Letting your cat out for the day?

Without a cat flap or shady shelter, they could be stuck outside in the heat until you get home☀️

Ensure they have a cool place to rest, water available, and ideally a way to get back indoors.

🩸 Pet Blood Bank Donors Needed 🩸

Just as there is a human blood service, the Pet Blood Bank UK exists to help save the lives of pets in need, by providing a blood service for vets.

At Woodcroft Vets, we support them by hosting a donation session, where you can bring your dog to donate some much-needed blood. The blood is then taken to their processing centre in Loughborough where it is separated into different products. It is then stored and sent out to vets when they need it. Often coming back to Woodcroft Vets for our patients.

Pet Blood Bank operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure blood is always available. They help to save the lives of thousands of dogs every year.

What dogs can donate?

For your dog to be a blood donor, they must meet certain criteria. Your dog’s welfare is always their top priority and so for them to become a lifesaver, they must be:

🩸 Fit and healthy
🩸 Between one and eight years old
🩸 Weigh more than 25kg
🩸 Confident and enjoy meeting new people
🩸 Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
🩸 Not on any medication

If this sounds good and you’d like to join PBB's lifesaving pack, follow this link to sign up your dog as a donor -

Inquisitive noses and buzzing bees don’t always mix!

If your dog gets stung by a bee or wasp, here’s what to do:

🐝 Remove the sting (if visible) by gently scraping it out with a bank card or something similar — don’t use tweezers, as they can squeeze more venom in.

🐝 Soothe the area with a cold compress or clean cloth soaked in cold water.

🐝 Watch for signs of a serious reaction, such as: – Swelling, especially around the mouth, throat or eyes – Vomiting or diarrhoea – Trouble breathing – Weakness or collapse

📞 If your pet shows any of these signs, or is stung on the face, inside the mouth or throat, call your vet right away - reactions can develop quickly and be serious.

Even mild stings can be painful, so always monitor your pet closely and contact your vet if you’re unsure.

🐾 Found a Stray Dog? Here’s What to Do 🐾

We know how upsetting it can be to find a lost dog, and many of you bring them straight to Woodcroft Vets out of kindness — thank you for caring. 💙

However, we’re currently seeing a high number of stray dogs brought to us without first contacting the local dog warden, and we kindly need your help in following the correct legal steps.

📞 What to do if you find a stray dog:
✨ By law, stray dogs should be reported to your local council’s dog warden in the first instance— they’re responsible for collecting and caring for them under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

✨ If you know who the owner is, feel free to return the dog directly.

✨ Unless the dog is sick or injured, please avoid bringing healthy strays to the vet first, as we are not the legal authority for handling them.

🩺 How we can help:
✅ We’re happy to scan for a microchip
✅ We’ll try to contact the owner if we find any details
✅ We’ll always provide treatment if the dog is unwell or injured

That said, for healthy dogs, your first call should always be the dog warden.

📍 Who to contact:
📌 Stockport postcodes: 0161 474 4181
📌 Manchester postcodes: 0161 234 5000
📌 East Cheshire postcodes: 0300 123 5021

If you can’t reach the dog warden, Manchester Dogs Home (Harpurhey, M9 5PG) 0300 102 1212 may be able to help. And of course, feel free to give us a call for advice — we’ll do our best to guide you.

ℹ️ A few helpful facts:
🐶 Councils will hold a collected stray for 7 days before rehoming (if unclaimed)
🏡 If you keep a found dog at home, you must inform the dog warden and hold it for 28 days — the original owner can still claim their pet during this time
⚖️ Only local councils have the legal responsibility to collect and register stray dogs

We understand how much you care — we do too. 💙
Following these steps helps ensure that every dog is safely reunited with their family or rehomed properly, while also keeping all of our patients safe.

Thank you for your continued kindness and support! 🐾
