My parents dogs came to stay for 2 weeks and it was very busy! Lots of environmental management to keep the older girls happy and feeling safe from puppy chaos. A lot of the training we had been doing had to take a back seat though different training came into play. We have been having a bit of resource guarding, this exercise will help reduce this, it will also help them learn that their names indicate who is doing the task. Poppy is learning to use her nose finding food for scent, it will help with attention, focus, recall and it is a lovely activity to do in general. Socialisation for 12week old puppy with livestock. Her engage disengage has come on leaps and bounds. These are this years lambs, away from mums and they where a lot livelier then the other sheep we have met…. Also a lot more nervous so great opportunity to teach her that we just keep going past, they are not a play thing and nothing to get excited about. When you have a pre-schooler and a #puppy it can be tough. The puppy loves to chase and grab with its mouth and the pre-schooler loves to run and be silly. This can result in tears🫣 We have been working on Poppy the #standardpoodle 🐩 impulse control when it comes to chasing my daughter, this has tied in with recall with distraction. She is getting to the point now where she is disengaging by choice and coming back to me for praise and treats. We have also been working on my daughter having little training sessions with the dogs, they sit and pay her attention nicely for treats for calm interactions, they also play with tug toys together so they get the fun fix. This chase impulse control is not perfect yet, poppy is still so young, I’m so proud of her. #rewardbasedtraining #rewardbasedresults

For me it is important that my dogs are livestock safe, she has seen sheep over walls and through gates. This was the first time she was in a field with them. They where big tups 🐏 so could be very intimidating, Mia used to be very scared of them. I have decided to train stay into the requests for ‘sit’, ‘Down’ and ‘Stand’. I did this very briefly with poppy yesterday. I initially wanted this to be a 1:1 session….. but Mia can hear a biscuit crunch a mile away and managed to wake up and come downstairs 👀😂 I decided to take the situation for what it was and used the opportunity to work on the holding ‘sit’ and ‘down’ until release for Poppy. For Mia it was a great chance to get a load of treats while I focused on her sister…. Mia can tend to the jealous so it was a great opportunity. For both dogs I used a variable schedule of reinforcement, for poppy the schedule started a lot more frequently then gradually spaced out as she ‘got it’ 🥰 this need for treats will be faded over time.

Dogs can have up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses. This is around 40 times more than ours. When I was pregnant with my daughter I could not drink tap water, my heightened smell I could smell & taste all of the chemicals….. especially in London. It made me feel 🤢 and I could not keep it down. A dogs sense of smell is 40x that no wonder Mia hated the tap water in London, she will drink the tap water here, but her favourite drinking spot is this trough, every time we go past she will drop whatever she is doing for a drink. Mamma sheep are very protective of their baby’s, rightfully so! I take great pains to give sheep as much space as possible. Though there was a very fierce mamma, who came at us stamping her feet Mia was frightened, but she hid behind me so I could deal with it. As I have taught her.
The next field she froze as soon as we entered seeing the sheep I took it at her pace, trying to make the experience as positive as possible.

Mia was attacked by a working border collie a year ago, it really knocked her and she became fear reactive with dogs of similar size and colour. It has been difficult to find enough well behaved border collies in my area to work on this for her. It really freaks her out when they lock on and start prowling towards her. This border collie did that and she did a fear vocalisation, she calmed down quickly when reassured 🥰 I used a clicker to mark her looking at the dog and not reacting. This was even better as my toddler Lily was with us which intensifies her anxiety. Mia has been reactive with other dogs when on the lead, since she was attacked me and the other dogs owner managed to stop a serious incident. However Mia is super clever and has a impressive memory , she still won’t even talk to that dogs owner or take food off him.
