so I got him some tasty hay today in a net and he was much more patient!
I like them to have a positive experience so prefer to distract with things they like, rather than anything too negative 💓

Very satisfying before and after on this super overgrown foot today.
The sole was falling off in my hands!

Bit of thrush around the frog where everything had got so long, so we treated that and with more regular trims now Bee should be feeling more comfy in no time ♡

Wow...I hadnt even realised how much Reens' feet were improving!

I had always thought her feet didn't look quite right, and used to ask my EP but I didn't know how to explain what I was seeing/asking. I thought they looked 'long' and the frogs didn't look particularly healthy.
She'd always had really thick hoof wall and was known for having the better feet out of my girls (Dees were SO unhealthy!!).

I don't have many before photos, but I managed to find this one on the cloud from June 2023.

Look how contracted her frog was - long and thin with a small line in the middle instead of the nice 'thumb print' cleft she's supposed to have (that's starting to show in today's photo!). Her frog is now filling the gap between the heels, and will be properly stimulating the digital cushion inside...which will help with shock absorption and dampening during the stride.
Her toes were too long before - I think the whole foot was running forward - but they have definitely started to come back in the past year as well - which will give a better break over.
All integral for the correct movement of blood through the foot when she walks (haemodynamics).
There was separation between the sole and hoof wall before, but that's improving as well.

All in all a much healthier foot ♡
