I think/ hope my Sprocket Crew know how much love I feel for them and how grateful I am to each and everyone one of them for the love they've given me back.

Four and a half years, over one hundred dogs, thousands of walks and even more memories (and about 120,000 pictures and videos stored on my phone of those memories πŸ˜…).

I count myself as pretty darn lucky with the owners who have been part of my team but to all owners who hire a professional for their pets - please, please treat your dog walkers with the kindness and respect they deserve.

Please don't take them for granted, yes we love our jobs but my god it's hard work and making sure requests are in on time, payments are made, you update your walker on any issues with the dog, give them plenty of notice for when you're away, leave your dogs equipment out ready... all those things make our job that bit easier.

I know my crew are all fantastic and I'm so looking forward to seeing them out with their new walkers - such a huge weight and relief to know they're going to the good ones πŸ₯°
I wouldn't want anything less for you all.

It's been a pleasure, even in the wind and rain your dogs have given me so much to smile about 😊

All our love, Rhiannon, Eric&Yzma ###

A much calmer and quieter walk to wrap up the day and my career πŸ₯° Yzma, Poppy, Hugo and Otis were all fabulous and enjoyed a splash, some zooms, a few splats and lots of treats and fusses.
Bonus that Otis even found some trash! We couldn't haven't ended the walk until he did, he is the best trash Retriever in Wales after all!

Thank you for all being so wonderful πŸ’–

There are so many things I'd like to say but it'll have to wait until I'm a little more composed and less shell shocked that today really was our last πŸ₯²

So, until then - enjoy the absolute genius idea I had to spend out last morning at the sand dunes, in the sun, on Good Friday with nine little pals - our OG pals groups πŸ₯Ή
These nine have been fabulous friends for years and have been core members of the Sprocket Crew and enjoyed almost 2hrs as an extra special bonus thank you.

Thank you Eric, Yzma, Nixie, Mabel, Rudi, Teddy, Lilly, Coco and Seren for being there from day dot (or for the later additional siblings, for joining along the way).
It's not been smooth sailing, a broken elbow, a swim across Ogmore River to go on a solo adventure, a cut knee, almost tripping me up about 4000 times, picnic stealing, many attempts to push and pull me down hills and so on... but for the vast majority - we had thousands of fabulous walks.

Also to their owners who became some of the best friends a girl could ask for - you've kept me sane, supported me, grounded me, and made me smile every single day.

I know it won't be goodbye to ANY of these dogs because I'll see all of you again over this weekend anyway πŸ˜‚ but I will enjoy not being solely responsible for you all πŸ˜‰πŸ§‘

β€˜My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupid’

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know I’m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, I’m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years I’ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs don’t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think β€˜oh he isn’t limping or yelping so he is fine’.

Please read the examples below ⬇️

🐾 A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogs… but…

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didn’t limp. He wasn’t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

🐾 A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

🐾 A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would β€˜tap out’ of training on the regular and my friend went from β€˜this is my ticket dog who will represent my country’ to β€˜is this even possible?’

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

🐾 A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly β€˜checked out’ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as β€˜oh she is just a border collie it’s what they are like’.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

🐾 A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

🐾 My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesn’t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive β€˜naughtiness’ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If you’re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

Use it or lose it!

Rat Dogs Lulu and and Bertie have been showing their age recently. It’s been a bit of reality check for me, as while I joke about terriers surviving a nuclear holocaust, they are in their twilight years.

Temptation is to wrap our old dogs up in bubble wrap but that only serves our own interests. If we stop our elderly dogs from keeping up a level of fitness and mental stimulation then they will loose those things relatively quickly and decline faster for it. We can make some accommodations for them that doesn’t take away their enjoyment but also isn’t running them into the ground.

This can mean:
⭐️ adjusting where you walk
⭐️ adapting training to their physical ability
⭐️ adding some 121 time with them
⭐️ veterinary support and pain management
⭐️ changing my own habits like walking speed

I’ve already started with adjustments for my old codgers. Bertie has dementia so there are lots of things he can no longer recall. He’s very arthritic now as well. But he loves going for a walk so I take him to places with sniffs and flat paths. I do mostly luring type training with him and fun shaping any behaviour he offers. He’s getting all the drugs to live as pain free as possible.

Lulu is still all there in mind and body but she’s also on meds and having physio for pain management and fitness. I’ve started making adjustments to where I walk her so I keep joints lubricated but not pushed past their limit.

I’ll be writing a few follow ups about doggy dementia and more we can do to ease the way for our senior dogs.
