🌿 Foxtail Season 🌿
Foxtails are incredibly dangerous to dogs and, unfortunately, they are absolutely everywhere at the moment. They catch onto your dog's fur, or become inhaled during sniffing/panting, and dig in deeper with movement. These barbed plants then imbed into their system, where they cannot be broken down. This risks swelling, absesses, pain, and, in some cases, death.
It is so important that you take proactive steps during walks, such as:
👉 Keep an eye on pavements for foxtails
👉 Call your dog away when they head to foxtail patches
👉 Leave a space if foxtails are unavoidable and walk elsewhere
👉 Comb over your dog immediately after they walk through foxtails
👉 Double-check your dog again after a walk
It is essential that you remove any foxtails you see on your dog's fur or in their pawpads, and dispose of them safely. Due to their barbed shape, they will not come off on their own. If you are in doubt as to whether you have fully removed a foxtail from your dog, speak with your vet.

A busy couple of weeks here at Pooch&Whiskers with some familiar faces and also some new ones! At this time of year and the warmer weather approaching Adders are now out of hibernation, so you may come across them whilst out on your dog walks!
The European Adder is the only one that is venomous, and that is a potential danger to your dog
Adders are not known for their aggression. They will only bite in self-defence, and this can be a problem for curious dogs that come across them when they’re bounding about.
Adders love the sun and can often be spotted basking in the sun in woodland, heathland, and moors. Naturally shy creatures, they’re best left alone, and they’ll do no harm.
The most common place for an adder to bite a dog is the face or the legs. If your dog is bitten, you will usually notice an immediate swelling. If you look carefully, you may be able to spot two small puncture wounds at the centre of the bite.
The swelling can quickly become severe, especially if the dog has an allergic reaction to the venom, which can result in breathing issues. Other signs could include:
✔️ Lameness
✔️ Bleeding and bruising
✔️ Howling (in pain)
✔️ Your dog may suddenly appear very nervous
If you suspect that your dog has been bitten by an adder, you should take them to your vet immediately. Adder bites can be severe but are rarely fatal in dogs. However, they can make a dog very ill and should be treated as an emergency.

Good morning all, I wanted to write a little post to introduce myself as the face behind Pooch & Whiskers of Cheltenham.
Firstly, welcome to my page, and thank you for the follow and share 😊
I'm Liz, I have lived in Cheltenham all of my life and know the town well. After years of cleaning a variety of houses in cheltenham, I went on to become a housekeeper for a dog boarding and daycare business, Bark and Call, I then went on to help out with the dogs with a bit of dog sitting to begin with, this is when my love for dogs was rediscovered. Over time, I worked more with the daily dog care and would help run the business when the owners took a well-deserved holiday.
My love for dogs grew even more when I bought Luna home as a puppy. She really helped me in so many ways when times were hard. I had the joy and privilege over the crazy time of lockdowns to experience 2 litters of puppies with Luna, which was amazing, and all 11 puppies have gone to wonderful loving homes, including Willow who is my Fiancé's cheeky slipper stealing pup.
In 2022, I had to take some time off to have 2 major operations, which left me out of action for 18 months, but I'm now back and fitter than ever getting back to what I love.
I'm excited to meet new dogs, but also cats and other small furry friends that need my service.
