Another beach day for Finn to try and keep his spirits up. I keep telling him that his special person is out there somewhere, they just have to be 😕 don’t they? He has started to become reluctant to get back in the car at the end of a walk, I don’t think he wants the fun to end as he lives for these moments 😔 He had a lovely time, the beach really is his happy place, but sadly we had to eventually go back to kennels. His gourmet lickimat helped but paying another £1300 off his kennel bill left me without an appetite.

Another lovely teatime trip to the beach for our Mr Finn 🥰 He loves his freedom and being able to run with his buddies so much and really is a pleasure to take out. I am immensely proud of how far this little chap has come. Somebody please adopt him so he can do this everyday 🙏

It is now 6 long months since Finn arrived back in kennels and we are sadly, no closer to him finding his forever home 😔 It’s just so disappointing that there are so many capable people out there that could offer him that perfect home and help him but he is constantly passed by.

Finn is so much happier than when he first arrived, although he may still have some niggles that need work, we know from experience that in the correct environment and with patience and training these can be fixed. Unfortunately these issues are hard, if not impossible to work through in kennels so we’re kinda stuck.

Finn is a fabulous little dog who we are all tremendously fond of. He is a cheeky little chap that has a sense of humour and loves to make you laugh, he is loving and affectionate, extremely clever, eager to learn, ridiculously fast and never seems to tire. He would make an exceptional agility dog if he was given the chance. If you gain Finn’s trust he will give you his all.

Finn CANNOT spend the rest of his life in kennels, it is not financially possible for us and most importantly it is not fair on Finn. He has so much to give and a world of things he could achieve but that is only possible in a permanent home with an experienced person who is willing to work with him.

6 months is an eternity to any dog, they have such short lives and he is already, statistically speaking, a third of the way through his life. For a young kelpie in his prime to be kennelled without a job to do is just wrong.

Please 🙏 if you are a canine professional in search of a project dog, consider Finn.

This is a compilation video of what he got up to this past week 🥰

Yesterday Finn and his buddies had a little road trip to North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 We visited and spent a lovely afternoon on a beach beach that I have passed many times and always always wanted to visit. There were very few people and dogs but just enough so I could test out his reaction and recall. He was absolutely perfect, he ignored people and dogs, interestingly wanted to go and see some children but recalled away beautifully 🥰 He spent his afternoon stalking, herding and chasing Barry but every now and then would come and check in with me and give me a lick and a cuddle. At 4pm he seemed keen to leave, so we made our way back to the car for a drink and were on our way. He travels well in his crate now with minimum fuss and noise and had stopped destroying the blankets. I did notice that whenever we slowed down or were stopped in traffic he’d bark 🤔 It wasn’t until we arrived back at kennels that I realised that 4pm is when they get their evening meal and Finn’s tummy clock was reminding him that he was hungry and was late for his tea. He was obviously telling me to hurry up 😂

Today Finn went to the beach! He’s being doing so well and the time finally felt right to introduce him to some sort of public life again. I knew the perfect spot where we would have a huge amount of space, where we could avoid people and other dogs to make sure he didn’t become overwhelmed. Finn was so excited to feel the salty wind in his fur and enjoyed his usual shenanigans with Barry.

21 weeks exactly in kennels now for Mr Finn and he is much improved but still on the road to recovery. We’ve gone from a very mixed up, mistrustful and bitey Finn, who would throw himself at the bars if anyone even dared to walk past his kennel, to a more chilled out Finn who has accepted that his kennel is his safe space and nobody is going to bother him. He has even started to let other people into his kennel so they can feed him.

When he first arrived he hated his kennel and was very reluctant to go in. He was very miserable and confused and had pretty much stopped eating (although I think part of the reason for this was self regulation because of the lack of exercise). He also wasn’t interested in treats at all, not even high value treats that were previously his favourites. Bizarrely though he managed to keep and even put on weight. The only time he seemed to be happy was when he could run free in the paddock, especially if there was someone to run with.

Due to his history Finn is not a fan of confined spaces and can become very panicky, this is where things become tricky and he will then resource guard. We’ve worked on this and he now graciously jumps into the crate in the car because he knows he we’re off somewhere exciting.

During his stay he has befriended other Kelpie Welfare dogs that have found themselves in kennels, even the one that didn’t like other dogs ended up being best buddies with Finn! We are now at a point where he goes out to an empty open field with his friends for an afternoon of fun like a regular dog. I never worry about his recall, it is spot on, and he is always up for a race through some long grass or having a cheeky dip in a grotty puddle or river .

I am immensely proud of how far this little guy has come, he’s not perfect and still has his quirks and quite a way to go, but he’s certainly making great progress in the right direction.

Although Finn is now happier in kennels it is not what we want for him at all, and if Finn could tell us he would say so too. He is a very energetic, busy boy who is highly intelligent and wonderfully loving, he is wasted in kennels. He should be somewhere where he has a job to do, he’d make an outstanding sports dog as he is as fast as a bullet, and is eager to learn and please. We know he is a good lad and can fit in, you only have to scroll down to see how well he did with Jem in rehab foster with her, it just has to be the right home and fit for Finn. Ideally he needs an experienced or even expert owner, someone who isn’t afraid when he gets it wrong and who will guide him and be patient with him. He needs someone who will stay on top of his training, give him a purpose in life and that will love him for who he is. I guarantee he will repay you 100 fold.

⚠️ UPDATE ⚠️

Finn has been back with us now for nearly 5 weeks and as far as any progress and rehabilitation goes we are stuck 😞

Finn only trusts one person to take care of him and only lets KWL (Kelpie Welfare Lady) go into his kennel, clean it, take his lead, harness and coat on and off and hand feed him. Kennels is not his favourite place as he finds it too busy (with humans) and doesn’t like people approaching his kennel even when they are just passing by. He’s very limited there as to what we can do with him and achieve and whilst we are very grateful that we have such an amazing and accommodating team of people at the kennels they are a private boarding kennels and not a rehabilitation centre, it is not fair on them or Finn to ask them to cope indefinitely.

We know Finn can do this, he proved this in his last foster home where he was exceptionally happy, but it is going to take a very special someone who will listen to him, is brave and can pick up on his virtually non existent warnings, not be put off by his outbursts and work with him 24hours a day in a calm, confident and kind way.

Finn enjoys the company of other dogs very much and has previously lived with other dogs. He loves to run, play with and herd them, can live with a confident cat if introduced correctly and can ‘eventually’ accept more than one person in his life but he needs to start again from scratch and have his confidence and trust built up again without . He is only going to achieve this in a home where he never has to move again or a rehabilitation facility.

There has to be someone out there that can help Finn, we refuse to believe he is beyond help. He was happy and can be happy again.

He’s 3.5 years old and in his prime so he has the rest of his life to live and enjoy.

Somebody please HELP HIM!!

UPDATE: ON HOMETRIAL 🙏🤞🐾

A sad announcement and a plea for help 🙏

Last week we sadly saw our Fantasctic Mr Finn being returned to us. Like his lovely owners and the ones before that, we are absolutely devastated for him but there are still some issues that he is still struggling with and that need to be sorted out, it was the best decision for all concerned.

I am really hoping we can get Finn to where he needs to be but I am finding it very difficult with so many dogs in kennels long term and not being able to function efficiently due to a really lengthy and bad bout of sciatica on top of my other debilitating health issues. Next week we should start work with our trainer but Finn is really struggling with not having enough to do in kennels.

He’s an exceptionally busy boy that needs a fine balance of physical and mental activity but also quality rest, which just isn’t happening in kennels as he’s finding it stressful. Finn can be claustrophobic and panics within an enclosed space which causes him to resource guard. This can be with anything he feels is important to him his space, the car, food, person etc. He can escalate very quickly, has subtle warnings and he has bitten frequently.

He is a very intelligent and loving boy and has a wicked sense of humour but finds it very difficult to trust, especially if someone is apprehensive and nervous of him, which can cause a very tense chain of events. I realise this is painting a very dark picture of Finn but whoever takes him on must go into this with their eyes open and a plan.
Finn needs a saviour, a highly experienced person who is confident, patient, understanding and kind. Someone who will give Finn a job to do and who will work on his fears. We know 100% that this is achievable because he became extremely happy and settled when he was in foster with Jem for all those months last year.

He needs to stay with that special person forever because I’m not sure he could stand yet another move. He has been a Kelpie Welfare dog since he was 9 months old, if you include his breeder, owners, foster carers and kennels then he has moved homes 9 times, this is too much and not suprising that it has eroded his trust. I want to make it clear that this is nobody’s fault and some dogs can cope better than others, but it has to stop before he’s beyond repair and he gives up on humans all together.

I’m appealing to anyone out there who is up to the job and wants to take on a project dog, Finn needs you!! For his one big problem (resource guarding) he has a dozen wonderful qualities. With the right person he will become an incredible dog that is capable of great things, he just needs some very clear boundaries and a handler who is experienced with resource guarding. He cannot stay in kennels forever so we are praying for a miracle 😕🙏
