Some obedience training with these two. This 6 month old Springer has some behavioural issues with jumping up. This is easy to manage and train out but can be detrimental if not worked with. Ignoring the jumping up by turning your back to show he gets nothing for doing this, rewarding with high value treats when he doesn't jump up when he usually would. Dogs watch your body language closely and build positive associations with treats, making them understand desirable behaviours and discouraging unwanted behaviours!

🌞 Walking Dogs in Hot Weather: Tips and Reminders for summer incoming!

1. Choose the Right Time: Walk your dog during the coolest parts of the day, typically early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.

2. Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. Offer frequent water breaks during the walk to prevent dehydration. Or even better take your pup to the river or somewhere to have a doggy paddle.

3. Check the Temperature: Avoid walking your dog when temperatures exceed 85°F (29°C), as pavement and sidewalks can become dangerously hot and burn your dog's paw pads. The best tip is to hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds to gauge how hot the floor is.

4. Stay in the Shade: Whenever possible, walk your dog in shaded areas to minimize exposure to direct sunlight and reduce the risk of overheating.

5. Protect Paw Pads: Consider using paw wax or protective booties to shield your dog's paw pads from hot surfaces.

6. Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion: Be vigilant for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, and weakness. If your dog shows any of these signs, stop the walk immediately and seek shade and water.

7. Shorten Walks: During hot weather, opt for shorter walks to reduce the risk of overheating and exhaustion.

8. Know Your Dog's Limits: Some dogs are more sensitive to heat than others, especially brachycephalic breeds (e.g., Bulldogs, Pugs). Know your dog's limitations and adjust your walking routine accordingly.

It's pancake day tomorrow! Aka shrove Tuesday, originally it was the last chance for a treat before 40 days of fasting, and also an opportunity to use up food that couldn't be eaten during Lent. Pancakes are probably my favourite food, I love making savoury ones although my partner thinks it's weird. I know I'm not the only one!

Why not make some pet friendly pancakes? They should be celebrating too!

Here's a simple and delicious dog-friendly pancake recipe:

**Banana and Peanut Butter Dog Pancakes:**

Ingredients:

- 1 ripe banana
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (make sure it does not contain xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs)
- 1/4 cup rolled oats (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- Coconut oil or non-stick cooking spray for greasing the pan

Method:

1. In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe banana until smooth.

2. Add the egg and peanut butter to the mashed banana and mix until well combined.

3. If using, stir in the rolled oats and cinnamon to the batter for added texture and flavor.

4. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease with coconut oil or non-stick cooking spray.

5. Spoon the pancake batter onto the skillet, using about 1-2 tablespoons of batter for each pancake.

6. Cook the pancakes for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

7. Once cooked, remove the pancakes from the skillet and allow them to cool slightly before serving to your dog.
8. Serve the pancakes plain or with a dollop of peanut butter or a drizzle of honey for extra flavor.

When I adopted Elsie she was a very nervous and fearful girl, even being in a house was all new for her. With lots of patience and work, she's a different dog today. It took a careful introduction for these two, she got quite protective of her space and garden, here's a short video I caught of them playing together. She loves this baby spaniel now and the positive interactions with him really shine through. I love watching her jump around and continue to learn that the world is not such a scary place.

Any other bird lovers out there? I've had quail for a number of years, Coturnix, Button and Californian quail. As well as pigeons, finches and parrots! While my aviary today is looking quieter due to other commitments, I've had some amazing birds over the years. All with their own unique personalities.
