When clipping regularly, it’s important for me to wear something that keeps me comfortable and protected from the hair at all times.

The clipping mask I use is from Clipit Grooming doesn’t just stop the uncomfortable feeling of getting hairs up my nose and in my eyes, but it also ensures I don’t inhale the hairs and dust from the horses clipped coats which can eventually lead to lung issues.

I pair it with my personalised clipping suit, which keeps me cool and comfortable and hair free….(and it’s free advertising for my business too!) 🐴🩷

Don’t apologise for your cheap boots, borrowed saddles, your rescue pony or the hand-me-down jodphurs. We didn’t fall in love with comparing ourselves with everyone else….we fell in love with the four legged creatures that makes us forget anyone else exists. 🩷

Today I had the pleasure of clipping Travis from Blackgrounds Equine 💈

Travis has never been clipped before and has been unsure about the sound of clippers in the past, so I took my time and gave him lots of fuss (and hay!) and he stood like a dream. 🧡🤍

It’s all about confidence and a positive experience with young or nervous types and Travis surprisingly loved his clipping experience, which is great going forward. Well done Trav 👏🏻

Travis was clipped using my Liveryman Harmony Plus which is quiet and less vibrations for a more relaxing experience.

Types of clips…..

There are lots of clips to choose from. You should choose a clip that is based on the horses workload and/or any health issues. A horse in full work would probably need a Full clip or a Hunter clip so they don’t sweat too much when exercised. When they sweat with a full coat of fluff, they then become cold and it can take a while for them to dry off afterwards too making rugging impossible for up to an hour. Consider too if they live out or are stabled at night, how much they sweat during exercise or even some are clipped for health reasons like Cushing’s or even those prone to lice.

You can also vary the clips, there are no rules! Some of my clients ask for a chaser clip with a full neck for example, as they want them warm but they sweat too much with only half a neck taken off. Some want a half head or a full head or even the head to be left on altogether. Some want their legs off with a trace clip if they don’t exercise much but have cobby feathers which are a lot to maintain. Go for it!

Just remember the important parts:
⭐️ Bath them prior to a clip and make sure they are 100% dry
⭐️ Ensure they have the correct weight rugs to put on afterwards
⭐️ Make sure they are clipped using the correct length blades
⭐️ If you are doing it yourself and need any advice, message professional grooms. We are happy to help and guide you. We all started somewhere.

I can certainly relate to the “it kicks” as my own horse is a prime example of a trace clip that turned into a chaser clip! 🙈

A good giggle for you all during this miserable weather….

These are all yard rules at mixed yards that I found on a livery yard forum. It’s hard to believe that these are real and not a joke!
My partner and I run a yard ourselves and we don’t want to have too many rules, but compared to these rules I don’t think we have anything to worry about! 🤣

Enjoy…..

I know a yard that doesn’t allow visiting your horse on Tuesdays 🥴

Not allowed to use a wheelbarrow to muck out! Seriously! We had to muck out into buckets and carry them to the muck heap!

Not allowed to go to stay away shows.

Couldn’t drive a hire horsebox on the yard . Load on the road.

Couldn’t bring you own hay or bedding in, even if they ran out and had nothing to feed the horses till they have the next delivery 3-4 days later .

Couldn’t be on the yard after 8pm

Horses are not allowed to run around in the field 😐 if they did they got brought in.

Not allowed to pull ragwort up, had to spray it in the field with the horses turned out still

Not allowed to use your stables in summer

There was a porta loo on the yard that you werent allowed to poo in 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Off by 3pm bank Holidays, off by 5pm weekends as they want some peace and quiet

No banking in the stables coz it ruins them apparantly

If horse poos on floor outside stables have to scrub with disinfectant after brushed up as brushings not enough!

Time to defluff beautiful regular Dee 🩷

Dee gets really uncomfortable with her fluffy legs and she does suffer slightly from Mallenders and Sallenders, so it’s important we keep the hair from smothering these wounds so her owner Vic can clean them daily and treat them where necessary. 👌🏻

Mallenders and Sallenders are skin conditions caused by the over production of keratin, which produces the hair. This can appear on the back of horses legs, most commonly in horses with heavy feathers. The skin appears thickened, becomes very itchy and scabs form from it. Mallenders form behind the hind legs below the hock, and Sallenders form behind the knees in front. There is no cure but the condition can be easily managed. 😊

Rebel Diamite is good for treating the scabs and also helps to break down any further keratin that is produced. It also treats any mites that may sometimes be present and helps to prevent hard skin from forming which then will crack and scab.

It’s important to clean any wounds daily to avoid infection. Mud guard creams and sprays are also very useful to use on the legs whilst out in winter, as it treats the scabs and protects the skin from further damage.
