On Wednesday 15th January, Mitchells Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, held their weekly sale of primestock with Cattle: sheep including prime hoggs and cast ewes and rams.

22 prime cattle forward with all selling to a flying trade. Limousin heifer sold to £3.96ppkg (£2436.28) from Messrs Lawson & Sons, Hundith House, bought by Haighs butchers, Workington. Other smooth Limousin heifers sold to £3.86ppkg from JJ Crichton, Loughrigg was sold to another local butcher, WilsonWillis, Cleator Moor. A run of well finished heifers from Newbiggin Farms sold to a top of £3.74ppkg. Bullocks sold to £3.28ppkg for a Blonde d’Aquitaine from MW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge. A wonderful Limousin bull from PE & M Capstick, Whicham Hall sold to £3.66ppkg (£2551.19).

Well meated hoggs continue to sell a fast trade 32 lots of hoggs for £200 or more! Topping the sale was a cracking Beltex from A&D Smith, Kelmore Hills selling to £242 purchased by Tony Harrrison Butcher, Cockermouth. Texels also selling to £240 from W&E Gate, Rook Farm again purchased by Tony Harrison, Cockermouth.

Many pens of hoggs selling over the £4ppkg mark, with a top of £4.38ppkg for a Texel from W&E Gate, Rook Farm. Beltex sold to £4.30ppkgfor MJ Lawson, Pasture House. First cross continental hoggs selling £3.40 - £3.60ppkg mark.

Hill bred hoggs sold to £154 for Cheviots from RG&D Cockburn, Stonecroft. Mule sold to £154 for a pen of 46kg from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth. Swaledale selling to £141 from W&PA Walton & Son, Low Kinmont who sold Herdwick to £137.50. A ring full of Cheviot Mules sold £3.58ppkg from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Poppy Farm. Mule sold to £3.30ppkg from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth. With well meated meats £3.15 - £3.25ppkg. All light hoggs full of meat selling to a very strong trade. More needed each week.

All cattle well bid for selling to a flying trade.



Cast bulls sold to £2136 for a Limousin from JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm. Cows sold to £1831 for a Limousin from T Trafford & Son, Peter House Farm, with Hereford selling to £1838 from D&J Errington, Annfield. Dairy cows sold to £1713 from Tallentire Hill Farm.



Topping at 274ppk for Limousin cows from S Southward, Hall Waberthwaite with well fleshed beef cows 220ppk - 250ppk. Dairy cows sold to 232ppk Messrs Hewitson, Yeorton Hall with well meated cows selling 210ppk plus.

This time last year we were all getting to grips with the changes in legislation requiring a Veterinary Attestation Number (VAN) or Farm Assurance status in order to sell livestock for slaughter for export outside of the UK.

VAN numbers expire every 12 months so many producers will soon be requiring a renewal. So, here's your friendly reminder to check your expiration date and to speak to your local veterinary practise when its time to renew. And when you have, make sure you take your new VAN number to market with you.

Opening Show & Sale of Store Cattle

What a way to start the year!! With an amazing, catalogued entry of 1071 Store Cattle.
The pre-sale show was in the capable hands of Mr Roger Egglestone, Stockport.
The judges had a tremendous show of cattle in front of them, after much deliberation the championship was awarded to a Limousin Heifer from Ms I Powley, Green Marsh later selling for £2300.00. Reserve Champion was awarded to a Limousin Steer from S Hardisty & Son, How Hall later selling for £1920.00.
Topping the sale was an outstanding Limousin Heifer from T Trafford & Son, Peter House Farm selling for £3250.00.
All classes of cattle were sold above and beyond vendors expectations reported as one of the best trades ever seen with over 100 cattle selling to excess of £2000. All cattle sold averaged £1540, an increase of £176 on the year. There was one of the largest ring of buyers ever seen in Mitchells Auction, cattle being dispersed the length and breadth of the country.
